Sunset Valley Orchids 2020 Cattleya List

Compact Catts

Compact growing Cattleyas have gained considerable interest with hobbyist for some important reasons.

  • Plants will stay under 12” tall and bloom in 4”- 5” pots.
  • They are space savings so with more plants per sq. ft. makes for more flowers per sq. ft.
  • Flowers are appealing, with large size and wide range of colors.
  • New hybrids are bred to carry the flowers well, on strong stems that don't require staking.
  • They grow well under a wide range of cultural conditions.

The crosses listed represent the most modern breeding available, with many outstanding hybrids having great potential.  I have spent hours describing the potential of the offspring, so read on!

Second Release SVO 6345
L. NEW HYBRID (L. angereri 'Peter' x L. cowanii 'SVO')

I have always liked the Brazilian Laelias.  Primary hybrids (crosses between two species) like this grex exhibit a phenomenon called "hybrid vigor," in which the offspring grow better and flower more freely compared to either species.  L. angereri is one of my favorites, and this grex blooms with 20 + well-supported red-orange flowers.  L. cowanii or harpophylla, as it was known before the recent nomenclature change, has bright orange flowers, usually 4-7 per stem, and ‘SVO’ is a selection that has superior flower quality.  Here we are looking for bright orange-red stars on good stems held by compact plants that bloom in spring.  This grex will have all the charm of the species but be easier to grow. Very limited supply.

SVO 6861t
L.  Autoceps (L. autumnalis f. alba x L. anceps 'Disciplinata' HCC/AOS)

Here is an interesting cross between non-standard (rare) color forms of two Mexican Laelia species.  I expect that a few will be white with purple flecks (very desirable), some will be pink with purple flecks (nice), and some will be pink with no flecks (okay).  Flower count will be improved to 5-7 per stem, and these should bloom in November, a month or so before anceps flowers.  These plants have been treated (t) with Oryzalin, a chemical used to convert diploids into tetraploids, and are very limited in supply.

Second Release SVO 6896
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Twilight Song 'SVO' AM/AOS x L. anceps 'SVO Flare')

The ‘SVO’ cultivar of Twilight Song (L. anceps x C. walkeriana) is truly beautiful, with soft pink blooms reminiscent in shape of a huge L. anceps and 5-7 flowers on a long arching stem. Breeding back to L. anceps 'SVO Flare' will reinforce the anceps flower appearance and plant habit, while the walkeriana ancestor will increase flower size and fulness of the petals.  In other words, they will look like super L. anceps.  These will be robust, temperature tolerant plants that will do well in a wide range of environmental conditions.  Very limited availability.

SVO 7008
Eplc. Magic Wand (Lc. Trick or Treat 'SVO' 4n x Epc. Kyoguchi 'Peter's Pick')

This is a great hybrid, and the robust plants grow and bloom well in any conditions.  The yellow to gold flowers have red-striped lips, and the inflorescences are branched with many 1.25” blooms.  Best of all, these are fragrant - yes, fragrant flowers!  This is a great non-traditional hybrid.  Flower color ranges from yellow to orange, with red-striped lips.  Plants are super easy to grow.  Did I mention that they’re also FRAGRANT?!  Yes - they are!  This is a fun cross with a very different look.  Plants are great growers, and many will flower this spring.

Second Release SVO 7049
Lc. NEW HYBRID (L. angereri 'Peter' x C. violacea 'Muse' FCC/AOS)

This cross is expected to produce eye-catching colors. The starry flowers will have a burnt orange color overlaid with fuchsia, and the lip will be royal purple with a bright yellow throat. A totally new direction in breeding, exploring the untapped potential of C. violacea.  Limited supply.

SVO 7059
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #1' x Pot. My Precious 'Valentine Gift')

Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red flowers with darker red lips.  It has proven to be an excellent parent, with dominance for color, strong stems and bloom period.  My Precious (Slc. Precious Katie x Blc. Oconee) has a well-formed, deep red flower with a darker burgundy lip.  Plants are compact and produce 3 well-held flowers per stem. We are working to develop those elusive red flowers with good shape on strong stems, and these parents have the potential to deliver!

SVO 7082
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Dream Smith 'Feb. Red' x Pot. Paradise Rose 'My Valentine')

The beautifully-shaped deep red-purple flowers of Dream Smith (Pot. Dream Circle x Blc. Mem. Ralph Smith) are surprisingly good.  The flowers of Paradise Rose (Slc. Pink Doll x Blc. Toshie Aoki) are a vibrant purple-red, and the plants are small growing.  Big flowers on small plants is the objective here.  Flowers will have good shape and an intense red-purple color.  Expect 3-4 flowers on plants staying under 10” tall.

SVO 7083
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x L. Seagull’s 'Red')

The vibrant orange-yellow flower color of Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) and its cluster of 8-9 flowers make this cross one of my favorite March bloomers. Crossing it to Seagulls (briegeri x milleri) will produce robust-growing, compact plants with straight upright bulbs and good stems of 7-9 flowers in sunset colors held above the foliage.

SVO 7096
Bl. NEW HYBRID (Bl. Sunny Delight 'MAJ' AM/AOS x L. briegeri 'SVO II')

Here is an out of the box hybrid. Sunny Delight (B. perrinii x C. aurantiaca) is a highly floriferous plant with many yellow flowers having the classic shape of a Brassavola. L. briegeri is a very compact-growing plant with upright stems of bright yellow flowers. One of the interesting things about this cross will be the influence of briegeri on the plant habit. We expect a shortening of the plant stature, leading to very compact plants with upright leaves, a “space- saving” plant habit.  Flowers will be yellow, produced on good stems, with the Brassavola flower form influencing shape.

SVO 7140
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Angel Heart 'Hihimanu' AM/AOS x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Amazing' )

This is a speculative cross, and the outcome is harder than usual to predict.  Angel Heart (Lc. Puppy Love x C.  Penny Kuroda) has flowers that are a soft pastel pink with pink flaring.  It has strong stems that do a good job presenting the 5-7 large flowers above the foliage.  Martha Clarke (Blc. Love Sound x Slc. Circle of Life) is a very successful hybrid.  Plants are compact and produce flowers with excellent shape and great color.  I believe these plants will produce flowers with good shape, held well on strong stems.  Flower color is going to be variable, ranging from soft pastel pinks to darker rose tones, but some yellow shades or reds could come from this cross.  There’s even a possibility that unusual flaring will be present in many of the flowers.  It will be fun to see how these turn out.  Limited supply.

SVO 7173
L. Zip (L. tenebrosa 'None Darker' x L. milleri 'Dr. Koopowitz Red' HCC/AOS)

I first saw a picture of L. Zip over 30 years ago.  Frank Fordyce was giving a talk at the San Diego County Orchid Society, and when the slide came up the whole audience (over 150 people) gasped so loudly it sent shivers up my spine!  I’ll never forget that moment.  This Zip has been made with tenebrosa ‘None Darker,’ which has very dark flowers. Expect clusters of sparkling bronze-red flowers with contrasting dark purple lips held high on strong inflorescences.  Highly recommended and very desirable. Here is a picture of the first to bloom click here.

SVO 7180
L. Zip (L. tenebrosa 'Paul' AM/AOS x L. milleri 'Dr. Koopowitz Red' HCC/AOS)

This remake of Laelia Zip has been done with some of the finest parents available. Expect clusters of sparkling bronze-red flowers with contrasting dark purple lips held high on strong inflorescences.  Highly recommended - don’t miss out on these! Here is a picture of the first to bloom click here

SVO 7216
Dialc. NEW HYBRID (Dialc. Ann’s Snowflake 'SVO' x Lc. Hsinying Skies 'Ching Hua')

This is a complex L. anceps cross that combines Dialc. Ann's Snowflake (Dial. Snowflake x Lc. Ann Akagi) and Lc. Hsinying Skies (Lc. Puppy Love x Lc. Sierra Skies).  Although not immediately apparent, L. anceps is represented 3 times in 4 generations.  There is also considerable influence from L. albida and Diacrium bicornutum.  These parental plants will assure strong arching stems of 7-9 well-arranged beautiful flowers in soft pink colors.  We have been working for many years to develop this type of breeding, and I am very optimistic that these will be excellent.

SVO 7259
Lc. Miss Wonderful (Lc. Mari's Song 'CTM 217' HCC/AOS x L. anceps f. petaloid 'Jody')

Miss Wonderful is a fantastic hybrid!  We've made it on 4-5 separate occasions with different parents, and every time the results have been outstanding.  These are strong-growing plants and easy to bloom, with large flowers having excellent flares on 12 to 18” long inflorescences. This is a particularly intriguing cross. The use of L. anceps forma petaloid is expected to increase petal width and modify lip shape in ways not seen before. This has the potential to produce truly unique Miss Wonderful offspring, and the best of these will be unbelievable. I have tried to make this exact cross twice before with no luck.  Don't miss this one!

SVO 7260
Pot. Dean's Gold (Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Pot. Little Toshie 'Gold Country' AM/AOS)

Both of these plants have been important parents in our hybridizing programs. Each has important traits: bright yellow color, excellent flat form, large flower size relative to plant size, and the ability to bloom 3 times a year. The combination of Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) and Pot. Little Toshie (Sc. Beaufort x Blc. Toshie Aoki) doubles up on the influence of Beaufort, assuring excellent shape and small plant stature. Xanthette and Toshie Aoki are good yellows with large flowers and will contribute strong color and size to this cross.  These are going to be excellent yellows with red lips, flat form, large blooms relative to plant size, and frequent flowering.   One of the first to bloom Picture

SVO 7262
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Robert and Michael 'SVO' x Slc. Lisye Sentiasa 'SVO')

Dark purple flowers on small plants are very popular. Blc. Robert and Michael (Lc. Aloha Case x Blc. Hunting Island) are compact plants standing 10” tall that produce large, well-formed, flat, dark purple flowers.  Truly spectacular!  Lisye Sentiasa (Lc. Mini Purple x Slc. Angel Jack) has flat flowers in shades of deep vibrant purple – very eye catching – and the small plants flower twice a year.  Intense dark purple flowers are a given.  Plants will mature at 6-8” tall and look like a big mini-Catt.  The flat, shapely flowers will be large in comparison to the plant size.  Great potential here.

SVO 7263
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Pat Thrall 'Magenta Fire' AM/AOS x Lc. José Dias Castro 'Magnifica')

Pat Thrall (Blc. Bonanza Queen x Slc. Circle of Life) has an amazing flower.  The 5.5” blooms with beautiful magenta color are quite memorable. José Dias Castro (C. labiata x Lc. Sam W. Soysa) is a famous breeder, and ‘Magnifica’ is compact growing with the classic Cattleya shape and lip.  It is known to impart rich color and excellent form to its progeny.  This cross is a blending of the old time classic Cattleya look with the modern.  The great thing about this new breeding style is the compact plant habit.  Plants will mature at 8-10” tall, bloom with large flowers relative to plant size, and have much of the same charm as the classic Cattleyas of years past.

Second Release SVO 7266
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Tiny Treasure 'Star Amethyst' HCC/AOS x Sc. Lana Coryell 'Forever More' AM/AOS)

One of my favorite flower color combinations is pink petals and sepals with yellow lips.  Easy to say, harder to do.  Tiny Treasure (C. Porcia x L. longipes) has a dark pink/lavender flower with a bright yellow lip from the longipes parent.  Flowers are well-presented in groups of 4-6 on plants only 6-7” tall.  Lana Coryell (C. walkeriana x Sc. Beaufort) has a light yellow flower with a soft pink overlay, making an apricot color.  The lip is mostly yellow with a touch of rose on the tip.  These parents hold considerable promise to deliver pink flowers with yellow lips. Small-growing plants will produce 3-4 flowers on strong stems in the spring and possibly again in the fall.  Limited availability.

Second Release SVO 7270
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Burana Angel 'SVO #1 Best' HCC/AOS x Pot. Roy's Magic 'Ruben')

Here we are doubling up on the yellow flowers with red flares of Burana Beauty. Burana Angel (Pot. Burana Beauty x Slc. Bright Angel) and Roy's Magic (Pot. Burana Beauty x Lc. Tokyo Magic) both display excellent color with yellow flowers having deep red flares, well-presented in clusters of 5-7 blossoms on strong stems.  Plants are excellent growers and reliable bloomers and the offspring should be as well.

SVO 7318
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Pink Treasure 'SVO mini-Loddigesii' x L. Finckeniana 'Kennedys' Mutation)

Breeding for pink flowers with yellow lips.  Pink Treasure (Lc. Tiny Treasure x C. loddigesii) has a spectacular pink flower with a yellow lip, great shape and good flower count.  The ‘Kennedys’ cultivar variety of Finckeniana has a bit of controversy surrounding its parentage. It may, in fact, be Lc. Bowri-albida (albida x bowringiana).  This plant produces 7-9 very nice pink flowers with yellow lips that are arranged well on strong stems.  Great flower count with this cross as well.  We are expecting 7-9 nicely-shaped flowers presented well above the foliage. Flower color is the desirable hot pink with beautifully yellow lips.

SVO 7319
Dialc. NEW HYBRID (Dialc. Silver Star 'SVO' x C. Dubiosa 'Scully’s' HCC/AOS)

Silver Star (Diac. Colmaniae x L. anceps) looks like a super improved anceps.  The vigorous plants mature two growths a season and flower from each with long arching stems of 5-7 white flowers having all the charm of an anceps.  Dubiosa ‘Scully’s’ is one parent of the famous grex Lc. Puppy Love (Dubiosa x anceps).  With this cross we expect Dubiosa to dominate once again and produce flowers that have a shape and color similar to Puppy Love, with an improved flower count. These plants have an excellent robust growth habit.

Second Release SVO 7329
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Loud Nine 'SVO Best’ x Pot. Pat Thrall 'Magenta Fire' AM/AOS)

Here is a new twist in breeding. We have written about Loud Nine (Pot. Rubescence x Sl. Orpetii) as a spectacular-flowered mini-Catt with vibrant true red flowers and darker burgundy lips. Pat Thrall (Blc. Bonanza Queen x Slc. Circle of Life) is an amazing grex that produces beautifully-formed, large 5.5” blooms with a striking magenta color on plants that are 10-12“ tall.  The expectation here is plants 6-8” tall with flowers that allow the size and shape of ‘Magenta Fire’ to prevail.  Flower color be in the red shades, and lips will have the fullness of standard Cattleyas.  Plants should bloom 2 times a year.  All in all a very promising hybrid.

Second Release SVO 7332
Pot. Nick Taylor
(Pot. Paradise Rose 'My Valentine' x Pot. Oconee Circle 'SVO')
If you want the darkest, most vibrant crimson-red flowers imaginable, this grex will do it!  Paradise Rose (Slc. Pink Doll x Blc. Toshie Aoki) has great color and shows an interesting phenomenon of color dominance.  The flowers of Pink Doll are dark purple, while the color of Blc. Toshie Aoki is dominated by the influence of C. dowiana, with the yellow and red being recessive for color but known to intensify purple.  Paradise Rose combines these traits and produces intense crimson-red-purple flowers.  Oconee Circle (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Oconee) has an amazing flower, far superior to its parents, with surprisingly nice color, size and shape.  This first bloom photo shows its quality.  Flower color will be very vibrant deep purple-red, and flower form should be “off the charts.”   Limited availability.

SVO 7339
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Pat Thrall 'Magenta Fire' AM/AOS x Pot. Paradise Rose 'My Valentine')

Pat Thrall (Blc. Bonanza Queen x Slc. Circle of Life) is an amazing flower: 5.5” across with beautiful magenta color - quite memorable. The expectation here is to produce a plant about 10” tall with the large flower size and shape of ‘Magenta Fire.’ Flower color will be intense red-purples, and lips will have the fullness of standard Cattleyas. A very promising hybrid that should bloom twice a year. Check out this first bloom picture

SVO 7340
Eplc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Florence Lin 'Diamond Orchids' AM/AOS x Epc. Kyoguchi 'Peter's Pick')

This is a great novelty hybrid.  Kyoguchi (Enc. aromatica x Gur. aurantiaca) has branched inflorescences bearing many yellow flowers that are highly fragrant.  Florence Lin (C. tigrina x L. milleri) has dark red flowers and a crimson-red lip; it can hold up to 19 flowers on a single stem!  These will have many red to orange flowers, and although it's hard to predict fragrance, I expect there to be a notable amount. These will be easy to grow and bloom, and should make nice specimen plants.

Second Release SVO 7346
C. Claesiana (C. intermedia v. aquinii 'SVO Starburst' AM/AOS x C. loddigesii 'Tamiami Thunder' AM/AOS)

Wow, wow, wow!  This is an excellent classic hybrid made in the aquinii form, and the parents are of the highest flower quality.  These plants will bloom in March, which is perfect for the spring show season. Flower quality is expected to be outstanding, and the soft pink blooms will have white flared petals tipped in purple!!   A must-have for the serious collector.

