Diacrium (Caulathron) hybrids

I have been working with Diacrium for many years. The improvement over the species has been remarkable; but the charm of the species has not been lost. Diacrium bicornutum is a heat loving plant and has superior plant vigor. It is very dominant for color and will generally make its progeny white or pink.

I have taken two directions in their breeding; one is to produce bright yellow flowers, the other is to produce pink. Yellow breeding with Diacrium has been a challenge due to the color dominance, but we now have yellow flowers. The pink breeding is working with the color dominance of the Diacrium. In this list we are looking to add extra character to the pink line by introducing some flaring.

These are vigorous growers that enjoy summer heat. The plant size will range from 10” to16” tall and bloom in a 4”- 5” pots.

(Dialc. Silver Maker 'Lullaby Baby' x Lc. Hsinying Excell 'DG' HCC/AOS )

This is taking my Diacrium (Caularthron) breeding in a new direction. Diacrium hybrids are vigorous growers that enjoy summer heat. Silver Maker (Dialc. Silver Toy x C. Dubiosa) produces shapely, pink flowers on strong stems. Hsinying Excell (Lc. Excellescombe x L. briegeri) develops nice stems of well formed, light lavender flowers with darker purple flares and yellow in the lip. I expect Hsinying Excell to be a great breeder like Blc. Love Sound and Lc. Tokyo Magic. Expect pink to lavender flowers of excellent shape, some with purple flares. Compact growing 3” pots.

(Iwan. Olympic Erin 'Good as Gold’ x (Clka. Olympic Gold x Blc. Love Sound) ‘SVO’)

The Olympic naming scheme came about after the 1996 Olympic games when I started breeding seriously with Diacrium (Caularthron). This breeding has been under development for many years, the goal is to produce 5-10, full formed, yellow flowers on strong stems. Olympic Erin (Iwan. Appleblossom x Blc. Erin Kobayashi) is a good golden yellow flower and (Clka. Olympic Gold x Blc. Love Sound) is a bright yellow with a good stem. 3” pots.

(Clka. Olympic Seagulls 'Sunset' x (Clka. Olympic Gold x Blc. Love Sound) ‘SVO’ )

The Olympic naming scheme came about after the 1996 Olympic games when I started breeding seriously with Diacrium (Caularthron). The goal is to produce 5-10, full formed, yellow flowers on strong stems.. Olympic Seagulls (Lc. Koolau Seagulls x Clka. Olympic Gold) a good golden-orange flower on a good inflorescence and (Clka. Olympic Gold x Blc. Love Sound) a bright yellow with a good stem. 3” pots.

SVO 1573

(Clka. Olympic Seagulls 'Solid Yellow' x Iwan. Appleblossom 'Golden Beauty')

Here is more of the Diacrium (Caularthron) breeding. Olympic Seagulls (Lc. Koolau Seagulls x Clka. Olympic Gold) a well shaped, golden-orange flower on a good inflorescence. This Appleblossom ‘Golden Beauty’ (Blc. Orange Nugget x Dial. Snowflake) is an unusually nice light yellow variety. By breeding the Clka. Olympic Seagulls back to its great-grand parent Iwan. Appleblossom will add back its traits for the impressive inflorescence and flowering habit. I am expecting the offspring to flower on long spikes, with 5-7 full formed yellow flowers. 3”pots .

SVO 1579

(Clka. Olympic Gold 'Solid Gold’ x Iwan. Appleblossom 'Golden Beauty' )

Olympic Gold (Pot. Twenty-four Carat x Iwan. Appleblossom) is one of the significant earlier yellow Diacrium hybrids, it produces 4-7, golden-yellow flower on a strong inflorescence. The Appleblossom ‘Golden Beauty’ (Blc. Orange Nugget x Dial. Snowflake) is a nice light yellow variety. The re-introduction of Iwan. Appleblossom traits back onto Clka. Olympic Gold will improve the inflorescence length, flower count and arrangement, while maintaining the yellow flowers. 3”pots.

SVO 1649

(Dialc. Silver Angel 'Pink Lady' x Lc. Mem. Robert Strait sub. var. ‘SVO')

This is taking my Diacrium (Caularthron) breeding in a new direction. Diacrium hybrids are vigorous growers that enjoy summer heat. Silver Angel (Lc. Angel Love x Dialc. Silver Toy) has 5-7 lovely, flat, well presented, baby pink flowers. This Mem. Robert Strait (C. walkeriana x Lc. Wayndora) is a mutation out of ‘Islanders Delight’ AM/AOS and is far superior. It has flat, full, white flowers with dark magenta flares and a fuchsia lip. There will be a significant increase in the Dialc. Silver Angel flower size. I believe the flower color will be pink and we should see some dark flaring, uncommon in this breeding line. Expect to see 4-6 flowers well arranged on a nice upright inflorescence. 3” pots.
