(Ctsm. Portagee Star 'Brian Lawson's Sunrise' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. Dentigrianum 'SVO Excellence')
There have been many successful hybrids from Ctsm. Portagee Star (Ctsm. pileatum x Ctsm. Black Knight). It breeds offspring with large, flat lips and very full overall shape. One of its best hybrids, Ctsm. Chuck Taylor (Ctsm. Portagee Star x Ctsm. denticulatum), is very similar to this one. Ctsm. Dentigrianum (denticulatum x tigrinum) was a breakthrough in mini-Catasetum breeding. What this primary hybrid lacks in genealogical complexity it makes up for in charm, with beautifully formed flowers in white, uniformly spotted with burgundy, and a soft yellow lip with a dentate margin. This cross will make compact plants that should bloom 2-3 times per season, and the flower colors will range from yellow to darkly spotted.

The cultivar name for this rare color form of Ctsm. pileatum v. imperiale was given to honor Pierre Couret, one of the founders of the Venezuela Orchid Society in Caracas. He sent a division of this plant to Marcel Lecoufle in France to be meristemed, and thus this rare color form is available for others to enjoy. Here we have selfed it. The expectation is for many to have red flowers, but we know that some will be pink, and a few may be white.

Dark Odyssey (Karen Armstrong x Darkness) produces large flowers for the plant size, perfectly arranged, in yellow with burgundy spots. Ctsm. Extravaganza (Karen Armstrong x Louise Clarke) has surprisingly large flowers for the plant size, with excellent shape and a rich burgundy color. We first offered this very successful hybrid in 2015, and we've been wanting to re-make it ever since. It's been eight years since the same parents bloomed, with Ctsm. Penang as a female and Ctsm. Chuck Taylor as a male! Sometimes, breeding plants with separate male and female flowers can require great patience, but it finally happened! Ctsm. Penang (Ctsm. Susan Fuchs x Ctsm. pileatum) is responsible for producing some very successful mini-Catasetum hybrids. We predicted that crossing it with Ctsm. Chuck Taylor (Portagee Star x denticulatum) would give excellent result, and the first batch of Ctsm. Dreamboats confirmed our expectations. Ctsm. Penang 'Sweetheart' can bloom with more than 20 large red flowers, and Chuck Taylor has beautiful flower color and blooms 2-3 times each season. With this hybrid, we expect large flower size with only a modest increase in plant size. The flowers will have wide, full lips and bloom 2-3 times a season, with flowers that will range from burgundy with yellow lips to deeply spotted, and every color in between. This is a very robust growing cross with superior vigor. We didn't want to take any chances, so we pollinated two female flowers on Penang 'Sweetheart'. Clo. Black Jade is a primary hybrid of Cl. russelliana and Ctsm. expansum. Its name is deceptive, as the flower color is dark green with a prominent black blotch in the center of the lip. Up to 25 large flowers are produced on long inflorescences. When in bloom, the rare combination of flower color and a huge inflorescence is incredibly impressive. With this hybrid, we have backcrossed Black Jade to the outstanding Ctsm. expansum 'SVO Front Runner', which has impressive flower quality, huge, flat lips, and 18 flowers per stem! The goals of this cross are threefold: 1) improve lip shape and flower size, 2) produce 18-25 flowers on cascading inflorescences, and 3) reinforce green flower color with a contrasting dark callus on the lip. These have tremendous potential for spectacular flowering! And, as a bonus, the Clowesia influence should result in flower longevity of 3 weeks or more.

Ctsm. expansum 'Flat Lip' earns the cultivar name from its beautiful, super flat lip. Each inflorescence produces 12-14 well arranged flowers. The expectation for this hybrid is long cascading inflorescences of 20 or more flowers in colors ranging from green to yellow and rose. Some will be spotted. Good flower life is expected with this type of breeding using a Clowesia parent.

The huge, flat, nearly black lip of the cultivar 'Ursa Major' really impressed the judges, and the FCC/AOS says a lot about its qualities. Ctsm. Ryan Harrington (Ctsm. tenebrosum x Ctsm. denticulatum) has been an excellent hybrid, with 'Best of the Best' edging out all the others with its dark color and remarkable flowering abilities. All my original plants were imported, and as luck would have it they flowered in a wide range of colors, including red, amber, yellow, green and white. The variety is amazing! The arching inflorescences are very sturdy, carrying many well-displayed flowers. The cultivar 'Red 48' has red flowers and carries up to 48 blooms on a single inflorescence!