SVO 7349
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Picotee Passion 'Amazing' x Lc. Pink Spice 'SVO')

What a beautiful flower Picotee Passion (Blc. Horizon Flight x L. anceps) has!  The soft color, light yellow splash and lavender picotee are so nice.  Please check out the Picture.  The 5-7 flowers are produced above the foliage on sturdy stems.  Lc. Pink Spice (Lc. Mari's Song x C. walkeriana) has a dark rose-flared flower on a white background, making it quite attractive. The plant is 10” tall and is an exceptionally vigorous grower. Here we are expecting soft cream to white flowers with rose-lavender flares framed with yellow, a very attractive combination. Plants will be strong growers, and the flowers will be presented nicely in clusters of 3-5 above the foliage.

SVO 7352
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Mari's Song 'CTM 217' HCC/AOS x Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS)

Mari's Song (Lc. Irene Finney x C. Cherry Chip) has a long history as an excellent breeder, reliably imparting flared flowers and good growth and bloom habits to its offspring.  Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has an impressive linage and is also a reliable breeder.  Flowers are bright yellow with just a touch of red on the lip and have excellent shape.  Add to this twice-a-year flowering and you have a very desirable parent.  Crossing these two will be a good match.  The large flowers will be soft pink, and petals will have a yellow splash with a bit of red.  Plants are vigorous, and flowers will be well presented twice a year.

SVO 7354
Blc. Topaz Impact (Lc. Mildred Rives 'Orchidglade' FCC/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

Mildred Rives is a large-growing standard Cattleya plant with a semi-alba flower, white with a contrasting red-purple lip.  The well-deserved FCC/AOS speaks to the flower quality.  Love Sound is a plant with a successful breeding history, imparting strong stems, compact growth habit and good flower shape. These will be compact plants, meaning there will be tight spacing between pseudobulbs, and mature growths will be 12” tall.  Flowers will be pure white with contrasting dark red-purple lips, a very showy combination of colors and a manageable plant habit.

SVO 7360
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Granata Sunrise 'SVO Tequila Sunrise' x Blc. Tropical Splash 'Yellow & Red Flare')

Granata Sunrise (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Slc. Wasp Nest) has been an excellent plant.  The flower color looks like a Tequila Sunrise, in shades of yellows, oranges and reds.  The 7-9 blooms are held just above the foliage on sturdy stems, and the plants are attractive compact growers.  Tropical Splash (Blc. Tropical Sunset x Lc. Denis Olivas) has a bright yellow flower with bold red flares on strong stems that hold 5-7 well-arranged flowers above the foliage.  Lots of tropical colors in these flowers!  Yellow, orange and red will predominate, many flared in red, on strong upright inflorescences holding 5-7 blooms above the foliage and a compact plant habit.

SVO 7362
Grn. NEW HYBRID (Epc. Kyoguchi 'Peter's Pick' x Ctna. Why Not 'Super Nova' AM/AOS)

Now this is a real novelty hybrid!  Kyoguchi (Enc. aromatica x Gur. aurantiaca) has branched inflorescences with yellow flowers that are highly fragrant, and Why Not (Gur. aurantiaca x Bro. sanguinea) has deep red flowers of excellent shape.  This makes a hybrid genus named Guaritoniclia - say that three times quickly!  ;-)  Vigorous plants from this cross, and they should start to flower in 3” pots and mature in 4” pots.  I expect Why Not to dominate for flower color and shape, and I think that some will exhibit fragrance and branching habits from the Kyoguchi parent.  I am eagerly waiting for these to bloom.

Second Release SVO 7370
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Newberry Fireworks 'Mendenhall' HCC/AOS)

The vibrant orange-yellow flower color of Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) and its cluster of 8-9 flowers held high on a strong stem make this one of my favorite breeding plants. Newberry Fireworks (Lc. Island Springs x L. anceps) flowers have nice yellow/orange sepals and red petals with yellow flares. The L. anceps influence contributes a long arching inflorescence.  These will bloom with clusters of 5-7 colorful flowers ranging from yellow to orange, many with red flares, on an arching inflorescence 10-16” long.

SVO 7371
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Kagaribi Dawn 'Red Star' x L. Gold Star 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

Kagaribi Dawn (Lc. Kagaribi x Slc. Tropic Dawn) has a star-shaped red flower.  Its unusual flower shape, color and upright narrow pseudobulbs make it a cool-looking novelty plant. Gold Star (L. flava x L. harpophylla) is a hybrid of two Brazilian rupicolous Laelias, carrying starry yellow flowers on a plant with pencil-thin pseudobulbs.  This cross will produce plants with thin, straight, upright pseudobulbs.  Flowers will be starry and red, though some will show a bit of yellow coloration.  Very cool-looking plant habit and unusual starry flowers.

SVO 7373
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Pot. Burana Love 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) is one of my favorite breeding plants due to its cluster of 8-9 vibrant orange-yellow flowers on strong stems. Burana Love (Pot. Burana Beauty x Blc. Love Sound) has a full-shaped, bright yellow flower with bold red flares on a strong upright stem.  These will be compact plants with good upright stems bearing cluster of yellow and red flowers.  Very showy and easy to bloom.

SVO 7374
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Tropical Sunset 'Ocean's Heaven' x Pot. Toshie's Charm 'SVO Hot Lips')

Tropical Sunset (C. Horace x Tropic Glow) has large orange flowers with full, dark red lips, well-presented on a strong inflorescence. Toshie's Charm (Pot. Little Toshie x Blc. Izumi Charm) has yellow flowers with a marvelous shape and beautiful red lip with a touch of yellow.  Both parents are excellent, and the offspring will produce flowers with good shape in shades of yellow and orange, all with red lips.  The reciprocal is SVO 7393.

SVO 7375
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS x L. Gold Star 'SVO' 4n)

Love Sound (Blc. Bouton D’Or x L. briegeri) carries 5-7 well-shaped clear yellow flowers on strong spikes, and is a proven breeder for shape and color. This Gold Star (L. flava x L. harpophylla) is a chance tetraploid from a cross of two Brazilian rupicolous Laelias.  Its starry yellow flowers have fuller shape and heavier substance than usual, and the plant has stockier pencil-thin pseudobulbs. Nice compact plants with upright growths will result from this cross.  The flowers will be full-shaped stars in bright yellow, held well on sturdy stems.  Limited supply.

SVO 7377
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Kagaribi Dawn 'Red Star' x L. Gold Star 'SVO’ 4n)

The same cross as SVO 7371; however, Gold Star ‘SVO’ 4n is a tetraploid.  We are expecting this variant of the cross to favor the color of this Gold Star a bit more.

Second Release SVO 7378
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Koolau Seagulls ‘Volcano Queen' AM/AOS xSlc.Hsiang-Yu Red Pearl 'Red Dragonfly’ AM/AOS)

The award description for Koolau Seagulls sounds amazing: “Twelve flowers and two buds on one inflorescence; flowers red, petals and dorsal sepal with fine concentric maroon spotting on basal portion; lip yellow, stippled with maroon throughout.” And for Hsiang-Yu Red Pearl “Eighteen flowers on three inflorescences; flowers bold orange, overlaid rich red; undulating tubular lip yellow, overlaid intense rich crimson.”  For both plants, flower spikes are straight upright, and the flowers are nicely displayed. These are going to carry deep red flowers with red lips having a touch of yellow in the throat on great upright stems with many well-arranged blooms. Limited supply.

SVO 7383
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Lc. Gold Star 'SVO' 4n)

Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) is one of my favorite breeding plants due to its vibrant orange-yellow flowers in clusters of 8-9 on strong stems. These will be compact plants with straight upright bulbs and inflorescences holding 7-9 bright yellow starry flowers high above the foliage.

SVO 7385
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Picotee Passion 'SVO' AM/AOS x Lc. Mini Song 'La Primera Morada' HCC/AOS)

Picotee Passion (Blc. Horizon Flight x L. anceps) is beautiful!  Flowers are light lavender, and the petals have a darker lavender picotee and flaring.  The lip is light lavender, too, with a darker lavender picotee and a bright yellow throat, and the L. anceps in its background gives it a good strong stem that holds the flower well above the foliage. Mini Song (Lc. Mini Purple x Lc. Mari's Song) has purple flowers with impressive darker purple flares and excellent shape. It’s also a robust grower and bloomer.  I’m a big fan of Picotee Passion, and I especially love the flower color, size and stem habit.  Adding the fine shape and color of ‘La Pimera Morada’ will assure flared flowers in lavender with darker splashes.  Strong stems will do a good job of supporting 3-5 flowers above the foliage.  These will deliver great purple color in March.

SVO 7386
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Slc. Granata Sunrise 'SVO Tequila Sunrise')

Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) has vibrant orange-yellow flower in clusters of 8-9 on strong stems.  It’s a favorite breeder of mine.  Granata Sunrise (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Slc. Wasp Nest) has been an excellent plant as well.  The flower color looks like a Tequila Sunrise, in shades of yellows, oranges and reds, and the 7-9 blooms are held just above he foliage on sturdy stems.  These are going to produce sunset-colored flowers with lots of orange and yellow.  Strong stems will hold the flowers above the foliage in an attractive display.

Second Release SVO 7388
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Lee's Ruby 'Valentine Gift' x Pot. Tutankamen 'Pop’ AM/AOS)

The appeal of big clusters of waxy red flowers is undeniable.  Lee's Ruby (Pot. Martha Clarke x C. Chocolate Drop) produces strong spikes of 9-11 glossy red flowers with much fuller shape than Chocolate Drop.  Tutankamen (C. Chocolate Drop x Slc. Mae Hawkins) has the deepest burgundy-red flower color with good stems of 7-9 rather large flowers.  These will have impressive heads of super, glossy, dark burgundy-red flowers held above the foliage

Second Release SVO 7389
Blc. NEW HYBRID[(Blc. Izumi Charm x C. Candy Tuff) 'SVO' x Blc. Schroder's Love 'SVO' AM/AOS]

Long-lived flowers are always welcome, and flower longevity is partly why this pairing was made.  The other reason is the development of pastel flower colors with full shape on strong stems. Schroder’s Love is particularly nice with its soft pink flowers and full-shaped lip with an eye-catching orange throat on a strong stem of 4-5 blooms.  The (Blc. Izumi Charm x C. Candy Tuff) parent has very long-lived flowers lasting 6-8 weeks in great condition.  Flower color is a soft light pink with a touch of red on the lip, and the strong stems hold 4-5 flowers apiece.

Second Release SVO 7391
Blc. Kaboom (Blc. Schroder's Love 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Schroder's Love (C. schroderae x Love Sound) lends its great flower form, size and strong stem to this grex.  Guess What (Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) adds its high flower count of 9-11 bright orange blooms on a strong inflorescence.  The great color and presentation of the flowers, like an explosion, inspired the grex name "Kaboom!"  A better name might have been “Ka-bloom.”  These are really nice and not to be overlooked! Check out this picture

(Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) is one of my favorite breeders for its vibrant orange-yellow flowers in clusters of 8-9 on strong stems. The proven breeding qualities of Love Sound - full, rounded flowers, bright yellow color, a sturdy stem carrying 4-6 blooms, and an attractive compact plant habit - make this cross a well-thought-out pairing.  Strong sturdy stems will hold 5-9 bright yellow flowers well above the foliage, and plants will be compact and robust.

SVO 7395
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Granata Sunrise 'SVO Tequila Sunset’ x Blc. Kaboom 'SVO')

Granata Sunrise (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Slc. Wasp Nest) is an excellent plant.  The flower color looks like a Tequila Sunrise in shades of yellows, oranges and reds, and the 7-9 blooms are held just above the foliage on sturdy stems.  Kaboom (Blc. Guess What x Blc. Schroder's Love) has a compact growing habit and strong upright flower spikes with 6-7 large, well-arranged bright yellow flowers.  These are going to produce sunset-colored flowers with lots of orange and yellow.  Sturdy stems will hold the flowers above the foliage is an attractive display. Only a few available.

SVO 7397
Pot. Forbidden Love (Pot. William Farrell 'Native Son' x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

What beautiful plants this cross will make!  Robust bulbs hold upright leaves - very handsome. The distinguished heritage in the breeding of William Farrell (Slc. Helen Veliz x Bc. Llano) is impressive, and its ancestry is a veritable who's who of Cattleya breeding in the 1950's and 60's.  'Native Son' has an impressive flower in a beautiful soft peach color, and the strong stems hold 5-6 well-arranged flowers above the foliage.  Love Sound is a modern breeding line.  Compact plants produce upright spikes presenting 7-8 solid yellow flowers with very pleasing shape. This new grex will produce strong stems of well-shaped and well-arranged flowers.  Best of all is the rarely seen peach color that the flowers should display.

SVO 7398
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Kaboom 'SVO' x Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS)

Kaboom (Blc. Guess What x Blc. Schroder's Love) is a great plant with a compact growing habit and strong upright flower spikes with 6-7 large, well-arranged bright yellow flowers. Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the lip.  Excellent shape and twice-a-year flowering make this a desirable parent.  The expectation is for several significant improvements: solid yellow flowers, strong stems holding 5-7 well-arranged blooms above the foliage on compact plants that mature at 8-10” tall.

SVO 7399
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Rockette 'Little Rock' AM/AOS x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

Mini Purple) has a rose-purple flower with impressive magenta flares on the petals.  Flowers are large and have excellent shape with very flat form.  Tydea (C. trianae x L. pumila) is a surprisingly nice primary hybrid with dark purple flowers.  The cultivar , ‘SVO 5x7’ has a 5” flower on a 7” tall plant – very impressive! This cross will capitalize on the flower size, shape, and purple color of each parent.  Plant size will be compact at 10-12” tall.  This is a very promising cross and highly recommended.

SVO 7405
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Granata Sunrise 'SVO Tequila Sunrise' x Slc. Rockette 'Little Rock' AM/AOS)

Love Sound) has a compact growth habit and strong upright stems bearing starry yellow flowers with red flared petals.  Here we are looking to develop strong stems with clusters of 5-7 flared flowers on compact plants. SVO 7415
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Magic Melody 'SVO' AM/AOS x L. anceps 'White Marble')

Every year there are a few crosses I really look forward to flowering, and this is one of them.  Magic Melody (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Lc. Melody Fair) has a very impressive plant and flower.  The blooms are pure white with a crimson lip, and the lateral sepals have a touch of yellow.  The stem is very strong, easily supporting 5-7 large well-arranged flowers.  This anceps produces long stems carrying 4 pure white flowers, each with a purple-veined throat.  I am very optimistic about this cross!  Expect white flowers with wide petals and red lips on strong arching stems displaying 5-6 blooms.  These will be easy-to-grow plants with flowers like a huge semi-alba anceps.

SVO 7432
C. Dubiosa (C. trianae 'Cashens' FCC/AOS x C. loddigesii 'Tamiami Thunder' AM/AOS)

I cannot think of a better pairing to remake the famous classic Cattleya Dubiosa.  ‘Cashens’ is widely considered to be one of the finest trianae cultivars and ‘Tamiami Thunder’ is a spectacular loddigesii with the largest flower awarded and a remarkable 5 flowers on one inflorescence.  Expect this remake to produce flowers with fantastic shape, color and longevity.  Not much more needs to be said.

SVO 7443
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Tropical Aurora 'SVO' x Pot. Burana Angel '#1 Best' HCC/AOS)

Tropical Aurora (Lc. Aussie Sunset x Lc. Tokyo Magic) is a special plant with considerable breeding potential.  Flowers are a pure, very bright yellow - the most intense yellow imaginable – with a contrasting red lip.  It‘s interesting that the red flaring of Aussie Sunset is not expressed in the flowers - it must be a recessive trait. Burana Angel (Pot. Burana Beauty x Slc. Bright Angel) produces remarkably-colored flowers: well-shaped reds with darker red flares and yellow at the base.  Very interesting looking.  Plants are 10” tall and bloom twice a year.  These are a little hard to predict, as we aren’t sure how the recessive splash petals of Tropical Aurora will be transmitted. I’m optimistic that these will produce 5-7 excellent red flowers with yellow flared petals displayed nicely on strong stems.

SVO 7446
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Fordyce Fantasy 'SVO Best' x Pot. Burana Love 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Fordyce Fantasy (Blc. Horizon Flight x C. aurantiaca) is a remarkable hybrid first made by the late Frank Fordyce. The robust-growing plants produce strong stems holding 5-7 flowers in a clear lemon yellow with petals having a purple triangular splash and purple picotee.  Burana Love (Pot. Burana Beauty x Blc. Love Sound) flowers with 5-6 nicely displayed blooms on a tall inflorescence.  Flowers are bright yellow and petals are flared magenta-red, making a very showy display.  These will be yellows with red flares, and the stems will do a good job of supporting the 5-7 shapely flowers just above the foliage, all from compact plants at 12” tall.

Second Release SVO 7451
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Picotee Flight 'SVO' x Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO'AM/AOS)

This cross combines two doses of Love Sound, which imparts strong stems, compact growth habit, good flower production and shape. Picotee Flight (Blc. Horizon Flight x Blc. Love Sound) has a shapely yellow flower with excellent red flares, and Izumi Charm (Blc. Love Sound x Blc. Melody Fair) has well-formed light yellow flower with a crimson lip. Expect compact plants with good upright stems carrying 5-7 flowers in yellow, many flared red, and all with red lips.

