Paph. Faire-Maud (Paph. Maudiae 'Los Osos' AM/AOS x Paph. fairrieanum 'Red Dorsal' AM/AOS)
We really like Paph. Faire-Maud: big, brightly colored flowers, long stems, long-lasting blooms, easy-to-grow plants. This is our third iteration of the grex for the year, this time made with an exceptionally dark red fairrieanum, so here we hope for very dark flowers on top of all the other good things typical for this cross. These came back later from the lab than the other Faire-Maud grexes we have offered this year, so the plants are just starting to come into bud; try this cross, or better yet get one from all three grexes and compare!

Paph. Maurice J. Cote 'SVO' x Paph. (Meon x Oriental Enchantment) 'SVO'
What an interesting new direction in producing beautiful green and white Maudiae-type paphs! Paph. (Meon x Oriental Enchantment) ‘SVO’ has a natural spread of over 15 cm, with great color and form. Paph. Maurice J. Cote ‘SVO’ is a cross of Paph. venustum alba and the massive complex Paph. Stone Lovely; it has over three cm wide petals.  This combination should produce huge albas, with yellow-green color, wide petals, and excellent flat form. Very few second-generation crosses have been produced from this type of breeding, and we are excited to offer these; the first ones are in bud now!

Paph. lawrenceanum var. hyeanum 'Albino Beauty' x self
Paphiopedilum lawrenceanum is extinct in its natural habitat, and the hyeanum variety was only ever found in nature twice.  This is the albino form of the flower, with green petals and pouch and a large white dorsal.  The large, attractive flowers are produced on small, nearly miniature plants. These are very rarely available, but incredibly important in the history of Paph. hybridization as one of the parents of Paph. Maudiae (with Paph. callosum album), originally made in 1908.  This cultivar was the best of the previous grex, originally bred by Orchid Inn. Limited availability.      Example photo of flowers

Paph. callosum 'Flat Dorsal' x self
Paphiopedilum callosum is a highly variable species widely distributed in Southeast Asia.  Good forms have lovely red and purple color, and breeders have selected for wide, flat dorsals.  This grex should have good shape and color; ‘Flat Dorsal’ was selected by Sam Tsui at Orchid Inn for excellent dorsal sepal shape on large, colorful flowers. Good forms of Paph. callosum are few and far between, and this cross represents the culmination of four generations of careful selection for form. Limited availability.

Paph. Bengals Lancers (Paph. parishii 'SVO' x Paph. haynaldianum 'SVO')
A beautiful combination of these two parents, this cross has not been made in years. I’m not sure why, since it is such a fantastic cross, easy-to-grow and floriferous, with lovely color. Both parents here have very high flower count: Paph. parishii ‘SVO’ can get 11, and Paph. haynaldianum ‘SVO’ regularly has five flowers. Each flower will have the long, twisted, red petals of parishii and the stance of haynaldianum. Here’s an example of the grex: Paph. Bengals Lancers 'SVO'    Limited availability.

Paph. callosum 'Tall Boy' x Paph. callosum 'Vini Keeper'
Produced from parents from the same grex as Paph. callosum ‘Flat Dorsal’ above, this sib cross of Paph. callosum uses the two parents selected by Dr. Harold Koopowitz as best of the grex.  Dr. Kopowitz’s name has long been synonymous with top-quality vinicolor Paphs, and these should be no exception. Both parents are beautiful, flat, dark-colored vinicolors, with wide dorsals, fine form, and wonderful tall stems.  These should be wonderful callosums, and we are excited to have the first ones in bud now. Limited availability.

Paph. Harold Koopowitz (Paph. rothschildianum 'Bloomington' x Paph. malipoense 'Sam’s Choice' FCC/AOS)
Surely there are few Paphs as impressive as a huge Paph. Harold Koopowitz in full flower, with its massive, flat green blooms, held high on three-foot stems, with each flower more than 7” across.  This grex uses Sam Tsui’s favorite Paph. rothschildianum ‘Bloomington’, which has produced grex after grex of fine hybrids, with his new FCC/AOS malipoense; this grex should be spectacular.  These are blooming-sized plants, recently potted up to 5” pots.  This is one of our favorite crosses, and we are hoping for another top-quality flower like Paph. Harold Koopowitz ‘SVO’ FCC/AOS.