Previous iterations of Spotted Hornet have already received multiple AM/AOS and an FCC/AOS! Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO Jumbo Swan' has fantastic flower quality, while Morm. Exotic Treat (sinuata x tuxtlensis) 'SVo Orange' has amazing color. This hybrid set the standard of quality in Cycnoches breeding several years ago. Its superbly shaped flowers are produced on long cascading inflorescences of 14-16 blooms. The flowers have perfect shape, and even in our greenhouse, surrounded by numerous Catasetinae, these are very impressive. The flowers come in a range of rich colors, including burgundy, bronze, and green, and many will have darker burgundy spotting. Morm. andreettae has large, eye-catching coral-peach-colored flowers with strong upright inflorescences displaying 12 nicely arranged flowers well above the foliage. This is an impressive species with a unique flower color. Morm. badia is the easiest Mormodes species to grow and comes in several color forms ranging from yellow to orange to red. In this cross, we used a bright yellow color form with upright inflorescences carrying more than 30 well-arranged flowers. This is breeding for a hybrid with solid orange/yellow flowers, a new combination for this genus. Its wide petals and large flower size caught our attention, and it was moved into our breeding program. Morm. Exhibitors of Louise Clarke so far have earned 11 AOS awards with 6 being AM/AOS - an impressive result for any hybrid. The flowers of this grex have large dramatic lips in colors ranging from solid red to yellow with dark spots, and a few almost solid yellow. High flower count is also a great feature of this cross, which typically holds 12 -16 well-arranged blooms. This is an excellent grex! Plants bloom 3-4 times a season, and the large flowers have huge lips in a range of amazing colors.

This is our first opportunity to offer the 'classic' color form of Ctsm. pileatum. We have patiently waited for years (something like 10 years) to have 'KG's El Supremo' flower as a female. It is one of the best examples of the species, grown by and awarded to the late Greg Allikas, an amazing photographer, ambassador of orchids, and a dear friend. Ctsm. pileatum 'Dinner Plate' has excellent flower size, and the shape and size of the lip remind me of a dinner plate. Okay, perhaps a slight exaggeration, but at least a saucer! In the 20+ years since I first acquired it, this plant had never flowered female for me. Finally, 3 years ago, everything lined up, and we got both male and female flowers on both parents, the two best standard-colored Ctsm. pileatums in my collection, and we were able to make this long awaited cross. I'm excited to see these flower!

This time we used the primary hybrid Morm. Exotic Treat (sinuata x tuxtlensis), which has amazing color, with bright orange-yellow flowers and bold burgundy spotting. Its flowers are large and well-presented from 3-4 upright inflorescences on each bulb. Ctsm. denticulatum 'SVO II' is the same plant used in breeding Ctmds. We are very happy with Clo. Cheryl Erins (Cl. russelliana x Ctsm. tigrinum): the flowers are pure white with dark pink speckling, and it is very, very floriferous! It's been a surprisingly good parent, too – it's quite fertile and produces capsules easy. The flower color and shape of Ctsm. Dentigrianum (Ctsm. tigrinum x Ctsm. denticulatum) are just beautiful: burgundy spots on a white background with a yellow lip. Combine the flower quality with 20 blooms per inflorescence 3 times a year and you have a great hybrid and an exciting parent. This combination is all about breeding for white flowers with spots and yellow lip color. But wait, there's more! Also expect 2-3 inflorescences per bulb with 20 flowers each! The full-shaped flowers will have wide, flat petals and an impressive flower longevity of 3 weeks on a mini-Catasetum plant!

Ctsm. Dentigrianum (denticulatum x tigrinum) is a breakthrough in mini-Catasetum breeding. It's a primary hybrid with considerable charm. The flowers have excellent shape and color, and the plant blooms reliably several times per season. Back-crossing to denticulatum should accentuate the color and shape, and we're hoping for improved flower count: 'Dark Spots 42' blooms with 42 flowers on an inflorescence! This is an unusually high flower count for a Ctsm. Dentigrianum, almost double what we normally would expect. This is a floriferous mini-Catasetum that will bloom 2-3 times a season.