SVO 7454
Pot. NEW HYBRID [Lc. Tropical Aurora 'SVO' x (Pot. Yellow Ball x Pot. Burana Beauty) 'Spectacular Bid']

Tropical Aurora (Lc. Aussie Sunset x Lc. Tokyo Magic) is a special plant with considerable potential.  Flowers are a pure, very bright yellow - the most intense yellow imaginable – with a contrasting red lip. It is interesting that the red flaring of Aussie Sunset is not expressed in the flowers, suggesting it’s a recessive trait. ‘Spectacular Bid’ has a bright yellow flower with a touch of red in the lip.  Flowers have exceptional shape, are well-presented and, remarkably, quite fragrant, which is unusual for a yellow Cattleya.  These will produce strong stems of 4-7 well-formed flowers in bright yellow with red lips, and some will be fragrant!  The reciprocal is available as SVO 7511.

SVO 7455
Pot. Rosella's Lovely Sunset (Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS x Pot. Aussie Sunset 'Cosmic Fire' AM/AOS

)Love Sound is a plant with a long history of breeding success.  It imparts strong stems, compact growth habit and good flower shape.  Aussie Sunset (Lc. Fires of Spring x C. Gene May) has a red-orange flower with a yellow splash, and the blooms are held above the foliage in clusters of 4-6.  There is great potential here for yellow-orange flowers with yellow and red flares.  The plants are good growers and will produce 7-9 flowers on strong upright stems.  This cross was first made in Australia, and the plants in photos posted to Facebook a few years ago were exceptional.

SVO 7456
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Magic Melody 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

Magic Melody (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Lc. Melody Fair) is a modern hybrid with a compact growth habit.  It has excellent stems that hold 5-7 large, well-formed, soft yellow flowers with full-shaped crimsons lips, well-arranged above the foliage. Love Sound, with its solid yellow flowers, strong stems, high flower count and compact growth habit, has a long successful breeding history.  The objective with the re-introduction of Love Sound is to reduce plant size to a maximum of 12” tall while keeping strong stems and good flower count.  Flower color will be a bright yellow with lips in crimson.  We are expecting full-shaped flowers from the influence of Magic Melody.

SVO 7457
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Hawaiian Prominence ‘America' AM/AOS x Pot. Velvet Rubies 'SVO')

Hawaiian Prominence (Blc. Hisako Akatsuka x Slc. Wendy's Redstone) produces flowers with an eye-catching color best described as “a deep velvety ruby purple with a ruby purple lip and bright yellow throat.”  Flowers are large at 4.5” across on plants barely 10” tall.  Velvet Rubies (Pot. Rubescence x Slc. Tangerine Jewel) has flowers with an intense red velvety color, excellent shape and is a true mini-Catt, with bulbs just 6” tall.  This cross is focusing on the development of intense, deep velvety ruby-red flower colors.  Lips will be full-shaped with ruffled margins.  Plants will mature at 8” tall, and flowers will 4” across, large in relation to the plants, which will bloom in 3” pots. Check out this first bloom picture

SVO 7459
Pot. Spring Prominence (Pot. Hawaiian Prominence ‘America' AM/AOS x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3')

One of our long-term breeding goals is the development of plants with strong inflorescences holding heads of well-shaped red flowers.  This cross incorporates parents with key traits toward this goal. Hawaiian Prominence (Blc. Hisako Akatsuka x Slc. Wendy's Redstone) has an eye-catching color with flowers best described as “a deep velvety ruby purple with a ruby purple lip and bright yellow throat.”  Flowers are large at 4.5” across on plants barely 10” tall. Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red/orange flowers with darker red lips.  It has proven to be an excellent parent, with dominance for color, a sturdy inflorescence, and bloom period.  These will be vibrant velvety red-purple flowers held well on good stems.  A nice new development in color and flower count.

SVO 7460
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Picotee Flight 'SVO' x Blc. Love Blush 'Love Blush')

This cross has outstanding potential for a new twist on flared flowers. Picotee Flight (Blc. Horizon Flight x Blc. Love Sound) blooms with 7-9 shapely flowers in yellow with excellent red flares and a red picotee.  Quite eye-catching!  Love Blush (Blc. Love Sound x Blc. Picotee Passion) has a delicately beautiful light yellow flower with a light red-rose blush around the margins of the segments.  The 7-9 flowers are well-arranged and supported nicely.  Looking for some magic here.  We expect strong stems of 7-9 nicely-arranged flowers with good flares.  We are optimistic that many will have flared pastel color combinations. I have a good feeling about this one…

SVO 7461
Pot. NEW HYBRID [(Blc. Picotee Flight 'SVO' x (Pot. Burana Love x L. anceps) 'Flared Yellow Gold']

Picotee Flight (Blc. Horizon Flight x Blc. Love Sound) blooms with 7-9 shapely flowers in yellow with excellent red flares and a red picotee. As the cultivar name suggests, the not-yet-registered (Pot. Burana Love x L. anceps) has 4-6 well-arranged flowers that are ‘Flared Yellow Gold’ on a graceful arching stem imparted by the anceps parent.  This cross is going to produce strong stems from the anceps and Love Sound in its background.  Plants should bear 5-7 well-arranged flowers, and we expect light yellow blooms with dark yellow flares and a red splash.  Very colorful flares!

SVO 7462
Pot. Norma Sue (Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS4061 x Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS)

Love Sound has played an important role in our hybridizing program.  Its offspring consistently show desirable qualities, like slightly upswept petal stance, good color, increased flower count, and a nice plant habit.Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the lip.  Excellent shape and twice-a-year flowering make this a desirable parent.  Bright yellow flowers in spring are a sure thing with this cross, and good flower form and stem habit will prevail.

SVO 7463
Lc. Mem. Clara Molnar (Lc. Tropical Aurora 'SVO' x Lc. Aussie Sunset 'Cosmic Fire' AM/AOS)

Crossing Tropical Aurora back to its parent Aussie Sunset (Lc. Fires of Spring x C. Gene May), which has a highly-colored red-orange flower and yellow splash, should override the recessive nature of Tropical Aurora.  If this hypothesis proves to be true, look for very bright yellow flowers flared with red splashes.  Blooms will be held well above the foliage in clusters of 6-7.  I am looking forward to seeing how these turn out.

SVO 7464
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Purple Splendor 'SVO' x Lc. Tydea 'SVO 5x7')

Super dark purple flowers are really hot right now. Purple Splendor (Lc. Mini Purple x Lc. Culminant) has very large flat flowers in dark purple with classic full-shaped lips.  The plants boom twice a year and are only 10” tall.  Tydea (C. trianae x L. pumila) has large dark purple flowers on small plants - ‘SVO 5x7’ has a 5” flower on a 7” tall plant – very  impressive! This cross will capitalize on the large flower size, great shape, and deep purple color of each parent, and mature plants will be compact at 8-10” tall.  This cross has excellent potential - highly recommended.

SVO 7466
Eplc. Magic Wand (Lc. Trick or Treat 'SVO' 4n x Epc. Kyoguchi 'Peter's Pick’)

This is a great hybrid, and the robust plants grow and bloom well under any conditions. Did I mention that they're also FRAGRANT?!  Yes - they are!  This is a fun cross with a very different look.  Plants are great growers, and many will flower this spring.

Second Release SVO 7471
Pot. Crimson Christmas (Pot. Rubescence 'Ruby' x Pot. Elaine Taylor 'Krull-Smith' FCC/AOS)

As the grex name suggests these are crimson flowers for the Christmas season.  Rubescence (Blc. Oconee x Slc. Seagulls Apricot) is a legendary breeding plant for SVO.  Its dominant traits of good flower shape, color and plant habit have revolutionized modern mini and compact Cattleya breeding. Elaine Taylor (Blc. Oconee x Slc. Judy Smith) has amazing flowers – the FCC/AOS award speaks volumes about its quality.  Oconee is in the ancestry of both parents, which will assure strong color and a deep burgundy lip.  The other two parents bring in considerable influence from Soph. coccinea, which will assure flat flower form, wide round petals and intense color.  Superb flower shape in intense red colors with very dark full-formed burgundy lips on vigorous compact plants that bloom twice a year.  A top-quality hybrid!  Limited availability

SVO 7472
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Goldenzelle 'Lemon Chiffon' AM/AOS x Pot. What About Love 'Brilliant Gold')

Goldenzelle (Blc. Fortune x C. Horace) is a standard sized plant with bulbs 18” tall, and plants require a 6” pot at maturity.  Flowers are large, over 6” across, and held well on strong stems in groups of 3-4. As the name indicates, the cultivar 'Lemon Chiffon' is yellow and has excellent shape with wide petals and a yellow lip with a bright red spot. For years, this Goldenzelle has been considered one of the top standard yellow Cattleyas ever produced. What About Love (Blc. Guess What x Slc. Pure Love) was selected several years back but not until now did I put it to work. The long-lived flowers are intense golden-yellow and held nicely in groups of 3-4. This plant is a mini-Catt, standing just 6” tall, and blooms twice a year.  This cross will deliver nice-sized flowers 4-5” across with wide petals, and plants will mature at 8-10” tall.  Flowers will be yellow, with most having full ruffled red lips.  Optimism abounds when I think about the potential of this cross.

SVO 7473
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Love-Love 'SVO Superior' x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3')

Love-Love (Pot. Love Passion x Blc. Love Sound) has bright golden-yellow flowers with a touch of red on the tip of the lip. Strong stems present the flowers well, and the overall effect is very attractive.  Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red/orange flowers with darker red lips.  It has proven to be an excellent parent, with dominance for color, and sturdy inflorescences.  These are going to be blooming in sunset colors favoring orange and red tones.  Strong stems of well-displayed flowers will make these plants extra showy.

SVO 7476
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Love-Love 'SVO Superior' x Pot. Love Passion 'Island Romance' Dark Red Lip Mutation)

Love-Love (Pot. Love Passion x Blc. Love Sound) has bright golden-yellow flowers with a touch of red on the tip of the lip. Strong stems present the flowers well, and the overall effect is very attractive.  Pot. Love Passion is a superior parent, and the cultivar used here has an unusual dark red spot on the lip.  The addition of Love Passion (Lc. Trick or Treat x Slc. William Farrell) back to Love-Love will emphasize its dominant traits. This cross will produce offspring favoring many of the Love Passion qualities: 7-11 large bright orange flowers with orange lips and a dark red spot on strong stems that display the blooms well above the foliage.

Second Release SVO 7477
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO' AM/AOSx Pot. What About Love 'Brilliant Gold')

Izumi Charm (Blc. Love Sound x Blc. Melody Fair) has well-formed flowers in light yellow with a dark contrasting crimson lip.  Plants are like large compact Cattleyas, standing 14” tall, with sturdy stems that hold the 5-6 flowers high.  What About Love (Blc. Guess What x Slc. Pure Love) was selected several years back but not used for breeding until recently. The long-lived flowers are intense golden-yellow and held nicely in groups of 3-4. This plant is a mini-Catt, standing just 6” tall, and blooms twice a year. The prediction for this cross is intense yellow flowers with excellent shape and dark crimson ruffled lips.  Plants will have a compact growth habit and produce strong stems of 5-7 well-arranged blooms.

Second Release SVO 7479
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Rubescent Fire 'April Rocket' x Slc. Anduril 'Krull's Scarlet' AM/AOS)

Red, red and more red flowers with this cross!  Rubescent Fires (Lc. Spring Fires x Pot. Rubescence) and its excellent-shaped deep red flowers are combined here with the clusters of starry red flowers produced by Anduril (Slc. Jewel Box x Lc. Trick or Treat).  The result will be compact plants with good stems bearing clusters of red flowers.  These will flower in April, well after most other spring red Cattleyas have finished blooming.

SVO 7481
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Krull's Mini Angel 'SVO Red Fire Ball'x Pot. Star Fire 'Rocket Red')

At SVO we have been breeding for the perfect deep red mini-Catt.  These newest crosses are bringing together several generations of progressively improved hybrids to achieve the ultimate goal: classic standard-shaped red flowers with full ruffled lips.  Krull's Mini-Angel (Pot. Elaine Taylor x Pot. Franklin Smith) has nearly perfect shape, and the flat flowers have overlapping petals in dark red with a full darker red lip.  Plants are compact, and flowers are well-displayed.  Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Pot. Rubescence) ‘Rocket Red’ produces 7 flowers in solid saturated red, and the ruffled lip is red, becoming darker red centrally.  This cross is very promising for great color and excellent shape, with well-presented flowers on a compact plant. An excellent modern red Cattleya cross!

SVO 7482
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Jane Pierce 'March Madness' x Pot. Mem. Irene Feil 'Ruby Red' AM/AOS)

Jane Pierce (Pot. Martha Clarke x Slc. Precious Katie) has ruby red flowers, and the lip is ruffled in an intense red-purple with a golden throat.  Amazing color, and the shape is excellent, too.Mem. Irene Feil (Sl. Pink Doll x Pot. Odom's Sweetheart) produces a stunning, flat, round flower in dark blood red.  The lip is very dark red and ruffled with a golden yellow throat.  This style of breeding at SVO is changing our understanding of what compact cattleyas can be.  New crosses like this will deliver flat flowers with amazingly intense red color, wide rounded petals and ruffled tubular lips, all on compact plants barely 8” tall. Limited supply.

SVO 7483
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Ocean Drive 'SVO'x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

Ocean Drive (Lc. Ken Battle x Blc. Bouton D'Or) has many surprisingly nice, intense golden-orange flowers with full-shaped rounded lips that are well-arranged along a 16” stem.  Love Sound is dominant for good breeding qualities such as well-formed flowers, good color, increased flower count, strong stems and a nice plant habit. These are going to produce pure golden-yellow flowers with fuller and broader lips than generally seen in Love Sound hybrids.  The compact plants will produce clusters of 5-9 flowers on strong stems and will be easy to grow and bloom.

Second Release SVO 7484
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. What About Love 'Brilliant Gold' x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

The long-lived flowers are intense golden-yellow and held nicely in groups of 3-4. This plant is a mini-Catt, standing just 6” tall, and blooms twice a year. Love Sound has played an important role in our hybridizing program.  We use it often, as its offspring consistently exhibit good qualities such as well-formed flowers, good color, increased flower count, strong stems and a nice plant habit. These are going to be compact plants with clusters of 4-7 pure golden-yellow flowers on strong stems.  Easy to grow and bloom.

SVO 7485
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Pot. What About Love 'Brilliant Gold')

Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the full-shaped lip.  The blooms have excellent shape, and the compact plant stature and twice-a-year flowering habit make this a desirable parent.  What About Love (Blc. Guess What x Slc. Pure Love) has long-lived flowers in an intense golden-yellow color. The long-lived blooms are produced in groups of 3-4 twice a year on a mini-Catt standing just 6” tall.  Expect these to carry 3-5 excellent solid golden-yellow flowers with good form on strong stems.

Second Release SVO 7488
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. What About Love 'Brilliant Gold' x Pot. Pure Love 'Be Mine' HCC/AOS)

Here we have taken What About Love (Blc. Guess What x Slc. Pure Love) with its intense golden-yellow flowers and crossed it back to one of its parents, Pure Love (Blc. Love Sound x Slc. Seagulls Apricot).  The back cross will double up on the desirable traits from Love Sound: compact plant habit, strong stem, good flower count and rich color.  This cross also will add the excellent flower shape and reduced plant size of Seagulls Apricot.  These will be mini-Catts standing 6” tall.  Sturdy stems will carry 3-5 flowers with wide petals in sunset colors favoring yellow tones.  I expect this cross to have a “high average of quality.”

SVO 7489
Slc. Orquidacea’s Small Fortune (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS x Slc. Kagaribi Dawn 'Red Star')

Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers and transmits high flower count to its offspring.Kagaribi Dawn has a brilliant red flower with a very starry shape influenced by the L. cinnabarina in its background. It really has an eye-catching color and shape; everybody is drawn to these flowers when in bloom.  This cross is all about heads of starry flowers!  These will mostly be red, but some will have a touch of orange, and great stems will hold the flowers high.  This is a very showy novelty style of hybrid.

Second Release SVO 7490
Lc. Fire Gem (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS x Lc. Aussie Sunset 'Cosmic Fire' HCC/AOS)

Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers. Aussie Sunset (Lc. Fires of Spring x C. Gene May) has a red-orange flower with a yellow splash, and the blooms are held above the foliage in clusters of 4-6. Great potential here for orange flowers with yellow flares.  Plants are good growers and will produce 7-9 flowers per stem. This an excellent cross - check out this Picture..  Plants are easy to grow and bloom, and they produce nice heads of colorful flowers in March and April.

Second Release SVO 7491
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Mem. Irene Feil 'Ruby Red' AM/AOS x Pot. Lebenkries 'Diamond Orchids' )

Mem. Irene Feil (Sl. Pink Doll x Pot. Odom's Sweetheart) has a stunning, flat, round flower in dark blood red, and the nicely ruffled lip is a very dark red with a golden yellow throat. Lebenkries (Pot. Rubescence x Slc. Circle of Life) is truly amazing!  The ‘Diamond Orchids’ cultivar is flat, full, deep red and blooms twice a year.  Just exceptional!  This cross is an example of how we are reinventing compact Cattleya breeding.  This new cross will deliver amazing intense red color and flat flowers with wide rounded petals, all on compact plants standing barely 8” tall.

