L. Pacavia (L. tenebrosa 'Paul' AM/AOS x L. purpurata 'Claire' AM/AOS)
This grex was registered 123 years ago and has been re-made many times over the years. With this remake we have chosen highly awarded parents. Pacavia has a handsome plant habit, with straight upright growths and leaves. They bloom reliably in June and July and mature plants are showstoppers. Expect impressive flower size, strong stems of 5-7, richly-colored dark purple flowers with bold contrasting lips. And if that was not enough, the protocorms with treated (t) with oryzalin to help induce higher ploidy. Those that convert will be exceptional.

SVO 10977
(Lc. Issy 'Ruben's Pick' x E. cordigera 'Black Diamond')
This is a very interesting cross. I challenge you to think about the potential here. The parents of Lc. Issy are (C. leopoldii x L. tenebrosa) a tall plant with many large 6” bronze flowers. The E. cordigera has dark segments and a deep purple lip the flower spikes are branched and carry 15-18 flowers.  Both parents' flowers are fragrant and bloom in early summer.  Think about the potential…tall stems, 10 plus flowers in deep black/burgundy colors with bright red/purple lips and fragrant.

SVO 11224
(Lc. Amphion 'Cherry Pie' AM/AOS x C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS)
The mesmerizing flower color of Lc. Amphion (C. S. J. Bracey x L. tenebrosa) really is spectacular, the flowers are beautifully colored, large and plant is a strong grower, blooming in the late spring. C. Chocolate Drop (guttata x aurantiaca) needs little introduction. Its waxy red flowers are held high in a cluster of 15-20 which makes it easily identifiable, even from a distance. This cross is all about flower color, and large blooms.  Expect the 5” flowers to be red, most likely a waxy substance but also possible velvety, the lips will be bright red and sturdy stems of 10-12 flowers will be held above the foliage.

Blc. Paisley Laura Grace (C. Summerland Girl 'Orchidglade' x Blc. Chinese Bronze 'Marco Polo')
Some of my favorite cattleyas are the tall-growing bifoliates.  Over the last few years, we have noticed not much breeding along these lines, since they're some of my favorites, I made a few crosses to share with all you bifoliate Catt lovers!  Summerland Girl (C. leopoldii x Lc. Grandee) is a very special plant. One of its parents, Lc. Grandee (Lc. Mrs. Medo x C. Aeneas), is a prominent plant in the history of Cattleya breeding from the 1950's and 60's. This influential hybrid is made up of three species: C. dowiana 75%, L. tenebrosa 12.5%, and C. bicolor 12.5%. Summerland Girl blooms with an astonishing 27 large, waxy, bright red flowers with contrasting purple-red lips.  The plant is 2' tall and the inflorescence adds an extra foot - really spectacular!  Chinese Bronze (C. bicolor x Blc. Chinese Jade) has very flat flowers in green with a bronze overlay and a cool-looking tongue-shaped red lip.  This cross will produce plants that are 18-24” tall with strong upright stems carrying 10 or more large, flat flowers in deep bronze to burgundy colors with bright red lips. This is a very impressive cross that blooms in the heat of summer.

(Schom. schultzii 'Old Sherry' x C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS)
We have not offered a Schomburgkia hybrid in quite a while. These parents look the perfect match for color, flower count and WOW factor.  Ok, so how about this: tall, robust growing plants producing long arching inflorescences with 10 or more waxy red flowers.  Perfect for outdoor growing in frost free areas.

(Lc. Elegans 'Sanguinea' x Bc. Marcella Koss 'Pink Marvel' AM/AOS)
Here the deep purple color form of Lc. Elegans (C. guttata x L. purpurata) was the pod parent and well-shaped pink flower of Bc. Marcella Koss (C. Bob Betts x Bc. Languedoc) was the pollen parent.  The possibilities of this grex are for large… 6-7” flowers in dark pink-purple, very robust plants, blooming in early summer.

(C. Chocolate Drop (C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS x self)
Chocolate Drop (C. guttata x C. aurantiaca) is one of those iconic hybrids - a good grower with great flowers. All the long-time orchid growers remember the cultivar 'Kodama'. Our plant of 'SVO' is a chance tetraploid, and selfing it will produce nearly identical progeny that look just like the mother plant. The flowers will be fragrant waxy reds with red lips in heads of 15 or more. qualities, Chocolate Drop hasn't been too available recently, so we're doing our best to make it popular again!

Lc. Hanna's Dream (Lc. Magic Melody 'SVO ' AM/AOS x Lc. Johanna Rose 'S/A')
White flowers with red lips or semi-alba flowers always get my attention, the white against a red lip is so dramatic!  Magic Melody (C. Tokyo Magic x C. Melody Fair) has great color in addition to the red lip, the petal tips have red flares and this all on a strong inflorescence that holds 5 flowers.  Johanna Rose (Lc. Melody Fair x Lc. Liptonii) is a truly beautiful flower, with exceptional shape, size, color, and presentation. It's amazing to realize that in the ancestry of Johanna Rose you find L. anceps as a parent the Liptonii is (L. anceps x C. labiata).  We believe this cross will give us fantastic semi-alba flowers, expect amazing shape with wide, well-rounded petals, and 4-6 flowers on gracefully arching inflorescences. This is really nice.   Ok… yes, we wanted this so bad we made it twice this year see.

Those of you who have been following our breeding might be aware of the grex named Laughing Boy .  Its heads of 10-15 yellow flowers flared red, is an eye-catching combination. This is the first remake we have made in quite a while. Excellent growers and bloomers.

Oeceoclades saundersiana (Oecl. saundersiana 'Joan' AM/AOS x self)

What a cool species! These are found in central Africa growing in the countries of: Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Zaire and Zambia. In nature they prefer damp places in the shade of riverine forests at elevations around 1200 to 1300 meters. Our plants are doing very well with warm summer temperatures and winter nighttime lows not below 60 degrees. We have our plants in light levels suited for Paphs. and Phals. They are in a fine potting mix as they prefer year-round moisture. The exotic dark colored flowers are heavily overlaid with dark maroon veins, and solid on the edges. The plants produce upright inflorescence of 16 flowers and many more buds.  This is very collectable, and rare (have you ever seen it for sale?)   A great addition to your collection.

SVO 10540
(Dimo. rossii 'SVO' x self)

Did you know that the genus Dimorphorchis has dimorphic flowers with two differently colored and shaped flowers on the same inflorescence? This floral dimorphism is unlike Catasetums which are sexually dimorphic. Dimo. rossii produces a long cascading inflorescence where the first 2-3 flowers on the inflorescence are bright yellow with heavy substance and are highly fragrant, the next 5-8 flowers are light yellow, finely spotted in red! These are easy to grow, and I recommend using a coarse well drained potting mix.  Photo top flowers,   Photo bottom flowers