We've offered Catasetum tigrinum seedlings previously, but not very often, and this is still a very rare species in the USA.

This represents the third generation of denticulatum line breeding. These two parents are standouts: they matured quickly from flask, bloom several times a year, and have excellent flower quality. This is a mini-Catasetum, with mature plants only 5” tall. I've been trying to produce these again for several years, and it's taken longer than expected. As you know, it takes both male and female flowers to produce a capsule, and female Ctsm. denticulatum flowers aren't produced every year.Ctsm. denticulatum likes to stay warm in winter, with minimum temperatures of 60-65 F and humidity at 50% or higher. Better get these now - who knows when one will flower female again. It has been five years since we had these available, and it might be another five before we have them again. Also see SVO 10607.

The hybrid Ctsm. Diana's Dots (Ctsm. Orchidglade x Ctsm. tigrinum) combines the large flower size of Ctsm. Orchidglade and superior shape of tigrinum. It has the best-shaped pure Catasetum flowers in our entire collection. Check out the photo: fantastic full petals and sepals, and stunning shape. The flowers of Ctsm. Dentigrianum (denticulatum x tigrinum) have excellent shape imparted by the tigrinum and dark spotting from denticulatum. Both parents flower 2-3 times a season with 15-25 flowers. This hybrid is doubling up on the good flower shape imparted by the tigrinum grandparent. Most flowers will be light yellow with a peppering of spots, and some will be covered with bold burgundy blotches. Easy to grow and flower.

Our Cycnoches breeding is 'State of the Art', with exciting and increasingly complex hybrids consistently being developed. This new hybrid will test the limits of size, shape, and color. The large flowers of Cyc. Jumbo Cooper (Cyc. warscewiczii x Cyc. cooperi) are green and produced 16-18 per inflorescence, making an impressive cascade of swan-shaped blooms. Although the expectation here is for green colors, some came out rich bronze like 'SVO Bronze'. Cyc. Melana's Swan (Cyc. warscewiczii x Cyc. Dark Swan) has dark petals, boldly spotted sepals, and white lips – very impressive! The 10 large flowers per inflorescence make a spectacular display. Here we expect a stunning cascade of 12-15 large flowers in rich bronze colors with bold and often coalescing dark spots. Amazing!

Cl. Grace Dunn is a fantastic hybrid, and we have waited patiently until we could use the best possible cultivars of the two parent species to remake this cross. Cl. Grace Dunn blooms in mid-winter on leafless plants with multiple pendent inflorescences that cascade over the side of the pot and carry 15 or more pink and green flowers with cute frilly lips. This cultivar of Chloroge (Cyc. chlorochilon x Cyc. loddigesii) allows for the color pigments to suffuse over the surface of the flower segments, an unusual attribute in breeding Cycnoches. This is an impressive species: the small plants produce a tightly clustered inflorescence of 40 or more amazing spotted purple flowers that are perfectly arranged. Morm. Jumbo Bacia has a solid red flower with a bright red lip and impressive flower production. I have seen these bloom with 37 flowers on a single inflorescence! Mo. Painted Desert (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Morm. sinuata) is the parent of the world-famous Fdk. After Dark. The influence of Mormodia (Mo.) in breeding is well known: it conveys flower color, multiple pendulous inflorescences, and flower longevity to its offspring. Ctsm. ivaneae 'Purple Fantasy' is an amazing species: the dense clusters of 40 perfectly arranged flowers are truly spectacular. This pairing makes the hybrid genus Fredclarkeara (Fdk.). One of the unique attributes of Fdk. hybrids is the flower longevity: expect flowers to last 4 weeks or more! Painted Desert is dominant for flower color, and ivaneae will add its dark coloration and spotting. It's too early to know whether some will be black, but I expect deep burgundy colors, boldly spotted in nearly black!