SVO 7493
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Star Fire 'Ruben's Red' x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Pot. Rubescence) ‘Ruben’s Red’ is an impressive sight!  The 7 well-supported red flowers have good shape with ruffled lips in darker red.  Quite memorable!  Breeding Star Fire back to Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) with its heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers will nearly double the flower count of the offspring.  Expect red flowers with dark red lips.  The shape will be fuller than Trick or Treat but still a little starry.  Nice clusters of red blooms well above the foliage is always very showy.

SVO 7494
Bul. NEW HYBRID (Epc. Kyoguchi 'Peters Pick' x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

What a novelty hybrid this is! One parent, Kyoguchi (Enc. aromatica x Gur. aurantiaca), has branched inflorescences with yellow flowers that are highly fragrant.  Love Sound has proven itself over and over as a valuable breeder and is dominant for yellow flower color and good form, stem and plant habit.  This combination will make a Bullara (abbreviated Bul.).  Plants are vigorous and will start to flower in 3” pots, maturing in 4” pots. These will carry well-formed yellow flowers with red striped lips, and some will have fragrance and a branching inflorescence from the Kyoguchi.  This is an outstanding cross!

Second Release SVO 7496
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Angel’s Fantasy 'Solar Flare' FCC/AOS x Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS)

Angel's Fantasy is super nice!  The flowers are just spectacular, and the FCC/AOS award to 'Solar Flare' says a lot about flower quality.  This plant is also a good grower and flowers twice a year. The parents of Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) are very prestigious, and this cross produces bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the full lip.  Blooms have excellent shape, the compact plant flowers twice a year.  What are we expecting?  Angel’s Fantasy has been an excellent parent for rich color, flares and good form.  Mem. Jim Nickou is equally strong for shape, color and plant vigor.  These are going to have large, shapely, flat, full flowers in clear bright yellow with red flares on the petals.  The lips will be full and yellow, tipped in red. These compact plants will flower in 3” pots and when bloom twice a year when mature.

SVO 7497
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot.Lovely Martha 'SVO' x Slc. Anduril 'Krull's Scarlet' AM/AOS)

Lovely Martha (Blc. Fuchs Orange Nugget x Pot. Martha Clarke) has salmon/orange colored flowers with the tips of the petals flared in red.  The lip is broad, and the 4-5 flowers are well-held. Anduril (Slc. Jewel Box x Lc. Trick or Treat) produces clusters of starry reds on sturdy stems.  Both parents bloom in April, and the progeny should as well.  Great stems, red flowers, fine form – a very promising combination.

SVO 7499
Slc. Fire Magic (Lc. Tokyo Magic 'Kitty' x Slc. Fire Fantasy 'Royalty')

Fire Magic almost needs no introduction.  H&R Nurseries first made and offered this cross about 10 years ago, and it was an instant success.  The compact plants produced vibrantly-colored flared flowers in ruby-red and yellow.  Although each plant was slightly different in color and pattern, all had uniformly shapely, well-presented flowers, making this cross a home run!  This is a remake, and we expect similarly excellent results.

SVO 7500
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Louise Clarke 'Outstanding' x Pot. Hawaiian Prominence 'Hawaii' AM/AOS)

Louise Clarke (Pot. Golden Circle x Pot. Rubescence) has such a nice flower!  When you look at the picture it’s hard to tell that this isn’t a standard Cattleya with a flower 7” across.  It’s actually a 4” flower on a 6” tall plant blooming in a 3” pot!!!  Hawaiian Prominence (Blc. Hisako Akatsuka x Slc. Wendy's Redstone) has an eye-catching color combination: deep velvety ruby purple with a ruby purple lip and bright yellow throat.  Flowers are large at 4.5” across with plants barely 10” tall. With this cross we are looking for unusual deep colors in vibrant purple-red with full shaped ruffled lips and a yellow throat.  The petals will be flat and wide.  This will be a compact plant with mature bulbs at 8” tall and first blooms in 3” pots.

SVO 7501
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Ruby Maker 'SVO' x Pot. Lebenkries 'Diamond Orchids')

Ruby Maker (Pot. Mem. Ralph Smith x Pot. Rubescence) has burgundy red flowers, a darker ruffled lip and a surprisingly strong stem that holds 4-5 large flowers. Lebenkries (Pot. Rubescence x Slc. Circle of Life) is truly amazing!  The ‘Diamond Orchids’ cultivar is flat, full, deep red and blooms twice a year.  Just exceptional!  The doubling up of Rubescence will assure several important color and form attributes.  Flower color will be deep burgundy red, and the full, ruffled lip will be darker red.  Excellent flower shape is expected, with 3-4 well-presented blooms.  Very nice!

SVO 7511
Pot. NEW HYBRID [(Pot. Yellow Ball x Pot. Burana Beauty) 'Spectacular Bid' x Lc. Tropical Aurora 'SVO']

‘Spectacular Bid’ has a bright yellow flower with a touch of red in the lip.  Flowers have exceptional shape, are well-presented and, remarkably, quite fragrant, which is unusual for a yellow Cattleya. These will produce strong stems of 4-7 well-formed flowers in bright yellow with red lips, and some will be fragrant!  The reciprocal is available as SVO 7454.

Second Release SVO 7512
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Al Thanhauser 'Best One' x Pot. Rubescence 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Al Thanhauser (C. Orchidglade x Pot. Rubescence) ‘Best One’ was hard to pick from the first-bloom plants.  They were all so uniform, but it was the rounded dark red flowers with sparkling texture that caught my eye.  This beauty now reliably blooms twice a year with a strong stem holding 4-5 well-arranged flowers.  Rubescence (Blc. Oconee x Slc. Seagulls Apricot) is a legendary breeding plant for SVO.  Its dominant traits of good flower shape, color and plant habit have revolutionized modern mini and compact Cattleya breeding.  Crossing Rubescence back to Al Thanhauser is an example of line breeding - repeatedly using a parent with positive traits to reinforce those traits in the offspring.  The doubling up of Rubescence will assure a rich deep red color, beautiful shape and a dark burgundy fully ruffled lip.  We are expecting the strong stem to carry 3 large flowers on compact plants standing 8-10” tall.

Second Release SVO 7514
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette' #3' x Pot. Star Fire ‘Ruben's Red')

This grex was made to further develop our breeding program to produce intensely-colored, deep red flowers held high on sturdy stems. Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red flowers with darker red lips and has been a frequent contributor to this breeding direction, as it has proven to be an excellent parent.  The flowers of Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Rubescence) are deep vibrant red, have nice shape, and are produced 5-7 on a strong stem.  I believe this cross will be a significant step in this style of breeding.  Plants will have sturdy, upright stems holding 5-7 deep red flowers with darker red lips.  Plants will be compact and easy to bloom.

SVO 7519
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette' #3' x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Hawaii Trip'3)

Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red flowers with darker red lips and has proven to be an excellent parent. Pot. Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound) is named after my wife, so you know it’s a special cross.  Marthas have great flower color, shape and growth habit, and are easy to bloom.  It’s hard to improve on these parents, but this might just be the combination that incorporates the best of both.  These are expected to have great stems holding 7-9 flowers above the foliage.  Colors will range from solid red to medium yellow brushed with red flares, and all the flowers will have dark red lips.

Second Release SVO 7521
C. Memorial Chuang Wen-Hsien (C. nobilior 'SVO' 4n x C. violacea 'Muse' FCC/AOS)

I am expecting dark purple colors and spade-shaped lips with prominent veins.  I’m really looking forward to watching these grow and flower.  Very Limited supply.

SVO 7525
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Martha Clarke ‘Outstanding' x Lc. Tropical Aurora 'SVO')

Pot. Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound) is named after my wife, so you know it’s a special cross.  Plants from this grex have great flower color, shape and growth habit, and are easy to bloom. Tropical Aurora (Lc. Aussie Sunset x Lc. Tokyo Magic) is a special plant with considerable potential.  Flowers are a pure, very bright yellow - the most intense yellow imaginable – with a contrasting red lip.  I think this combination will combine the best qualities of both parents.  These compact plants are expected to have great stems holding 5-7 flowers above the foliage.  Colors will range from solid yellow to yellow-orange brushed with red flares, and all the flowers will have dark red lips.

SVO 7526
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL' x Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS)

The potential for this cross is amazing.  Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) ‘OPRL' ( ‘Orange Petals Red Lip’) has superb form with 3.5” orange flowers and red lips produced twice a year on 6” tall plants. Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has well-formed, flat, bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the full-shaped lip.  It also blooms twice a year.  Breeding plants to bloom reliably twice a year takes careful thought and selection, and this cross should deliver in that category.  Flowers will range from yellow to orange and all colors in between, many with contrasting red lips.  These will start flowering in 3" pots and will flower twice a year when mature.

SVO 7530
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Fordyce Prelude 'Pinnacle' AM/AOS x Lc. Tropical Aurora 'SVO')

Fordyce Prelude (Slc. California Apricot x Blc. Horizon Flight) produces flat yellow-orange flowers with a prominent red splash, and the full-shaped lip is yellow-orange with red edges. Tropical Aurora (Lc. Aussie Sunset x Lc. Tokyo Magic) is very bright yellow with a contrasting red lip. It‘s interesting that the red flaring of Aussie Sunset is not expressed in the flowers - it must be a recessive trait.  Breeding it to another flared parent will hopefully unlock its potential. The expectation is for bright yellow flowers with red flares on the petals and red lips with yellow throats, well arranged in heads of 4-6 on upright stems.

Second Release SVO 7532
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL' x Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS)

Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) is one of my most reliable breeding plants. ‘OPRL' (‘Orange Petals Red Lip’) has superb form, with 3.5” orange flowers and red lips produced twice a year on 6” tall plants.  Tokyo Magic (Lc. Irene Finney x L. briegeri) has yellow flowers with a red lip and is a great breeder that has produced many successful hybrids.  It imparts good shape, strong stems and a compact plant habit.  Here we a looking for 3-4 solid golden-yellow flowers, deep red lips, wide petals and excellent shape on well-supported stems.

Second Release SVO 7533
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Fordyce Prelude 'Pinnacle' AM/AOS x Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS)

Fordyce Prelude (Slc. California Apricot x Blc. Horizon Flight) produces flat yellow-orange flowers with a prominent red splash, and the full-shaped lip is yellow-orange with red edges. Tokyo Magic (Lc. Irene Finney x L. briegeri) has yellow flowers with a red lip.  It is a great breeder, imparting good shape, strong stems and a compact plant habit.  This grex will produce 5-6 well-supported yellow flowers with wide petals flared in red with dark red lips and yellow throats.

SVO 7535
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Hawaii Trip')

Famous parents bred Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort), producing plants that bear well-formed, flat, bright yellow flowers with just a bit of red on the full-shaped lip.  As a bonus, this beauty blooms twice a year.  My wife’s namesake, Martha Clarke (Blc. Love Sound x Slc. Circle of Life), has equally famous parents and has also produced many excellent cultivars.  'Hawaii Trip’ was spotted in bloom at a Hawaiian grower’s greenhouses and is outstanding, with excellent flower shape and color.  When you study the breeding results of these two parents and their ancestors, you realize that this cross has outstanding potential. These will bloom with sunset colors in yellow and orange, some will have the petals tipped in red, and lips will be red and yellow.  Sturdy stems will present 3-4 beautifully-formed flowers.

SVO 7536
Slc. Granata Sunrise (Slc. Wasp Nest ‘Red Red’ HCC/AOS x Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS)

Back by popular demand, this is a reliable and colorful cross!  Clusters of 5-9 flowers in a variety of tropical sunset colors are presented above the foliage on strong stems.  Plants are compact growers and can produce 3-4 inflorescences by the time they're in 4” pots.  This makes for *lots* of color in a small space!  This Picture 3983 is a good example of the quality from this cross. This Picture is a good example of the quality from this cross.

SVO 7537
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette' #3' x Slc. Kagaribi Dawn 'Red Star')

Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) is a popular parent, as it imparts strong upright stems carrying 5-9 red flowers with darker red lips.  Kagaribi Dawn has a brilliant red flower with a starry shape influenced by the L. cinnabarina in its background.  ‘Red Star’ has an eye-catching color and shape; everybody is drawn to these flowers when it’s in bloom.  These will produce star-shaped novelty-style dark red flowers on upright stems.

SVO 7538
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Tropical Aurora 'SVO' x Pot. Martha’s Charm ‘Mother's Day')

Tropical Aurora (Lc. Aussie Sunset x Lc. Tokyo Magic) has very bright yellow flowers - almost unimaginably bright - offset by a contrasting red lip. Martha’s Charm (Pot. Martha Clarke x Blc. Izumi Charm) flowers just in time for Mother's Day with beautifully-shaped soft yellow flowers blushed in pink.  One of the factors in deciding to make this cross was bloom period.  Both parents flower in early May, a very welcome sight as many Cattleyas are winding down by then. These will have wide yellow petals, some blushed pink, and all with red lips.  Sturdy stems will hold 4-5 flowers above the foliage.

Second Release SVO 7541
B. David Sander (B. David Sander 'SVO' AM/AOS
x B. David Sander 'Just as Nice')
This is a sibling cross between two very nice B. David Sander (B. cucullata x B. digbyana ).  I get so many inquiries about this grex and I understand why, given the pencil-thin bulbs and leaves topped by flowers that look like a huge B. cucullata.  Here I have sib crossed my two best plants, which are vigorous growers and bloomers.  These won’t last long.

SVO 7542
Pot. Martha’s Sunburst (Pot. Tokyo Life 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Orange Tart’ )

Tokyo Life (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Slc. Circle of Life) has been successful on several levels.  The compact plant produces warm sunset-colored flowers with excellent shape.  Martha Clarke (Blc. Love Sound x Slc. Circle of Life) is such a good grex I named it after my wife!  The cultivar 'Orange Tart' is one of the best, with excellent shape, color and nice plant habit, plus a twice-a-year blooming habit.  When you study the breeding, you see Circle of Life on both sides, and looking even deeper you find the rupicolous L. briegeri on both sides as well.  This ancestry gives an indication of what to expect.  Plants will be compact, and flower color will range from light sunset colors to brighter yellows and oranges.  Flowers will have nice form, with wide petals on a strong stem holding 3-4 blooms.  Very nice. Take a look at a first bloom Picture

SVO 7545
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Jane Pierce 'March Madness' x Slc. Anduril 'Krull's Scarlet' AM/AOS)

Jane Pierce (Pot. Martha Clarke x Slc. Precious Katie) has ruby red flowers with a ruffled lip that is intensely red-purple with a golden throat.  Amazing color, and the shape is excellent too! Anduril (Slc. Jewel Box x Lc. Trick or Treat) produces clusters of starry red flowers on sturdy stems.  Expect sturdy stems of 4-5 really red flowers with really red lips on compact plants.

Second Release SVO 7550
Lctna. Jane Austen (Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS x Ctna. Why Not 'Makana Ke Akua' HCC/AOS)

You don’t see muchBroughtonia breeding these days, so we decided make a few new hybrids along these lines.  MostBroughtonia hybrid flowers range from red to purple, but here at SVO we’re always trying to do something a little different.  How about yellow flowered Laeliocattleytonias?   Tokyo Magic (Lc. Irene Finney x L. briegeri) has yellow flowers with a red lip.  It is a great breeder proven to impart good shape, strong stems and a compact plant habit.  This Why Not (C. aurantiaca x Bro. sanguinea) is a very rare color from – a pure yellow flower – whereas most are shades of red.  This cross will produce yellow flowers favoring the recognizable rounded Broughtonia shape.  Lips will be broad and tipped with red, and stiff wiry stems will hold 7-9 flowers on a compact plant standing 8” tall.  This is a really interesting hybrid with a new look!

Second Release SVO 7558
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Lebenkries 'Diamond Orchids' x Pot. Elaine Taylor 'Krull-Smith' FCC/AOS)

Lebenkries (Pot. Rubescence x Slc. Circle of Life) is truly amazing!  The ‘Diamond Orchids’ cultivar is flat, full, deep red and blooms twice a year.  Just exceptional!  Elaine Taylor (Blc. Oconee x Slc. Judy Smith) has amazing flowers, and the FCC/AOS award speaks volumes to its quality.  Expect superb flower shape from this cross.  Blooms will be an intense red with full-formed darker burgundy lips.  Plants are vigorous and compact, blooming twice a year.  A top-quality hybrid.

Second Release SVO 7585
L. Zip (L. tenebrosa 'Paul' AM/AOS x L. milleri 'Dr. Koopowitz Red' HCC/AOS)

This remake of Laelia Zip combines some of the finest parents available. Expect clusters of sparkling bronze-red flowers with contrasting dark purple lips held high on strong inflorescences.  Highly recommended - don’t miss out on these! Here is a picture of the first to bloom click here.     Also available as SVO 7180.  You know a cross is good when I make it twice!  Just a few of this number available.

Second Release SVO 7636
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Jalapa 'Ruben' 4N x B. Jimminey Cricket ‘Super Bug’ HCC/AOS)

Jalapa (C. leopoldii x L. milleri) has strong upright spikes with deep red flowers spotted in dark burgundy. Jimminey Cricket (B. nodosa x B. digbyana) has light green segments with a large white lip veined in light green.  This is a speculative combination with some big potential.  What if these come out red with darker red lips and have the shape of the Jimminey Cricket?  Hmmm…   Only a few of these plants are available.

