SVO 10997
(C. Penny Kuroda 'Spots' AM/AOS x Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'Solar Spots' HCC/AOS)
This new breeding direction combines spotted and flared Catts! Penny Kuroda 'Spots' is one of the first important cattleya hybrids with flared petals, and spotted sepals. It was cloned and widely distributed. We have had our plant for probably 25 years! It's a tall grower with heads of 12-14 flowers. Very impressive. Katherine Clarkson (C. Mark Jones x Slc. Jungle Gem) was the first grex to have 3-4, large, shapely yellow flowers with bold red spots on a compact plant that flowers twice a year! The big question here is, how dominant will the Penny Kuroda flaring be? We are hoping for well-rounded yellow flowers with bold spotting, and red lips. Looking forward to many plants having flowers with red flares on the petals and heads of 5-7 blooms! All lofty goals. We believe in this cross.

(Bc. Little Mermaid 'Janet' AM/AOS x C. Lulu 'Hot Pink' AM/AOS)
Little Mermaid (C. walkeriana x Bc. Maikai) is influenced by 3 species in its breeding. It gets its shape from B. nodosa, flower count from C. bowringiana and color from C. walkeriana. Lulu (C. Brabantiae x Penny Kuroda) 'Hot Pink' has flowers that will complement the color of Little Mermaid and the spotting. I bet about half of the progeny will come out spotted. Plants will be 10-12” tall, expect 7-10 flowers from sturdy stems. These flowers and plants will have a unique look and be a nice addition to your collection.

Slc. Terry's Spots (Slc. Mem. Evelyn Paquette 'SVO Hot Spots' x Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'Diamond Orchids' HCC/AOS)
The flowers of Mem. Evelyn Paquette (Slc. Armonía de Sueños x C. Mark Jones) have some of the nicest red lips of any yellow-with-red-spots grex. Katherine Clarkson (C. Mark Jones x Slc. Jungle Gem) was the first grex with really nice, large yellow flowers, and red spots on a compact plant that flowers twice a year. Here we are expecting well-rounded flower form, broad, flat red lips, and of course, yellow flowers with red spots. These will be excellent! 3” pots $18

Yellow flowers with red spots, 20 years ago this was impossible. Today SVO is offering the top breeding in this color class. Blc. Sun Spots (C. Mark Jones x Blc. SunCoast Sunspots) has impressive heads of 5-8 large flowers. Slc. Jerry Spencer (C. Green Emerald x Slc. Katherine Clarkson) has waxy hard flowers and a broad lip. This next generation is going to deliver large flowers, in yellow with red spots and broad red lips. They are going to be good!

(Slc. Jungle Hotspot 'SVO' x Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'SVO' HCC/AOS)
This is the next generation on small compact plants with yellow flowers and red spots. The parents of Jungle Hotspot are (Slc. Jungle Gem x C. Penny Kuroda) and Katherine Clarkson are (C. Mark Jones x Jungle Gem). Note that Jungle Gem is a grandparent of each parent, in this hybrid. This doubling up will keep plant size down to less than 8” tall, promising yellow flowers with red posts and red lips.

(Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Lc. Black Jack 'Universal' HCC/AOS)
Katherine Clarkson (C. Mark Jones x Jungle Gem) breeds for flower size, form, yellow color with dark red spotting, on compact plants just 10” tall, and twice a year flowering. C. Black Jack (Thospol Spot x Love Chance) has a small plant habit – about 10” tall – and blooms with 5-7 densely spotted flowers. Paired with Katherine Clarkson we are expecting bold dense spotting, red lips, 5-6 flowers on upright inflorescences from plants barely 10” tall.

(Lc. Plum Lulu 'Hot Lips' AM/AOS x C. Mark Jones 'SVO' HCC/AOS)
The flower color of Plum Lulu (Lc. Lulu x C. Maui Plum) is outstanding. The strong upright inflorescence displays 9-11 flowers measuring 5” across! The flowers of Mark Jones (Caudebec x Fascelis) have wide rounded petals, surprisingly wide for spotted Catt breeding. We have seen how Mark Jones imparts wide petals to its progeny. With this hybrid we are looking forward to the development of burgundy spotted flowers in shades of red, with bright fuchsia lips, broad petals, and strong stems holding 9 or more flowers above the foliage.
