Compact

SVO 9206 NEW
Lc. Rocket Sprite (L. anceps v. sanderiana 'SVO Queen' x L. rupestris 'Orchid Eros' HCC/AOS)

Rocket Sprite is an interesting hybrid that combines the compact plant habit and dark flower color of L. rupestris with the long inflorescences and impressive flowers of L. anceps. Both parents are cold hardy, easily withstanding temperatures into the upper 30's.  Look for arching sprays of purple flowers on compact plants.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Rosebud 'Queen of Splash' HCC/AOS x Slc. Crimson Dragon 'Velvet Splash')

Both Rosebud (Blc Ronald Hausermann x Lc. Mini Purple) and Crimson Dragon (Lisye Sentiasa x Durban Rose) have beautifully shaped flowers in shades of purple with darker flares on the petals. This color combination of purple on purple is not often seen, and we feel this needs to be developed further, as it is a great look in Cattleyas. This might be the perfect combination to further develop this line of breeding. Highly recommended.

Lc. Miss Wonderful (Lc. Mari's Song 'CTM 217' HCC/AOS x L. anceps 'Pink Inspiration' )
Miss Wonderful has been a fantastic hybrid!  These are strong-growing plants and easy to bloom, with large flowers showing excellent flares on 12 to 18” long inflorescences. This is a particularly intriguing remake of this consistently great cross. The use of L. anceps 'Pink Inspiration' is expected to produce flat flowers. This has the potential to produce some truly unique Miss Wonderfuls, and the best of these will be unbelievable.  Don't miss this one!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Gene Crocker 'SVO Red' x Pot. Fantasy Circle 'Flaming Hot')

The outstanding flower shape and color of this Gene Crocker (Pot. Newberry Promise x Pot. Newberry Delight) caught our attention. It's a compact grower just 8” tall with intensely red, full-formed flowers. Fantasy Circle (Pot. Golden Circle x Slc. Angel's Fantasy) has ridiculously well-shaped flowers with fantastic red and yellow flaring on the petals. The flowers are 4” across - huge! The expectation is for large, dark red flowers, many with yellow flaring on the wide petals. Plants will be about 8” tall. We are anxiously waiting to see these bloom!

Lc. Molten Tiger (C. Mareeba Tiger 'Big and Bold' x L. milleri 'Dr. Polk') Mareeba Tiger (C. leopoldii x C. schilleriana)

produces 11-15 spotted flowers with amazing color and rock-hard substance. Crossing it to milleri will lead to red flowers, some with deep burgundy spots. Upright stems will hold 10-13 well-arranged blooms. The plant habit will be compact, and mature plants will be 10-12” tall.  A super cool hybrid! Here is an example of Molten Tiger in bloom. PHOTO

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Tiny Treasure 'Norito' x B. perrinii 'Ruben')

What were we thinking? Is this a crazy cross? Let me explain. Tiny Treasure (C. Porcia x L. lucasiana) is a compact plant with a rupicolous Laelia heritage that produces 5-6 dark pink flowers with yellow lips twice a year. This B. perrinii is unusually floriferous, with 20+ flowers on a single inflorescence. Ok, we are speculating with this cross, but the 10+ flowers will be light pink and the lips yellow with a touch of purple at the tip.

Pot. Mark's Valentine (Pot. Little Toshie 'Gold Country' AM/AOS x Slc. Circle of Life 'Mesmerize' AM/AOS)

This is a good cross with a reliable twice-a-year blooming habit. The flowers have a very attractive shape and come in shades of red with darker red lips. Little Toshie 'Gold Country' (Sc. Beaufort x Blc. Toshie Aoki) is the best cultivar of this delightful grex. It flowers 2-3 times a year with superb, flat, bright yellow flowers and dark red lips. Circle of Life (Lc. Culminant x Soph. coccinea) needs little introduction, and the cultivar 'Mesmerize' is one of the best. Hybrids made in this style of breeding produce excellent progeny, and every plant produces good flowers. Great-looking plants with lots of vigor - these are really nice! Here is a PHOTO of a first bloom.

Lc. NEW HYBRID  (Lc. Little Dipper 'Sato' 4N x Lc. Rosie's Surprise 'Crestwood')

Little Dipper (C. Angelwalker x C. Batalinii) has been a good parent for breeding flared mini-Catts. Its flat flower shape and ease of growth make it a desirable parent. The flowers of Rosie's Surprise (Lc. Irene Finney x C. walkeriana) are rose-pink. Blooms are large and flat, and the lip is broad with purple on the tip and yellow centrally. The expectation for the offspring is 3-5 well-formed flowers per inflorescence. Flowers will be light pink with bi-color flares of yellow and purple on the petals. The lip will be similar in color and shape to the petals.