SVO 7737
Lc. Miss Wonderful (Lc. Mari's Song 'CTM 217' HCC/AOS x L. anceps 'Irwin's' 4n AM/AOS)

Miss Wonderful has been a fantastic hybrid, truly deserving of its name!  We remake this every couple years, as it really is wonderful.  Over the years we have made this grex with different parents and have learned that when Mari’s Song is crossed to L. anceps ‘Irwin’s’ we get excellent quality flowers. These are strong-growing plants and easy to bloom, producing large flowers with excellent flares, well-presented on 12 to 18” long inflorescences. A few examples from the previous crosses:  Picture,   Picture,   Picture

SVO 7745
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Tropical Song 'Calypso' x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Tropical Song (Lc. Tropic Glow x Lc. Mari's Song) has cool looking tri-colored flowers: sepals are pink and petals are purple, splashed in yellow.  Good stems hold 4-5 flowers above the foliage.  Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) is a favorite breeder of ours and is dominant for vibrant orange-yellow flowers in clusters of 8-9 on strong stems.  Here we are breeding for multi-colored splash-petalled flowers.

SVO 7839
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Magic Melody 'Starburst' x L. anceps 'Helen')

Magic Melody (Lc. Tokyo Magic x Lc. Melody Fair) ‘Starburst’ has an impressive flower!  The blooms are pure white, with the petals tipped in red, lateral sepals showing a touch of yellow, and a crimson lip.  The stem is very strong, easily supporting 5-7 large well-arranged flowers.  This anceps carries 4 solid pink flowers on long stems.  I am very optimistic about this cross!  Expect 5-6 well-shaped light pink flowers with red lips on arching stems.  These will be easy-to-grow plants and will make an impressive display when in bloom.

Spotted

Spotted flowers have been a favorite of mine for years. Seeing those wonderful spots in the heat of summer is a spectacular sight. Today the development of spotted breeding includes flowers that bloom in a wide range of color choices.  SVO is renowned for its breeding of yellow flowers with red spots and the new line of spotted coerulea flower crosses are not to be missed.

SVO 6886
C. NEW HYBRID (C. Mark Jones 'Lance' 4N x C. Caudebec 'Linwood'4N)

Summer-blooming Cattleyas are always welcome during this usually slack time for blooming. This cross is going to have seriously spotty flowers. Mark Jones (Caudebec x Fascelis) has very wide petals, possibly the widest in modern spotted breeding.  Caudebec ‘Linwood’ is a superior tetraploid mutation that came from the cloning of Caudebec ‘Carmela’.  These are going to have lots of large flowers with heavy substance, wide petals, flat shape, deep red lips and lots of spots.  An excellent choice for summer spots!

SVO 6900
Pot. Naomi’s Delight (Blc. Sun Spots 'Sandy' AM/AOS x Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

Yellow flowers with red spots are a favorite combination at SVO.  These two parents are proven breeders in this style.  Sun Spots (C. Mark Jones x Blc. SunCoast Sunspots) imparts high flower count and large flower size.  Katherine Clarkson (Mark Jones x Jungle Gem) breeds compact plants, excellent flower shape and possibly twice-a-year flowering.  Combining all these traits will produce bright yellow flowers with red spots and a red lip.  Plants will mature at 10-12” tall and produce sturdy stems of 4-7 flowers.  As a bonus, some of these will bloom twice a year.

Second Release SVO 6986
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Waianae Leopard 'Chin Hua' HCC/AOS x Lc. Jalapa 'SVO' Select' 4n)

Developing burgundy-spotted red flowers is one of the recent breeding goals at SVO.  Waianae Leopard produces a densely clustered group of showy spotted flowers on a strong stem.  Jalapa (C. leopoldii x L. milleri) produces strong stems of 15 or more blooms in deep red with dark maroon spots held well above the foliage on compact plants 12” tall.  This breeding will produce flowers on strong upright stems in deep reds with dark maroon spots.  Plants will be floriferous and have compact closely-spaced bulbs thanks to the influence of L. milleri.  This is a good opportunity to acquire plants with a brand new look in Cattleya flowers.

SVO 7124
C. Comets Tail (C. Landate 'SVO 4n' x C. aclandiae 'Kathleen III' 4n AM/AOS)

Bifoliate cattleyas are some of my favorites.  The colors, spots, fragrance and the fact that they bloom in summer are all good reasons to grow them.  This is a tetraploid grex, which is rare in bifoliate breeding.  The desirable traits of Landate (C. aclandiae x C. leopoldii) will be reinforced by the addition of C. aclandiae.  Expect large flower size with heavy substance.  These will look like a super improved C. aclandiae with 3-4 flowers on a stem.  This is one of those “very cool” hybrids; even species nuts will appreciate this cross.  Here is an example to whet your appetite Picture

SVO 7155
C. Mrs. Mahler (C. bicolor f. coerulea 'SVO' x C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS)

C. Mrs. Mahler ‘Mem Fred Tompkins’ AM/AOS is an iconic plant.  So what could be better?  How about the coerulea from?  This has to be a first in the history of orchid breeding.  Tall plants with impressive heads of light blue flowers, some spotted, and a dark blue lip.  Talk about collectable!!!  The identical cross is available as SVO 7578, and the reciprocal cross is available as SVO 7156.  I must’ve really wanted to make these!

SVO 7155t
C. Mrs. Mahler (C. bicolor f. coerulea 'SVO' x C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS)

Same as SVO 7155, but the protocorms were treated with oryzalin (t), a chemical that can double the number of chromosomes.  The hope is that some of these will be tetraploids, and the ones that are will be very desirable.  The reciprocal cross is also available as SVO 7156t.

SVO 7156
C. Mrs. Mahler (C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS x C. bicolor f. coerulea 'SVO')

Same as SVO 7156, but the protocorms were treated with oryzalin (t), a chemical that can double the number of chromosomes.  The hope is that some of these will be tetraploids, and the ones that are will be very desirable. The reciprocal cross is also available as SVO 7155t.

SVO 7159
C. Mareeba Tiger (C. leopoldii ' SVO Dark Wonder' 4n x C. schilleriana 'Afri' SM/JOGA)

The best possible parents were used in this cross.  Most of us have seen C. Landate (C. leopoldii x C. aclandiae) and C. Peckhaviensis (C. aclandiae x C. schilleriana), which bloom with 3-5 very showy and fragrant flowers.  However, C. Mareeba Tiger combines the high flower count from C. leopoldii (15-25) with the 5-7 blooms of C. schilleriana.  I believe these will bloom with 9-15 huge 5” flowers.  Blooms will be nicely fragrant and dark chestnut brown with darker spotting and a broad intense magenta lip.  Like a super floriferous schilleriana!  Here is your chance to get something great.

SVO 7161
C. NEW HYBRID (C. Leoloddiglossa f. coerulea 'SVO Speckled Blue' FCC/AOS x C. Pittiae f. coerulea 'SVO Best')

Leoloddiglossa was a significant development in coerulea flowers with blue spots.  The cultivar ‘SVO Speckled Blue’ received an FCC/AOS, indicating high-quality flowers and a vigorous plant. Pittiae (C. loddigesii x C. schilleriana) produces rather large coerulea flowers on a 10” tall plant. Although the flowers are not very spotted, the potential for passing on spots from its schilleriana ancestor is good.  This hybrid will exhibit the exceptional qualities of the spotted species in its background:  C. amethystoglossa, C. schilleriana and C. leopoldii.  Plants will mature at 10-12” tall and bloom with 7-10 large, spotted blue flowers displayed above the foliage. This cross is highly recommended and represents the cutting edge in blue spotted breeding.

C. NEW HYBRID (C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS x C. Pittiae f. coerulea 'SVO Best')

This is a great pairing, as it combines the coerulea color form of Pittiae (C. loddigesii x C. schilleriana) with the high flower count of C. leopoldii.  These are going to be coerulea flowers with blue spots, and the lip will be dark blue with a contrasting yellow throat.  The strong stems will display 10-15 well-arranged flowers.  Plant size will be a very manageable – just 12” tall when mature.  This is a very collectable hybrid, and I can hardly wait to see these bloom!  Very limited plant availability.  The same cross as SVO 7546 with a different cultivar of C. Pittiae.

SVO 7178
C. Krull’s Spotted Angel (C. Lulu 'Hot Pink' AM/AOS x C. Mark Jones 'Lance’)

Both of these parents are really nice spotted Catts.  Lulu (C. Brabantiae x C. Penny Kuroda) ‘Hot Pink’ is aptly named, and this cultivar carries hot pink flowers in clusters of 10-11 on good upright stems.  Mark Jones (Caudebec x Fascelis) has very wide petals, possibly the widest in modern spotted breeding.  I am really looking forward to this combination!  Expect large pink flowers with dark pink spots, wide petals and bright fuchsia lips.

C. NEW HYBRID (C. Interglossa f. coerulea ‘SVO Blue Splash’ x C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS)

Coerulea flowers with blue spots is pretty cool, but why stop there?  How about adding blue flares on the petals?  Interglossa (intermedia v. aquinii x amethystoglossa) has coerulea flowers with blue flares on the petals and a few blue spots.  Breeding it to the spotted leopoldii f. coerulea will accentuate the spots.  Even though one parent is flared, not all the offspring will produce flared blue flowers, but approximately half will.  Look for spotted coerulea flowers with dark blue lips.

C. Leoloddiglossa f. coerulea (C. Leoloddiglossa f. coerulea 'SVO Sweet Spots'x C. Leoloddiglossa f. coerulea 'Exotic Orchids' AM/AOS)
The hottest Cattleya breeding trend is spotted coerulea (blue) flowers.  C. Leoloddiglossa has been a remarkable hybrid, the first highly successful coerulea flower with blue spots!!  The background includes three Cattleya species: leopoldii, loddigesii, amethystoglossa, thus the name: Leoloddiglossa (leo-loddi-glossa).  This sibling cross is made with two fantastic cultivars, each with great color and spots.  Both are vigorous growers and produce good heads of flowers, and the progeny will express these same qualities.  An excellent cross that needs to be a part of your collection.

Interglossa (intermedia x amethystoglossa) is a coerulea aquinii or blue flared flower, and its breeding potential is very exciting.  Have you ever imagined a flower with coerulea sepals peppered with darker blue spots and petals flared in blue?  C. Leoloddiglossa ‘SVO Speckled Blue' is the best of the best, earning an FCC/AOS for its excellent flower shape and color and well-presented flowers.  These are robust plants and already are showing fantastic growth.  The best of these will be very special!  Do NOT miss out on this one.

C. Fascelis (C. bicolor f. alba 'Green Goddess' x C. aclandiae f. alba 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Not 100% sure these will be albas but OMG – what if they are?  Alba bifoliate cattleyas?  Yep – how cool is that?  The rare color forms of the species needed to make this hybrid are hard to come by, and it has taken years of searching and selecting.  This has to be a first in Cattleya breeding.  Based on lack of pigmentation in the seedlings, it sure looks like these will be albescent.

Slc. Elisabeth Calov (C. Mark Jones 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

Mark Jones (Caudebec x Fascelis) has cream-colored flowers with bold spots and very wide petals, perhaps the widest in spotted breeding today.  That petal width is responsible for the fine shape of Katherine Clarkson (C. Mark Jones x Slc.  Katherine), a breakthrough in modern breeding for yellow flowers with red spots.  Crossing Mark Jones back to Katherine Clarkson will double up the genes for petal shape and spotting while still allowing the yellow coloration to prevail.  Super shapely yellow flowers with red spots and red lips produced 4-6 per stem.

C. NEW HYBRID (C. Green Emerald 'Emerald Queen Mutation’ x C. Love Chance 'Green White Lip 4n')

Breeding for the perfect green flower with burgundy spots is the goal here.  My plant of Green Emerald (C. Elizabeth Mahon x C. Thospol Spot) was given to me by Mr. Kao from Ching Hua Orchid Nursery in Taiwan and is a mutation that originated from the cloning of 'Emerald Queen' AM/AOS.  The plant is 10” tall with 5-6 green flowers densely spotted in burgundy with red lips and a substance that I would describe as “rock hard.”  C. Love Chance (Landate x loddigesii) normally has spotted flower but ‘Green White Lip’ is just that – a green flower with a white lip, also with “rock hard” substance.  The plant has a compact stature at just 12” tall.  I expect green flowers with bold burgundy spots.  As for lip color…well… one parent has a red lip and the other white…hmmm.  How cool would it be to have white lips?  The reciprocal is available as SVO 7322.

C. Aurantiglossa (C. amethystoglossa 'SVO' 2n x C. aurantiaca 'Mishima Spots' 2n)

This is a different type of cross for SVO.  Spotted flowers have always been a passion of mine, and most spotted crosses flower in the summer and fall.  However, this grex will bloom in March!  C. amethystoglossa’s pink flowers with pink spots and darker lip are spectacular!  Check out the picture of ‘SVO’.  C. aurantiaca ‘Mishima Spots’ is the original and very rare spotted color form.  I am expecting these to be spotted flowers, but no hybrids with the spotted aurantiaca have been flowered before.  A little speculative but potentially very exciting!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Black Jack 'Universal' HCC/AOS x Pot. Lots of Spots 'SVO')

Summer-blooming spotted Catts are among my favorites.  Nothing like those heads of spotted flowers!  Black Jack (C. Thospol Spot x C. Love Chance) has a relatively small plant habit – about 10” tall – and blooms with 5-6 densely spotted flowers.  Lots of Spots (Slc. Katherine Clarkson x Blc. Leopard Gem) is also a compact-growing plant, maturing at 10-12” tall, with well-shaped spotted flowers presented on strong upright stems.  These will produce spotted flowers on compact plants that stay under 12” tall, and strong stems will hold 5-6 flowers above the foliage.  Flowers will be light yellow with dense burgundy spots and a bright red lip.

C. Mareeba Tiger f. coerulea  (C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS x C. schilleriana f. coerulea 'Good Color')

How about this – C. Mareeba Tiger in the coerulea color form!!!  This cross combines the high flower count of 15-25 blooms from C. leopoldii with the 4-5 flowers of C. schilleriana.  This is a grex that I believe will carry 7-12 flowers per stem and possibly more.  Blooms will be fragrant and light coerulea in color with darker spotting and a broad blue lip.  Like a super high-flowered blue schilleriana!  Here’s your chance to get something really great!  These protocorms were treated with oryzalin (t), a chemical that can double the number of chromosomes.  The hope is that some of these will be highly desirable tetraploids.

C. NEW HYBRID (C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS x C. Pittiae f. coerulea 'SVO Best Blue')

Blue spotted flowers – wow, who would have thought?  This cross brings together three important species: C. leopoldii, C. loddigesii and C. schilleriana.  The coerulea color forms of these species are very rare in nature, and acquiring select plants for breeding has taken many years.  This Pittiae has flat flowers with coerulea petals and sepals spotted in darker blue, and a dark coerulea lip with a yellow throat.  The coerulea form of Pittiae already has received four AOS awards, and the next generation should be even better!  Crossing Pittiae with a coerulea leopoldii will reinforce the spotting, increase flower count and strengthen the stem.  This is a super nice and very unusual spotted coerulea cross, and is not to be missed!  The same cross as SVO 7162 with a different cultivar of C. Pittiae.

This cross adds leopoldii f. coerulea spots and flower count back to the coerulea Gaudii (Cattleya loddigesii x Cattleya leopoldii) with its large flat flowers.  Here we are counting on the coerulea flowers to be densely spotted.  In many ways, this cross will look like a super coerulea C. leopoldii.  Don’t miss out!  The same as SVO 7548, but the protocorms were treated with oryzalin (t), a chemical that can double the number of chromosomes.  The hope is that some of these will be highly desirable tetraploids.

C. NEW HYBRID (C.Leoloddiglossa f. coerulea 'SVO Speckled Blue' FCC/AOS x C. Little Leopard f. coerulea 'Nite Shade')

Leoloddiglossa has been a remarkable hybrid, the first highly successful coerulea (blue) flower with darker coerulea spots!!! The lineage of Leoloddiglossa contains three Cattleya species: leopoldii, loddigesii, and amethystoglossa, thus the name: Leoloddiglossa (leo-loddi-glossa).  'SVO Speckled Blue’ has excellent shape and color, and carries 20 or more well-presented flowers.  Receiving an FCC/AOS is one of the highest accolades a plant can get.  Little Leopard (C. aclandiae x C. amethystoglossa) is a unique flower, and ‘Nite Shade’ is the only coerulea color form of this cross I know of.  Flowers are spotted, and the lip is coerulea, as is the column.   This is our first hybrid with Little Leopard, and we anticipate that it will significantly reduce plant size, maintain the coerulea color and spotting, and transmit coerulea-colored columns to some of its offspring.

SVO 7561
C. Something Else f. coerulea (C. bicolor f. coerulea 'SVO' x C. schilleriana f. coerulea 'Good Color’)

This must be a first in coerulea breeding.  The coerulea color form of bicolor is very rare and has only became available recently.  The coerulea from of schilleriana became available in the late 1980’s when the cultivar ‘Orchidglade’ was cloned and widely distributed.  It is interesting to note that many of these unusual color forms are very rare in nature, and thanks to selective breeding there are many more available in cultivation.  This cross is all about the lips!  Both bicolor and schilleriana are known for their large, broad lips and these coerulea lips really will be “something else.”