This year we're offering just one Mormodia (Mormodes x Clowesia). Grace Dunn (Cl. warczewitzii x Cl. rosea) produces 15+ pink and green fragrant flowers with cute frilly lips on each of 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid-winter. We know that Mormodes are often dominant for color transmission, and we are hoping that Morm. Aftermath (Mark Mills x Midnight Hooker) with its orange color and bold red spotting will transfer these qualities to the next generation. This cross will bloom late in the year, with cascading inflorescences carrying 12-16 flowers in shades of orange with spots. The elusive black swan is one in a million, and with this hybrid, the odds are getting better to achieve this dream. Cyc. Jean E. Monnier (Cyc. barthiorum x Cyc. cooperi) 'Dark Swan' is a one of just a few from this grex that had flowers with a solid dark chocolate color. It produces 30 flowers on each inflorescence! Cyc. Dark Swan (Cyc. Richard Brandon x Cyc. Chloroge) showed us the potential to develop dark, nearly black Cycnoches flowers. If the plants from this grex produce flowers with a base color from the Cyc. Jean E. Monnier parent and the coalescing dark spots of Cyc. Dark Swan, this just might be the hybrid to deliver black swans! Or at least dark burgundy swans.

This is a well-known but rarely available small-growing Clowesia species. Its natural habitat is along the slopes facing the Pacific Ocean in the Mexican states of Michoacán and Oaxaca. This species flowers in early winter on deciduous leafless bulbs that produce 3-4 pendulous inflorescences carrying 15 or more soft pink flowers with cute frilly lips. Cl. rosea 'Collected' is truly an outstanding cultivar, and Cl. rosea 'Line Bred' is from the last batch we made at SVO, showing remarkable plant vigor and floriferousness. Orchidglade) 'SVO' has good color and shape, and the Ctsm. Dagny (Ctsm. pileatum x Ctsm. Brent's Black Hawk) blooms with 26 large, well-arranged flowers on a long, gracefully arching inflorescence. We expect this cross to deliver 20-25 dark red to nearly black flowers with darker, broad flat lips, well-arranged on arching inflorescences. And they will have long-lasting flowers. This hybrid was in my collection in the early 1990's. I had one plant with icy green flowers and the other with pure white blooms. I'm not sure what happened to those plants, but after all these years I haven't forgotten about them. When both parents of Clo. White Magic were in flower, I had to re-make this cross. Cl. warczewitzii has a small, light green flower with darker green stripes. Plants bloom in early winter, and the flowers have a pleasant lemony scent. Ctsm. Orchidglade (pileatum x expansum) 'Davie Ranches' has a large flower in light yellow with scattered red spots and a huge lip; it's one of our most important breeding plants. We expect full-shaped flowers in light green to white, and a few may be spotted as well. Clowesetums have many good traits: multiple inflorescences per bulb and long-lived flowers with good form and a pleasant fragrance. Since the development of Fredclarkeara After Dark we have not had a breakthrough in breeding as big as the new Catamodes (Ctmds.) hybrids listed below.
This new direction started with a cross now named Catamodes Dragons Tail (Morm. lawrenceana x Ctsm. denticulatum). The flowers were small, with amazing color, reminding me of the scales of a mythical dragon. At first, I was reluctant to use it in breeding, as the plant was large and not proportional to the size of the flowers. That said, the way to a breakthrough is to try something new. I made two test crosses: Ctmds. Dragons Glade (Ctmds. Dragons Tail x Ctsm. Orchidglade) and Ctmds. Darkonium (Ctmds. Dragons Tail x Ctsm. John C. Burchett). To my delight, the qualities of the resulting offspring were far beyond the previous scope of Catasetinae breeding. Flower colors ranged from black to spotted to purple to yellow; all had broad, flat lips; flowers lasted an impressive 3-4 weeks; and each inflorescence carried 15 or more large, well-arranged flowers. When the plants matured, they started blooming in July and continued to produce new flowers throughout the growing season into winter. Mature plants flower 4-5 times a year and are in nearly continuous bloom for 5-6 months!
Since the first two Ctmds. hybrids were test crosses, I didn't offer many plants for sale. Of the few that were sold, seven Ctmds. Dragons Glade received AM/AOS awards, and one Ctmds. Darkonium received top honors with an FCC/AOS. I quickly (of course, “quickly” is a relative term in orchid breeding) started making more crosses along these new breeding lines. It's four years later, and the next batch is now available for sale.

Orchidglade (pileatum x expansum) 'Davie Ranches' is an excellent breeder and a prolific bloomer, bearing large, light-yellow flowers with red spots and a huge lip. How can Ctmds.