(C. Elegans 'Leviathan' x Lc. Leoloddiglossa 'SVO Speckled Blue' FCC/AOS)

Lc. Elegans (C. tigrina x L. purpurata) has 8-9, large, impressive flowers over 6” across. Although only a few small spots are visible on 'Leviathan' you know there are recessive spotted flower genes from the tigrina in the background. Leoloddiglossa 'SVO Speckled Blue' has excellent shape and coerulea color, and it carries 20 or more well-presented flowers. The FCC is indicative of its high quality. We know from our years of experience that this type of cross will bring out spots in the progeny. Here we are looking for large flowers at least 5” across in coerulea with darker blue spots and slate blue lips. The robust plants will stand around 16” tall and carry 6-9 blooms per inflorescence. These will be very impressive when mature!

C. NEW HYBRID (C. Green Emerald 'SVO' 4N mutation x C. Caudebec 'Marty's Orchids'4N )

The plant of Green Emerald (C. Elizabeth Mahon x C. Thospol Spot) was given to me as a gift by Mr. Kao of Ching Hua Orchid Nursery in Taiwan. This mutation originated from the cloning of 'Emerald Queen' AM/AOS. The plant is just 10” tall with 5-6 green flowers densely spotted in burgundy with red lips and a substance that I would also describe as “rock hard.” Caudebec (C. Sophia Martin x C. Penny Kuroda) 'Marty's Orchids' is also a meristem mutation and superior to other cultivars, with hard substance, pink flowers, and amethyst-pink spots. What to expect from this pairing: Waxy, hard flowers with heavy substance in light pink with contrasting dark burgundy spots and bright red lips on upright stems of 10-12 blooms.

Mini Catts

If you're looking for a small and colorful addition to your collection, mini-Catts are excellent choices. Plants stay under 6 inches tall and bloom in 3 to 4 inch pots - perfect for small spaces, and growing under lights. Mini-Catts are known for their beautiful flowers, which come in a wide variety of colors and shapes. Our breeding program has resulted in mini-Catts that are heat tolerant, produce large flowers compared to plant stature, and have a strong and attractive growth habit. Most of these plants can bloom twice a year - a great characteristic!

Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Bella del Caribe 'Sparks' x Slc. Angel Eyes 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Bella del Caribe (Slc. Angel's Fantasy x Sc. Beaufort) is a great hybrid. It has spectacular flower color, and the plant is a good grower, blooming twice a year.  Angel Eyes (Slc. Bright Angel x Lc. Little Dipper) has been in our breeding program for years and created many successful crosses. Just recently, I realized how good a parent it is, exhibiting dominance for flaring, flat petals, good flower size, reduced plant stature, and ease of growth. These are going to be really good flared mini-Catts. They will have lots of yellow and red in the flowers, and the plants will bloom twice a year in 3” pots

Slc. Mem. Trudi Marsh (Slc. Tangerine Jewel x Slc. Cosmic Delite) is a recent introduction to mini-Catt breeding and is responsible for most of the candy stripe patterning. It's a vigorous grower and flowers twice a year. The flared flowers of Angel's Fantasy are spectacular, and the FCC/AOS award is a testament to the excellence of this plant. This pairing will produce small plants under 6” that flower twice a year. The flowers will have excellent round shape and be red with yellow veins. An outstanding mini-Catt!

C. Portia (C. labiata f. coerulea 'Peter's 7' x C. bowringiana f. coerulea 'Blue Angel' HCC/AOS)

Portia is a great hybrid, and the coerulea form is especially impressive. It blooms in October with big heads of 15 or more beautiful flowers, and the plants are robust growers. Treating with oryzalin (t) increases the chances that some of the progeny will be converted to tetraploids. Converted plants have improved flower quality and are valuable in breeding.

If you're a collector looking for unique and highly sought-after Cattleya species, look no further. Sunset Valley Orchids has been collecting and breeding some of the finest cultivars available. Over the years, we have amassed over 700 selected species plants, including rare and desirable color forms that are not commonly available to hobbyists. C. aclandiae f. alba (C. aclandiae f. alba 'SVO' AM/AOS x self)

I could not have a species Cattleya collection without C. aclandiae. Recently, some of the rare color forms have become available, so I had to have them, too. Yes – like you, I am afflicted with a passion for orchids! The alba color form of C. aclandiae is very rare in cultivation, and only a few plants were ever found in the wild. As a result, they have been prohibitively expensive, but we're about to change that. This is the only AM/AOS awarded to C. aclandiae f. alba, and the flower size and shape are outstanding, as is the plant, which blooms twice a year. The protocorms were treated with oryzalin with the goal of producing some plants that have converted to tetraploids.