SVO 7564
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Jungle Hotspot 'SVO Splash Spots' x Blc. Sunspots 'Sandy' AM/AOS)

One of the breeding ideas I have been working to develop lately is yellow flowers with red spots AND red flares.  Sound interesting?   The idea took hold with Jungle Hotspot (Slc. Jungle Gem x C. Penny Kuroda), which has light-yellow sepals spotted in red, and white petals flared in purple, with an unusual purple lip.  Sunspots (C. Mark Jones x Blc. SunCoast Sunspots) has yellow flowers, bold spots and a red lip. Here we are hoping that the yellow color from Sunspots will improve the color of the progeny, reinforce the spots and still allow for some flares to come through.  This cross is a bit speculative, but sometimes you have to take a chance. Here is the first to bloom!  Check out the PICTURE   This makes us happy!

SVO 7565
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Pot. Dendi's Gem 'SVO Best')

This cross is designed to produce well-formed yellow flowers with red spots and flat crimson-red lips.  Katherine Clarkson (C. Mark Jones x Slc. Jungle Gem) was the first grex with really nice, large yellow flowers and red spots on a compact plant.  Dendi’s Gem (Blc. SunCoast Sunspots x Slc. Jungle Gem) is a very successful cross, with wide flat petals in bright yellow, a few red spots and a yellow lip.  Jungle Gem appears in the background of both parents and is a small plant, just 6” tall.  I’m counting on the stature of Jungle Gem to make this grex a yellow-flowered red-spotted mini-Catt that blooms twice a year.  A very nice addition to any mini-Catt collection. Some are coming out orange with red spots and a red lip!

SVO 7566
C. NEW HYBRID (C. Leoloddiglossa f. coerulea 'SVO Speckled Blue' FCC/AOS x C. schilleriana f. coerulea 'Good Color’)

The lineage of Leoloddiglossa contains three Cattleya species: leopoldii, loddigesii, and amethystoglossa, thus the name: Leoloddiglossa (leo-loddi-glossa).  'SVO Speckled Blue’ has excellent shape and coerulea color, and carries 20 or more well-presented flowers.  This schilleriana has flowers with more blue spots than usual and a large, broad, dark coerulea lip on a plant just 7” tall.  The objective here is to maintain the coerulea color and dark blue spots, increase lip size, reduce plant stature to 10-12” tall and hopefully not reduce flower count too much.  I might name this cross C. Leoloddiglossiana…Outstanding potential here for compact plants with heads of large coerulea flowers with darker spots and a broad flat blue lips.  Not to be missed

C. NEW HYBRID (C. Leoloddiglossa f. coerulea 'SVO Speckled Blue' FCC/AOS x C. Gaudii f. coerulea 'SVO Blues Fest')

Leoloddiglossa 'SVO Speckled Blue’ has excellent shape and coerulea color, it carries 20 or more well-presented flowers and there are three Cattleya species represented: leopoldii, loddigesii, and amethystoglossa. The hybrid to Gaudii (leopoldii x loddigesii) will double most of the genetic make-up making these look a lot like a super-sized Gaudii flowers but with darker blue spots.  Really nice

Cattleya Mrs. Mahler (C. bicolor f. coerulea 'SVO' x C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS)

C. The identical cross is available as SVO 7155, and the reciprocal cross is available as SVO 7156.  Either I’m getting forgetful or I really wanted to make these!

Second Release SVO 7587
Slc. NEW HYBRID (C. Chinese Bronze 'Marco Polo' x Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

Chinese Bronze (C. bicolor x Blc. Chinese Jade) was made famous by Stewart Orchids and has 4-6 very flat flowers with wide petals in an olive green with bronze overlay, combined with a bright red lip reminiscent of the bicolor parent.  Truly a memorable flower!  Katherine Clarkson (C. Mark Jones x Slc. Jungle Gem) has really nice, large yellow flowers with wide petals and red spots on a compact plant.  As plant breeders, we often test new ideas and hope for a breakthrough.  Here we are combining the flat flowers and hard substance of 'Marco Polo' with the wide petals and spots of Katherine Clarkson.  We are predicting flat, bronze to yellow/green flowers many with red spots, red lips and heavy substance.  We have high expectations for this cross.  Check out this first to bloom, picture..

C. NEW HYBRID (C. Mark Jones 'SVO' HCC/AOS x C. velutina 'SVO 24')

Mark Jones (C. Caudebec x C. Fascelis) is a full shaped flower with surprisingly wide petals for a spotted hybrid.  Upright stems carry 7-9 well-arranged flowers in a light cream color with dark amethyst spots and a broad red lip.  This velutina is perhaps the most floriferous known example of this species, carrying up to 24 flowers, more than twice the number expected from this species.  The flowers have undulated segments and are bronze-yellow with scattered burgundy spots, and the wide lip is veined dark purple.  The shape, colors and sweet fragrance make this unusual species spectacular.  This is SVO’s first cross with velutina, and we are hoping it will increase flower count.  Flowers will be spotted with the lips stippled in red.  Will this cross produce what I’m hoping for?  I can hardly wait to find out.

Mini Catts

The mini-cats are plants that will stay under 6” tall and bloom in a 3”-4” pot. It is not uncommon for mini-cats to bloom twice a year. The modern breeding has developed surprisingly nice improvements where the plants are heat tolerant, produce large flowers, have brilliant colors and superb flower shape.  There is always space for one more of these in every collection.

Pot. Pure Love (Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS x Slc. Seagulls Apricot 'Majestic')

This cross was first made by SVO in 2000 - it’s amazing to think that was 20 years ago!  I still have 3-4 cultivars from those original plants, and they have proven to be reliable growers and bloomers.  These desirable qualities motivated me to remake this cross.  This pairing also produced what I call a “High Average of Quality” - every plant that bloomed had good to excellent flower shape, color and growth habit. Truly a winning combination!  Limited Availability.  Pictures from the original cross Picture,    Picture     Picture

Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Seagulls Apricot 'Majestic' x Slc. Chili Chester 'SVO')

There a lot of Soph. coccinea genes in this cross, and the flower shape and color are going to make these look like super nice coccineas with fuller lips. The most noticeable difference will be how easily these will grow and flower. The eight other species in the background of this cross will give it good heat tolerance. If you like Soph. coccinea but can’t keep it alive, here is a good alternative.

SVO 7142
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Candy Flare 'Candy' x Pot. Cosmic Sparks 'Sweetness')

Breeding for new and unique flower colors is what we do at SVO. One of the new areas we are developing is what we’re calling “candy-striped” flowers.  These are red flowers with yellow splashed petals veined in red - the veining gives the “candy-striped” look.  Candy Flare and Cosmic Candy are some of the first crosses in breeding for these desirable candy-striped flowers.  The two parents are similar in their genetic makeup, so this cross represents line breeding and will intensify the desired qualities.  Candy Flare (Pot. Golden Circle x Slc. Mem. Trudi Marsh) has exceptionally wide and full-shaped petals in red/orange with dark red veins. Cosmic Sparks (Pot. Golden Circle x Slc. Cosmic Delite) also has a candy-striped flower with excellent shape and color.  Both parents are mini-Catts that stay under 6” tall and are easy to grow and flower.   Excellent shape, red flowers, yellow splashes with red veins on mini plants to bloom in 3” pots.

SVO 7257
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Purple Doll 'Midnight Velvet' AM/AOS x Lc. José Dias Castro 'Magnifica')

Deep purple mini-Catts are all the rage these days.  This cross is designed to produce deep purple flowers with wide full-shaped petals and large lips. Purple Doll (Slc. Pink Doll x Lc. Mini Purple) is a vibrant purple mini-Catt and José Dias Castro (C. labiata x Cattleya Lc. Sam W. Soysa) is a famous breeding plant popularized in the 1970-80’s by Armacost & Royston and Stewart Orchids. ‘Magnifica’ is compact growing with that classic Cattleya shape and lip.  It is known to impart rich color and excellent form to its progeny.  We are looking for deep purple flowers with classic Cattleya shape on small plants. Very nice!  Check out this Picture of the first one to bloom.

C. NEW HYBRID (C. Peckhaviensis 'SVO' HCC/AOS x
C. luteola 'South River')
Here is a novelty hybrid - Peckhaviensis (aclandiae x schillerana) crossed to luteola. I saw some pictures of C. Harem Girl (schilleriana x luteola) and really liked them: nice yellow-green segments with a contrasting red lip.  These will be similar in flower color, and plants will be small, perhaps under 6” tall, so this might be considered a mini-Catt.  A very interesting cross. Can you imagine how great these will look?

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Mari's Vision 'SVO' x Pot. Angel's Fantasy 'Solar Flare' FCC/AOS)

The amazing color of Mari's Vision (Lc. Mari's Song x Slc. Fire Fantasy) is deeply memorable, with its lavender sepals, red petals and bright yellow splashes. Pot. Angel's Fantasy (Slc. Fire Fantasy x Sc. Bright Angel) ‘Solar Flare’ earned an FCC/AOS, a testament to its positive attributes. This cross doubles up on the eye-catching qualities of each parent by line breeding to emphasize positive traits.  Flower colors will be outstanding, and we are expecting to see improved flower shape and flatter form as well.

Second Release SVO 7326
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Loud Nine 'SVO Best' x Pot. Higher Multiplier 'Diamond Orchids' HCC/AOS)

Red mini-Catt breeding is coming of age, and the quality of the plants today far exceeds that seen just 10 years ago.  Flowers are larger and flatter, with fuller lips, and plants are easier to grow. Loud Nine (Pot. Rubescence x Sl. Orpetii) was one of the first noteworthy crosses.  The small plant produces flowers nearly 3” across in a vibrant true red with darker burgundy lips. Then came Higher Multiplier (Pot. Rubescence x Slc. Pink Doll), with equally vibrant true red flowers 3.5” across.  From the first day I saw these two plants flower I was on a mission to breed them together.  Tremendous potential lies in the genetics being combined here.

This is a new spin on the red mini-Catt.Loud Nine (Pot. Rubescence x Sl. Orpetii) is spectacular, with small plants producing flowers nearly 3” across in a vibrant true red with darker burgundy lips. Ruby Delight (Pot. Rubescence x Slc. Cosmic Delite) has a true red flower with deep red flaring; the lip is gorgeous. This style of breeding will give about 50% flares in dark red.  All flowers will be red, have excellent shape and be large for the small plant size. The flared ones are going to be spectacular and the solid red ones too!

SVO 7328
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Sacramento Jewel 'SVO' x Sl. Minipet 'SVO')

These are going to be very small mini-Catts. At full maturity, Sacramento Jewel (Slc. Tangerine Jewel x Lc. Sacramento Rose) is barely 4” tall.  Plants have excellent vigor, bloom several times a year and have the roundest flower shape imaginable. Minipet (Sl. Orpetii x Soph. coccinea) is also just 4” tall with red flowers an amazing 3.25” across!  Easy to bloom 4” tall plants carrying 3” dark red flowers with fantastic round form.  Everybody has space for these!  Limited supply.

Second Release SVO 7330
Slc. Bella del Caribe (Slc. Angel's Fantasy 'Solar Flare' FCC/AOS x Sc. Beaufort 'Hartford's Elwood' AM/AOS)

This is such a great hybrid.  Angel's Fantasy is particularly nice.  The flowers are just spectacular, and the FCC/AOS awarded to 'Solar Flare' says a lot about flower quality.  This plant is also a vigorous grower and flowers twice a year.  Beaufort has a long history of breeding excellent mini-Catts and is one of the most important mini breeders, as it produces reliably high-quality offspring.  The flowers of this cross will have excellent round shape in yellow sunset colors, many with dark red flares.  Plants will bloom in 3” pots twice a year.  Everyone has space for one of these! First plant to bloom - super nice!  Picture

Pot. Fantasy Circle (Slc. Angel's Fantasy 'Solar Flare' FCC/AOS x Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL')

Slc. Angel's Fantasy (Slc. Fire Fantasy x Sc. Bright Angel) is just spectacular, and the FCC/AOS awarded to 'Solar Flare' indicates exceptional flower quality.  This plant is also a strong grower and flowers twice a year. Golden Circle ‘Orange Petals Red Lip’ really has orange petals and a red lip.  It blooms 3 times a year, and the flower quality is amazing. Golden Circle has proven to be a reliable breeder, producing offspring with a high average of quality.  We are expecting compact, free-flowering plants with blooms in mostly red with contrasting yellow flares and darker red lips. The potential for superior plants is very high with this grex.

SVO 7361
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Petite Purple 'SVO' x Slc. Virginia Dickey 'Diamond Orchids' AM/AOS)

Dark purple mini-Catts are hot!  This cross is going to produce flowers in deep magenta. Petite Purple (Lc. Mini Purple x Sl. Orpetii) is as the name indicates. Plants bloom well in 3” pots and the flowers are surprisingly large - 3.5” for a plant only 5” tall. I am very excited about the potential of Virginia Dickey (Slc. Pink Doll x Sl. Pole-Star)! The cultivar ‘Diamond Orchids’ is remarkable: the 5” tall plant blooms 3 times a year, and the upright stems hold 3 flowers just above the foliage. The 2.5” wide flowers are a pink-red and flat, with outstanding symmetry - these are really good-looking blooms!  This cross is going to have nicely-shaped flat flowers in deep magenta presented well on a mini-Catt plant that blooms twice a year. Spectacular!

Second Release SVO 7363
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Jillian Lee 'SVO Solid Red' x Slc. Virginia Dickey 'Diamond Orchids' AM/AOS)

Jillian Lee (Sc. Beaufort x Sl. Orpetii) has a true red flower, so intense that you can spot it across the greenhouse! Its excellent round shape and miniature plant size make this a great candidate for breeding. Virginia Dickey (Slc. Pink Doll x Sl. Pole-Star) is a 5” tall plant that blooms 3 times a year with 2.5” wide pink-red flowers that are presented well on upright stems.  The expectation is for deep, deep red flowers, well-presented on sturdy stems from mini plants that will bloom in 3” pots.  Very limited supply.

SVO 7367
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Fire Fantasy 'H&R' x Slc. Cosmic Delite 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

Flared mini-Catts are some of my favorites, but what I like even more are “candy-striped” flowers: red petals with yellow flares striped in red. Fire Fantasy (Lc. Hawaiian Fantasy x Soph. coccinea) has proven its ability to impart excellent flared petals to its offspring. Cosmic Delite (Slc.  Bright Angel x Sc. Batemaniana) is an easy blooming mini-Catt plant that’s mature in a 3” pot and carries red flowers splashed yellow with red stripes – the candy-striped parent in this cross, it.  This cross will produce miniature plants that bear large flowers, red in color with yellow splashed petals striped in red.

Second Release SVO 7368
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Jillian Lee 'SVO Solid Red' x Pot. Loud Nine 'SVO Best')

The quality now seen in red mini-Catt breeding far exceeds that of just 10 years ago.  Flowers are larger and flatter, and plants are easier to grow. Jillian Lee (Sc. Beaufort x Sl. Orpetii) has a true red flower that’s so vivid you can spot it across the greenhouse. The flower has excellent, round shape and is carried by a miniature plant. Loud Nine (Pot. Rubescence x Sl. Orpetii) is a small plant that produces flowers nearly 3” across in a vibrant true red with darker burgundy lips.  These are going to be red, red, red flowers with superb, flat, round shape on mini-plants that will start blooming in 3” pots.  Limited supply.

Second Release SVO 7403
Slc. NEW HYBRID [( L. Seagulls Tangerine x L. Seagulls)'Sunset' x Slc. Mem. Trudi Marsh 'Sun Flair']

Here is a different style of breeding.  The goal is to produce small plants with an upright habit, good stems of novel-colored flowers in red, orange and yellow.  (L. Seagulls Tangerine x L. Seagulls) has harpophylla in its background plus a strong influence of rupicolous Laelias: milleri and briegeri.  This combination results in a very compact plant with upright bulbs and strong spikes of starry-shaped flowers in orange-yellow. Mem. Trudi Marsh (Slc. Tangerine Jewel x Slc. Cosmic Delite) is a very colorful mini-Catt with lots of successful hybrids to its credit.  So…what to expect?  Mini-Catt-sized plants with compact upright bulbs that produce wiry stems with 4-5 full star-shaped flowers in a range of sunset colors. Very cute! Limited availability.

SVO 7406
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Loud Nine 'Unbeatable' x Pot. Krull's Mini-Angel 'SVO Red Fire Ball')

Deep red mini-Catts have been under development for many years at SVO. These newest crosses are bringing together advances from multiple breeding efforts to achieve the ultimate goal: classic standard-shaped red flowers with full ruffled lips. Pot. Loud Nine (Pot. Rubescence x Sl. Orpetii) has very full, round flowers in dark red with a full deeper red lip on a miniature plant. Krull's Mini-Angel (Pot. Elaine Taylor x Pot. Franklin Smith) has flat flowers with nearly perfect shape: overlapping petals in dark red with a full darker red lip.  Flowers are displayed well and the plant is compact in size.  This cross is very promising for great color, excellent shape, and well-presented flowers on a small plant.  A super nice pairing!

SVO 7434
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Ruby Delight 'SVO' x Slc. Angel Eyes 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

We have been breeding to develop “candy-striped” flowers that have petals with a central yellow area veined in red. Ruby Delight (Pot. Rubescence x Sc. Cosmic Delite) is red with darker red veins in the petals.  The flower shape is fantastic, and the plant is very compact. Angel Eyes (Slc. Bright Angel x Lc. Little Dipper) is a long-proven breeder of flared flowers, imparting great color and, importantly, flat form.  I’m very interested to see the results of this cross - tremendous potential!

SVO 7445
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. California Queen 'Red Angel' SM/JOGAx Pot. Loud Nine 'Unbeatable')

The quest for the perfect red mini-Catt is taking another important step with this cross. Pot. Loud Nine (Pot. Rubescence x Sl. Orpetii) has very full, round flowers in dark red with a full deeper red lip on a miniature plant. California Queen (Blc. Hisako Akatsuka x Slc. California Apricot) has outstanding flower shape: the bright red petals are very wide and flat, and the lip is well-formed.  These will be mini-Catts that flower in 3” pots.  Flowers will have superior shape and red color, and the lips will be darker red and ruffled.  Just fantastic!

Second Release SVO 7487
Sl. Orpetii (Sl. Orpetii 'Kathleen' AM/AOS x self)

Sl. Orpetii (L. pumila x Soph. coccinea) is one of the original mini-Catts and has produced many excellent offspring over the years.  These selfings are growing very well, which makes me particularly happy.  Shortly after sowing the seed I did the unforgivable and repotted ‘Kathleen’ at the wrong time.  I knew it was the wrong time, but I had let the plant stay too long in the same mix, and it was declining, so I thought it would be better to repot than wait for new roots to start.  Guess I needed to learn that lesson again!  The plant perished.  I believe ‘Kathleen’ was a tetraploid (4n), which makes its loss even more painful.  I am so glad the selfing produced lots of seed.  The flowers are a deep purple-red and flat, and plants are mature in a 3” pot and bloom twice a year.  A great mini-Catt.

Second Release SVO 7495
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Sierra Gem 'SVO Red Fireball' x Pot. Star Fire ‘Ruben's Red’)

Sierra Gem (Slc. Hazel Boyd x Sl. Pole-Star) is a charming grex hybridized by Alan Koch of Gold County Orchids.  The mini-Catt plant has a compact growth habit, with straight upright flower spikes displaying 4-5 pure red well-shaped flowers. Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Pot. Rubescence) ‘Ruben’s Red’ produces a strong inflorescence with 7 well-arranged flowers in a solid saturated deep red with a lip that is darker red and ruffled.  This cross will produce a mature plant size of 6-7” tall, right on the boundary between a mini-Catt and small compact-Catt.  Flowers will be well-supported and arranged.  Expect 4-6 shapely, vibrant deep red flowers with cute ruffled lips.  Plants will begin to bloom in 3” pots.

Second Release SVO 7498
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Louise Clarke 'Outstanding' x Pot. Loud Nine 'Unbeatable')

These parents will make for perfectly shaped mini-Catts.Louise Clarke (Pot. Golden Circle x Pot. Rubescence) has such a nice flower!  From a photo it’s hard to tell that the flower isn’t a standard Cattleya.  In fact, it’s 4” across on a 6” tall plant blooming in a 3” pot!!! Loud Nine (Pot. Rubescence x Sl. Orpetii) is really round and flat, and the color is pure red.  The plant is barely 5” tall, and the flowers is 3” across.  Striving for the perfect mini-Catt here!  These are going to have red flowers with darker red ruffled lips and wide flat petals.  Plants will mature at 6” tall - just fantastic!

SVO 7502
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Cosmic Candy 'SVO Sweetness' x Slc. Cosmic Angel 'Cute Flores')

This new breeding style is so colorful we’ve decided to name it “candy-striped.” This pattern occurs when red flowers with yellow splashed petals are veined red and red veining over the yellow patch that gives a candy-striped look.  These crosses are unique to SVO - you can only get them here!  Cosmic Candy (Slc. Jillian Lee x Slc. Cosmic Delite) has a deep red flower, and Cosmic Angel (Slc. Cosmic Delite x Slc. Angel Fantasy) is a bit more orange-red. Super cute!  These are mini-Catts and mature in 3” pots. The first plant has bloomed, here is the picture

SVO 7504
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Seagulls Apricot 'Choice Morsel' x Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL')

Seagulls Apricot (Slc. California Apricot x Soph. coccinea) ‘Choice Morsel’ came from the breeding collection of the late Frank Fordyce and was one of his prized breeding plants.  It has brilliant nearly neon orange-colored petals, and the flat flowers accentuate the wide petals.  Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) also was hybridized by Frank Fordyce, and its breeding reputation is well-deserved.  The cultivar ‘OPRL’has 3.5” orange flowers with red lips and superb form produced twice a year on 6” tall plants. We are hoping the intense neon orange flower color of ‘Choice Morsel’ will influence the offspring.  Excellent shape and red lips are also expected from this mini-Catt cross.

SVO 7516
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Beau's Apricot Gem 'SVO Little Giant' x Slc. Chili Chester 'Peter's')

Mini-Catts with neon orange-red flowers - pretty cool. It’s been a while since SVO has done any breeding like this. Beau's Apricot Gem (Slc. Seagulls Apricot x Sc. Beaufort) is so cute: small plants with super round bright orange flowers. Slc. Chili Chester (Sc. Chester x Slc. Red Chili) 'Peter's' has bright orange-red flowers with excellent shape and very flat presentation.  These plants will reach maturity at just 4” tall.  Flowers will have wide petals, round shape and flat form, with an intense almost neon orange-red color.

Second Release SVO 7517
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Apricot Sands 'Firebrand' AM/AOS x Pot. Loud Nine 'SVO Best')

Apricot Sands (Slc. Seagulls Apricot x Blc. John Passander) has exceptionally flat flowers with full, round red petals veined in crimson and a crimson lip with a yellow throat. The flowers of Loud Nine (Pot. Rubescence x Sl. Orpetii) are super round and flat, and the color is pure red.  Plants are barely 5” tall, and the flower is 3” across.  This is my first cross with Apricot Sands, and its lineage indicates that it should be an excellent parent.  By pairing it with the known breeding traits of Loud Nine we will surely get excellent offspring.  Flowers will be dark red and flat with wide petals and round shape.  Lips will be full and darker red, many with yellow throats.

SVO 7529
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Fantasy Circle 'First Class Flare’ x Slc. Candy Sparks 'Candy Spark')

The flowers of Fantasy Circle (Pot. Golden Circle x Slc. Angel's Fantasy) have a unique color: salmon sepals and bright yellow petals with a red picotee, and a yellow lip with red on the tip.  The shape is full and the plant is small.  Candy Sparks (Slc. Mem. Trudi Marsh x Slc. Angel's Fantasy) has a red flower splashed yellow with red veins – a very eye-catching color combination we are calling “candy-striped.”   This delightful mini-Catt also flowers twice a year.   Looking for exotic candy stripes from this cross.  I am thinking these will have salmon to red sepals and yellow petals with red veins centrally and a red picotee.  Lips will be yellow with red veins.  Mature plants should be 5” tall and flower twice a year. Sounds pretty good!

Second Release SVO 7534
Pot. Little Circle (Pot. Little Toshie 'Gold Country' AM/AOS x Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL')

Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) is one of my most reliable breeding plants, and ‘OPRL' (Orange Petals Red Lip) has superb form with 3.5” orange flowers and red lips that are produced twice a year on 6” tall plants. Little Toshie (Sc. Beaufort x Blc. Toshie Aoki) 'Gold Country' is the best cultivar of this delightful grex.  It flowers 2-3 times a year with superb, flat, bright yellow flowers and dark red lips. This cross has amazing potential!  Plants are expected to produce flowers with superior form in colors ranging from yellow to orange.  All will have contrasting full-shaped red lips.  These will start to flower in 3" pots and bloom twice a year when mature. So many of these were good, as you can see. Picture

Second Release SVO 7540
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Burana Angel 'SVO #1 Best' HCC/AOS x Slc. Angel's Fantasy 'Solar Flare' FCC/AOS)

Burana Angel (Pot. Burana Beauty x Slc. Bright Angel) produces shapely flowers with remarkable color: rich red with darker red flares and yellow at the base – a very attractive combination.  Plants are 10” tall and bloom twice a year.  Pot. Angel's Fantasy (Slc. Fire Fantasy x Sc. Bright Angel) is just spectacular, and the FCC/AOS awarded to 'Solar Flare' says a lot about flowers quality.  This is a good grower and flowers twice a year.  I can only imagine how exotic the flower colors will be.  Petals will be mostly red with yellow flares tipped in red, and the lip will be red with yellow and red veins in throat.  Compact plants will mature at 8” tall.  This cross could be named Exotic Splash! Click HERE for a picture of the first to bloom

SVO 7551
Slc. Candy Sparks (Slc. Mem. Trudi Marsh 'Sun Flair' x Slc. Angel Fantasy 'Solar Flare' FCC/AOS)

This is a remake of one of the first “candy-striped” crosses. Almost all of the Candy Sparks had red flowers with yellow splashed petals veined in red.  The red veining over the yellow splash gives this breeding line its name - “candy-striped.”  These are mini-Catts, and mature plants don’t need a pot bigger than 3”.  I am really looking forward to keeping some plants from this cross, as they have proven to be very fertile and good breeders.  These photos show some of the results from the first time this cross was made.  Picture   Picture Picture Picture

SVO 7552
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Ruby Delight 'SVO' x Pot. Louise Clarke ‘Outstanding’ )

Ruby Delight (Pot. Rubescence x Sc. Cosmic Delite) has an amazing red flower with darker red veins in the petals.  Flower shape is fantastic, and the plant is very compact.  Louise Clarke (Pot. Rubescence x Pot. Golden Circle) has a very nice flower – solid red with a ruffled red lip and yellow throat.  The flower is 4” across on a 6” tall plant that blooms in a 3” pot!!!  This cross will produce shapely red flowers.  About half will bloom with yellow flares on the petals, and a few will have the yellow flared with red veins.

SVO 7599
Sl. NEW HYBRID (Sl. Orpetii 'Hidden Treasure' 4N AM/AOS x L. speciosa 'Dark Purple Salvador')

Alright - here is a cross that is very speculative.  Orpetii (L. pumila x Soph. coccinea) is a mini-Catt with dark purple-red flowers as wide as the plant is tall.  This L. speciosa has dark purple flowers that are larger than the plant!  So how big will the flowers be?  Good question!  I am expecting 6” tall plants and 6” wide dark purple flowers, and I’m not sure what to predict for the lip.  It could be spectacular!!

SVO 7657
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Sierra Doll 'Little River' x Lc. Mini Purple 'Bonanza' AM/AOS)

Sierra Doll (C. walkeriana x Slc. Pink Doll) has been a successful dark purple mini-Catt hybrid, receiving over 15 AOS awards.  ‘Little River’ has a flat flower, with well-rounded petals and a darker purple lip.  Mini Purple ‘Bonanza’ (C. walkeriana x L. pumila) has well-shaped flat flowers in deep purple and a darker lip. Dark purple mini-Catts are in demand, and this cross promises to be spectacular, with large, flat dark purple flowers of exceptional shape on mini-Catt plants standing 6” tall and blooming in a 3” pot.

Coerulea

In Cattleyas the 'coerulea' color or 'blue' as it is referred to, is very intriguing and rare in nature. In the early years of blue breeding there were not many known species, so breeding was limited to a few possibilities. Today, we have many species and hybrids to breed with, and the quality of blue flowers has been improving rapidly. Don't miss the spotted blue crosses…These are a great addition for the discriminating collector.
For Spotted Coerulea Cattleyas see the Spotted Cattleya list.

Second Release SVO 6798
Lc. Love Knot f. coerulea (C. walkeriana f. coerulea 'Wenzel's Son' x L. sincorana f. coerulea 'SVO')

Love Knot in the coerulea color form has not been available for a long time.  I’ve wanted to remake it, but I needed a superb sincorana to do so.  ‘Wenzel’s Son’ has been in my collection for years and is a fantastic coerulea walkeriana with very flat flowers and wide petals.  To top that off, it’s easy to grow and bloom.  After much effort, I was able to select a good sincorana with excellent flower quality on a vigorous easy-to-bloom plant.  The quality of this primary hybrid should be exceptional, with very flat flowers in shades of coerulea and a dark blue lip. This is a true mini-Catt, and mature plants will be no more than 6” tall. Very limited availability.

SVO 6799t
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Love Knot f. coerulea 'SVO' HCC/AOS x C. mossiae f. coerulea 'Blue Moon Too')

Large well-formed coerulea flowers on small plants are the expectation here.  Love Knot is a small plant, only 5” tall, and blooms twice a year with 2 to 3 very flat flowers that are nearly 4” across.  It is an excellent grower and very showy.  C. mossiae f. coerulea 'Blue Moon Too' has large 6.5” flowers of good shape and color.  This plant produces 4-5 blooms on strong stems in early May.  I have high expectations for this cross.  Love Knot is known to flatten flower form, and mossiae provides flower size and is dominant for bloom period.  With this cross, we look forward to 3-4 large flowers on compact, robust plants in May.  A great and very promising cross!  These protocorms were treated with oryzalin (t), a chemical that can double the number of chromosomes.  The hope is that some of these will be tetraploids, and the ones that are will be very valuable.

SVO 7057
Lc. NEW HYBRID (C. Blue Velvet 'Surprise' SM/JOGA x Lc. Cornelia 'Floralia')

This modern blue mini-Catt cross benefits from the influence of C. walkeriana and L. pumila.  It also capitalizes on the large flower size of the standard labiate Cattleya species, C.  warneri and C. labiata, in the background of this cross. Plants will stay small, with a maximum height of 8” tall, and flowers will be large, possibly up to 5” across.  Petals and sepals will be in shades of coerulea with full darker blue lips.

SVO 7092
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Cornelia 'Floralia'x Lc. Moonlight Dream 'SVO Moonlight Kiss’ AM/AOS)

We are expecting a significant development in flared blue compact Catts with this cross.  The commanding presence of Cornelia (C. mossiae x L. pumila), with its large 5” flower and dark blue lip, is noteworthy.  Moonlight Dream (Love Knot x C. intermedia f. aquinii, coerulea) is also impressive, with dark blue flares of color splashed on the petals.  This cross will produce 50% flared and 50% solid-colored flowers.  All flowers will be coerulea with darker blue lips, produced two to a stem, and plants will not exceed 8” tall.  Very limited availability.

SVO 7110
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Love Knot 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Lc. Blue Rose 'Dark Blue')

The ancestors in this cross read like a who’s who of modern blue Cattleya breeding.  Love Knot (C. walkeriana x L. sincorana) imparts very flat flowers and color, and has given rise to many outstanding progeny.  Blue Rose (Lc. Floralia's Azul x Lc. Tahoe Rose) is a recent hybrid that produces top-quality blues with very large flowers and beautifully-formed lips on small plants.  This modern blue breeding is really exceptional!  Plants will stay under 10” tall, flowers will be 4-5” across, and the color should be outstanding.

Second Release SVO 7120
C. schilleriana f. coerulea (C. schilleriana f. coerulea ‘4x Blue Spots’ x C. schilleriana f. coerulea ‘Blue & Green’)
How rare is the coerulea form of C. schilleriana?  Super rare!  Outstanding parents used here.

C. Mrs. Mahler (C. bicolor f. coerulea 'SVO' x C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS)

SVO 7162

Pittiae.

SVO 7181

The same as SVO 7182, but the protocorms were treated with oryzalin (t), a chemical that can double the number of chromosomes.  The hope is that some of these will be highly desirable tetraploids.

SVO 7184
C. Laura Newton f. coerulea (C. Interglossa f. coerulea ‘SVO Blue Splash' x C. Leoloddiglossa f. coerulea 'SVO Speckled Blue' FCC/AOS)

Second Release SVO 7261
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Lake Tahoe 'Blue Lake' HCC/AOS x Lc. Ellery Tomaszkiewicz 'SVO Blue Star' AM/AOS)

At SVO we are always looking for the ideal cross that grows well and blooms well with excellent shape and color.  Our blue breeding is coming along very nicely, and progress is being made in all of these areas.  Lc. Lake Tahoe (Lc. Floralia's Azul x L. sincorana) came from Alan Koch at Gold Country Orchids.  It’s a mini plant with large, flat, blue flowers that blooms reliably twice a year. Ellery Tomaszkiewicz (Lc. Love Knot x C. warneri) is an excellent cross, with large flower size and good flower count from C. warneri and small plant size with flat flowers from Lc. Love Knot.  This grex will have coerulea color, and the 3-4 flowers will be flat, well-shaped, and presented nicely on good stems.  Flowers will be large in relation to plant size, and I expect twice-a-year blooming.

SVO 7269
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Floralia's Azul 'Sandra' AM/AOS x Lc. Ellery Tomaszkiewicz 'SVO Blue Star' AM/AOS)

Floralia's Azul (Lc. Mem. Jack Hayden x Cattleya walkeriana) has proven itself to be an important breeder of blues.  Its fine shape and color, and free-flowering traits are its strong points.  Ellery Tomaszkiewicz (Lc. Love Knot x C. warneri) is an excellent cross, with large flower size and good flower count from C. warneri and small plant size with flat flowers from Lc. Love Knot.  These are going to have big flowers up to 4.5” across on plants only 7-8” tall.  Flower color will be coerulea, with broad lips in darker blue.  A super nice blue cross!

Second Release SVO 7369
Lc. Millie Perner (L. anceps f. veitchiana 'Elizabeth’s Eyes’ AM/AOS x Lc. Love Knot f. coerulea 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

Considered to be one of the best of the veitchiana cultivars, L. anceps ‘Elizabeth’s Eyes’ has excellent color and form, and is a robust grower.  Love Knot (C. walkeriana x L. sincorana) has flat flowers, great color and blooms twice a year, all on a plant 6” tall!  These will bloom with 3-4, flat, coerulea flowers on 12-16” long stems.  Expect lots of charm from the L. anceps. Picture Check it out, this is the first to bloom!

SVO 7478
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Cornelis’ Love 'SVO' AM/AOS x Lc. Indigo Sky 'Dark Blue Lip')

Compact coerulea breeding is developing quite nicely, and this cross brings together several important traits like large flower size and a compact plant only 7-8” tall.  Flower colors will be coerulea with dark blue lips and a yellow throat, which really sets off the lip color.  This grex combines Cornelis’ Love (Lc. Cornelia x Lc.  Love Knot) and Indigo Sky (Lc. Gaskell-Pumila x Indigo Dawn).  This should be a fantastic cross.  Expect 6” flowers on an 8” tall plant – now that’s what I’m talking about!

SVO 7492
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Cariad's Mini-Quinee ‘Angel Kiss #5’ x Lc. Sarah Sears 'Big Blue Sky')
Cariad’s Mini-Quinee (Lc. Mini Purple x C. intermedia) was one of the first notable blue flared mini-Catts, and it was cloned and widely distributed.  The cultivar ‘Angel Kiss #5’ is a clonal mutation with higher quality flowers.  Lc. Sarah Sears (Lc. Cornelia x Lc. Indigo Dawn) has large fragrant coerulea flowers, and the well-formed lip is dark blue with a yellow throat.  Many of these will be flared with dark blue splashes, and the good ones will be spectacular.  All will have large flowers on small plants.  Getting several will improve the odds of finding a flared one.

SVO 7503
Lc. Mini Purple f. coerulea (Lc. Mini Purple f. coerulea 'H&R' 4n x self)

This Mini Purple (C. walkeriana x L. pumila) is a tetraploid mutation from a large group of clones flowered in Japan.  It was a real standout, with heavier substance and larger flowers with wider segments.  Selfing a 4n will produce almost 100% 4n offspring, and the overall quality will be exceptional.  This is a rare opportunity.

Second Release SVO 7527t

Second Release SVO 7546

Pittiae.

Second Release SVO 7546t
C. NEW HYBRID (C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS x C. Pittiae f. coerulea 'SVO Best Blue')

Second Release SVO 7548t
C. NEW HYBRID (C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS x C. Gaudii f. coerulea 'Harold Koopowitz')

SVO 7559

Check out the PICTURE   This makes us happy!

Second Release SVO 7567t
C. NEW HYBRID (C. Leoloddiglossa f. coerulea 'SVO Speckled Blue' FCC/AOS x C. Gaudii f. coerulea 'SVO Blues Fest')

Leoloddiglossa has been a remarkable hybrid, with a lineage that includes three Cattleya species: leopoldii, loddigesii, and amethystoglossa.  'SVO Speckled Blue’ has excellent shape and color, and carries 20 or more well-presented flowers.  Crossing this with Gaudii (leopoldii x loddigesii) will reinforce the traits of leopoldii and loddigesii, making these look like super Gaudii’s with larger flowers, deep color and darker spots.  These protocorms were treated with oryzalin (t), a chemical that can double the number of chromosomes.  The hope is that some of these will be highly desirable tetraploids.

Second Release SVO 7578
Cattleya Mrs. Mahler (C. bicolor f. coerulea 'SVO' x C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS)

C. The identical cross is available as SVO 7155, and the reciprocal cross is available as SVO 7156.  Either I’m getting forgetful or I really wanted to make these!

SVO 7617
Lc. Mini Love f. coerulea (Lc. Love Knot f. coerulea 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Lc. Mini Purple f. coerulea 'H&R' 4n)

This is a first rate coerulea mini-Catt hybrid!  Both parents have C. walkeriana in them, combined with sincorana and pumila, respectively.  These species will assure coerulea-colored flowers with wide flat petals and dark coerulea lips on plants maturing at 6” tall and blooming in 3” pots.  A truly superior coerulea mini-Catt!

Species

Collecting select and awarded Cattleya species has been a passion of mine for many years. The collection now contains over 700 selected plants!  Recently, I started breeding the “best of the best” in an effort to provide these superior and often hard to find Cattleya species available for the hobbyist.

SVO 6196
C. warscewiczii (C. warscewiczii 'Halo' AM/AOS x C. warscewiczii 'Michael' AM/AOS)

'Halo' is a strong-growing plant that produces 4-5 flowers of excellent size with nicely balanced petal shape.  'Michael' has great form, with large 7.5” flowers, and it grows well as its root system is more robust and resilient than many of the plants in this species. These are growing well, I’m expect sturdy stems with 4-5 large well-shaped lavender flowers and full-formed lips with two yellow 'eyes' in the throat. This is a 'top' modern offering of this desirable species.

SVO 6398t
C. dowiana f. aurea (C. dowiana f. aurea 'Claire' x self)

These are not easy to produce and have been a long time coming.  Here are some tips to improving your success with this species.  Plants produce new roots after the new pseudobulb matures.  If the plant is blooming size, the new roots will develop from the recently-flowered pseudobulb a few weeks after it blooms in summer.  If the plant is a seedling or nearing maturity, the new roots will emerge from the recently-matured growth.  This is the time to repot.  New roots produced during the late summer and fall have to stay healthy through winter and spring, as these roots will support the new growths and flowers the following year.  Plants rest in winter, and the root system should be kept drier during the winter months.  During the winter maintain 75-80-degree days and 65-70-degree nights with at least 50% humidity.  In late spring, once the new growth is about half developed, irrigation frequency can be increased.  These protocorms were treated with oryzalin (t), a chemical that can double the number of chromosomes.  The hope is that some of these will be tetraploids, and those that are will be very valuable.

SVO 6854
C. violacea f. semi alba flamea (C. violacea f. semi alba flamea 'SVO Splash' x C. violacea f. semi alba flamea 'Icabaru' AM/AOS)

Just about the most beautiful color form of C. violacea, these will have pure white flowers with bold magenta flares on the petals and a bright magenta lip.  In the past, these have been very expensive.  Call me crazy, but I believe that orchids should be affordable.  C. violacea likes drier conditions and warm nights during the winter, with 60-65 degrees as the minimum for best results.  Nice, vigorous plants.

SVO 6923
C. amethystoglossa 4n (C. amethystoglossa 'SVO' 4n x self)

This is an especially nice cultivar!  The petal width is impressive, resulting in flowers with a very full shape.  The color of the lip is a dark amethyst that wraps completely around, giving it an ‘orlata’ look not often seen in this species but very attractive and distinctive.  This plant is a tetraploid, and a selfing will produce tetraploid offspring. Tall-growing plants that flower in March.

SVO 7038
C. aclandiae f. alba (C. aclandiae f. alba 'SVO' AM/AOS x self)

I could not have a species cattleya collection without C. aclandiae.  Recently, some of the rare color forms have become available, and of course I had to have those too.  Yes, I know I’m afflicted with the same passion you are.  The alba color form of C. aclandiae is very rare in cultivation, and only a few plants were ever found in the wild.  As a result, they have been prohibitively expensive, but we’re going to change that.  This is the only AM/AOS awarded to C. aclandiae f. alba.  Flower size and shape are outstanding, and the plant blooms twice a year.  This is really good and not to be missed!  Also available as SVO 7357.

Second Release SVO 7039
C. aclandiae f. coerulea (C. aclandiae f. coerulea 'Blue Sky' HCC/AOS x self)

Unusual color forms of C. aclandiae are quite rare, and the coerulea form is no exception.  This is a special opportunity to acquire an exceptionally fine and very rare color form of this species.

Second Release SVO 7120
C. schilleriana f. coerulea (C. schilleriana f. coerulea ‘4x Blue Spots’ x C. schilleriana f. coerulea ‘Blue & Green’)

How rare is the coerulea form of C. schilleriana?  Super rare!  Outstanding parents used here.

SVO 7150
C. leopoldii (C. leopoldii 'Paul' AM/AOS x C. leopoldii 'SVO Dark Wonder' 4n)

I have been collecting and growing leopoldii for at least 25 years, and during that time I have flowered many plants in every conceivable color form: tipo, alba, semi-alba, coerulea, no spots, flamea, peloric and even one plant with 52 flowers, the most anyone I know of has heard of.  I have decided to begin breeding these superior plants and making the next generation available more widely.  ‘Paul’ has classic form and color, and the AM/AOS speaks to its quality. ‘SVO Dark Wonder’ is exceptional.  Expect full-shaped flowers with very heavy substance.

Second Release SVO 7157
C. leopoldii f. coerulea (C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS x self)

The coerulea color form of C. leopoldii is quite rare, and relatively few plants of this color form have been found in the wild.  ‘Kathleen’ is a robust plant and reliably produces 13-15 flowers with excellent color in late June and July.  These plants have been very pricey in the past, but we believe orchids should be affordable.

C. warscewiczii (C. warscewiczii 'Stuart's Meteor' x C. warscewiczii 'Michael' AM/AOS)

This has to be my favorite labiate Cattleya species: tall plants, huge flowers, and beautiful lips – what more could a grower want?  I have been carefully collecting these for years and selecting the best quality flowers and plants for vigor, an important consideration with warscewiczii, as they are a bit slow to mature.  'Stuart’s Meteor’ is the very select plant from Stewart Orchids, it is a strong-growing plant producing 5-6 blooms per stem.  'Michael' has great form with large 7.5” flowers and grows well; its roots and root system appear to be a bit more robust, too.  These plants are growing well, and I expect good stems holding 4-7 large lavender flowers, with full-formed lips and two yellow 'eyes' in the throat.  This desirable Cattleya species is not often seen for sale and can be very expensive when available.

C. bicolor(C. bicolor ‘SVO Big Beauty’ x C. bicolor ‘SVO Hot Chocolate’)

There are few Cattleyas as spectacular as C. bicolor when in full bloom. ‘SVO Big Beauty’ is a very large flower, it’s excellent shape and color make it very beautiful. ‘SVO Hot Chocolate’ has such a rich color, the fuchsia lip is spectacular and with 12 flowers per spike makes this a very nice plant.  I have been collecting, selecting and evaluating this species for years, these two cultivars have passed the rigorous testing required to become a breeding plant.  These will be tall plants, up to 2’ tall with 7-9 flowers held 12-16” above that!  Yes, they are tall growing, but well worth the effort. These flowers will be large and flat in a range of rich chocolate colors with bright contrasting flat fuchsia lips. Spectacular.   Unfortunately, we have a limited supply.

The same as SVO 7357, but the protocorms were treated with oryzalin (t), a chemical that can double the number of chromosomes.  The hope is that some of these will be tetraploids, and those that are will be very valuable.

SVO 7444
C. aurantiaca f. punctata (C. aurantiaca 'Mishima Spots' x self)

‘Mishima Spots’ is the original spotted form of this C. aurantiaca.  It is a very unusual color form, with orange flowers spotted in red.  The 12-15 flowers are presented in a cluster just above the foliage.  This is a very special variety and highly collectable.

L. anceps (L. anceps f. alba 'Malvern' x L. anceps 'Disciplinata' HCC/AOS)

While on a speaking tour in Mexico I heard about an amazing cross.  As the story goes, there was a cross made between L. anceps f. alba and ‘Disciplinata’, and the offspring came out white with purple flecks!  That sounded so amazing I made the cross myself, and here it is.

Standard

These standard size Cattleyas will mature at 12” to 24” tall. They possess the similar growth habit of “Compact Cattleyas”, just taller. These are bred to have strong stems caring 5 or more flowers and will be very impressive when blooming at mature size. These make excellent display plants for orchid shows and most will bloom during the spring show season.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Lc. Trick or Trick 'SVO' 4n )

The vibrant orange-yellow flower of Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) and the clusters of 8-9 flowers make this one of my favorite March bloomers.  Developing orchids that flower throughout the year is an important goal of our breeding program these days.  The equally important Trick or Treat (L. Icarus x Lc. Chit Chat) produces amazing heads of 15 or more starry orange flowers on vigorous plants.  This cross is going to deliver big clusters of orange flowers at a time of year when it will be unexpected – early January!

SVO 7186
Lc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Plum Lulu 'Hot Lips' AM/AOSx Lc. Allen Condo 'SVO' AM/AOS)

It’s been a while since we’ve offered very large growing cattleyas.  These plants mature at 2’ tall producing huge heads of large, fragrant, bronze flowers with red lips - truly spectacular!  Plum Lulu (Maui Plum x Lulu) produces magnificent heads of 12 deep purple-bronze flowers that are 4” across.  Plants of Allen Condo (Lc. Summerland Girl x C. Mrs. Mahler) stand over 2’ tall and are very robust.  The 4 ½” fragrant flowers are produced on very strong stems in big clusters of 11 or more.  Flowers are rich bronze in color with bright red lips, making an amazing display.  These will be tremendous plants standing 2‘ tall with strong upright inflorescences carrying, large, fragrant, well-presented flowers in bronze tones with red lips.  If you have the space (and if you don’t you should make some!), these plants will be true show stoppers - the “talk of the town.”   I don’t make this type of hybrid very often, so if you’ve ever wanted a truly spectacular large-growing plant, this is it.

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Picotee Passion 'SVO' AM/AOS x Lc. Bryan Wheeler 'Grandson' AM/AOS)

What a beautiful flower Picotee Passion (Blc. Horizon Flight x L. anceps) has!  The soft color, light yellow splash and lavender picotee are so nice.  Check out the Picture 4064.  The 5-7 flowers are produced above the foliage on sturdy stems.  Bryan Wheeler (Lc. Irene Finney x Lc. Harold Carlson) has impressive blooms: 4 large rose-lavender flowers splashed dark purple with a full ruffled dark purple lip.  Flowers are presented beautifully on a robust 15” inflorescence.  This cross is going to have excellent flower presentation with sturdy stems about 12” long displaying 4-5 large blooms.  Flowers will be full-shaped in lavender-rose with varied amounts of flaring and full ruffled lips.  This is a great combination, and the plants are very robust.

Pot.ChocoBerry Fondue (Pot. Ryo Iwata 'Leucadia' HCC/AOS x C. Chocolate Drop 'SVO' AM/AOS)

When we first made ChocoBerry Fondue we were a bit uncertain how this pairing would work.  That uncertainty vanished quickly when the first plants began to bloom.  Plants carry spectacular waxy red flowers with heavy substance and a spicy fragrance in August and September.  When matured the upright stems carry 7-9 flowers – really fantastic!  It took a while, but finally we are able to offer an exact remake of the original cross.  This is an example of the 2nd flowering from the first cross Picture 4496  Also available as SVO 7448. I was so intent on making this again that I did it twice!

Naranja en Flor    (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #1')

The name of this grex, Naranja en Flor, is Spanish for “Orange in Flower.”  I was so excited by the potential that I made this cross twice this year!  Over the years, I have been impressed by the breeding qualities of both Trick or Treat and Spring Fires.  I am so confident that these will turn out great, I'll bet money!  And I'm not a gambling man…  These will have strong stems holding 10-15 or more starry orange to red flowers above the foliage in March.  Mature plants will be 14-16” tall and produce a spectacular display.  How's that for confidence in a prediction?  The reciprocal is available as SVO 7486.

Trick or Treat is a great parent for clusters of orange flowers.  It is a vigorous grower, bloom reliably in March.  Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Chinese Bronze 'Marco Polo' x Lc. Summerland Girl 'Orchidglade')

Some of my favorite cattleyas are the tall-growing bifoliates, and I've made an effort to acquire many choice plants.  Over the past few years I’ve noticed that there’’s been little breeding along these lines, so, since they're some of my favorites, I made a few crosses to share with all you Cattleya lovers! Chinese Bronze (C. bicolor x Blc. Chinese Jade) has very flat flowers in green with a bronze overlay and a cool-looking tongue-shaped red lip.  Summerland Girl (C. leopoldii x C. Grandee) is a very special plant.  One of its parents is a prominent grex in the history of Cattleya breeding from the 1950's and 60's: Lc. Grandee (Lc. Mrs. Medo x C. Aeneas).  This influential hybrid is made up of three species: C. dowiana 75%, L. tenebrosa 12.5%, and C. bicolor 12.5%.  Summerland Girl flowers with an astonishing 21 large, waxy, bright red flowers with contrasting purple-red lips.  The plant is 2' tall and, when in bloom, the inflorescence adds an extra foot - truly spectacular!  These plants will be 18-24” tall carrying 10 or more large flat flowers in deep bronze to burgundy with bright red lips.  Flowers will be held high on strong upright stems, producing a very impressive display on plants that bloom in the heat of summer.
