Large / Standard Cattleyas

These larger size Cattleyas will mature at 12” to 24” tall. They possess the similar growth habit of ‘Compact Cattleyas’ just taller. These are bred to have strong stems caring 7 or more flowers and will be very impressive when blooming at mature size. These make excellent display plants for orchid shows and most will bloom during the spring show season.

Lc. Issy  (L. tenebrosa ‘Kathleen’ x C. leopoldii ‘Paul’ AM/AOS )

This is a remake of a classic hybrid first registered in 1901.  These will become tall plants with dramatic heads of 4 to 6 richly colored chestnut brown flowers with brightly contrasting purple lips. These will flower in August and September a time of the year when not many cattleyas are blooming. These will truly be magnificent show plants. Expect flower to be 6” wide or more!

Blc. Izumi Charm ‘Zoom Zoom’ x Lc. Magic Melody ‘SVO’ AM/AOS

This is the next generation of breeding capitalizing on the strong upright stems of each parent.  Each have 4-5 white to light yellow flowers, with dark contrasting magenta purple lips. The breeding of the parents are Izumi Charm (Lc. Melody Fair x Blc. Love Sound and Lc. Magic Melody (Lc. Melody Fair x Lc. Tokyo Magic). These will be compact hybrids but on the larger size. I am looking forward to seeing these flowers.

Chocolate Drop is (C. leopoldii x C. aurantiaca) and the ‘SVO’ cultivar is the most recent AM, with excellent color, shape and form.  Winners’ Circle is (Slc. Circle of Life x Pot. Sally Taylor) and the cultivar ‘Champion’ has strong stems carrying 4 beautiful flowers.  There have been great hybrids coming out of Chocolate Drop. We expect to see some dark waxy reds to magenta reds here, with clusters of 4-6 mid size flowers.

This is a standard crossed with a mid-sized Cattleya.  George King is (Blc. Buttercup x C. Bob Betts) while Izumi Charm is (Lc. Melody Fair x Blc. Love Sound) this cross will produce a large compact growing plant.  The flower color will range from salmon to peach to rose with 4-6 blooms carried on a strong inflorescence.

Honolulu Sunset (Blc. George Angus x Blc. Waikiki Sunset) is a classic art shade orange-red hybrid bred in Hawaii.  Dream Circle (Slc.Circle of Life x Pot. Hisako Akatsuka) has excellent fuchsia flower color and a full rounded form.  Expect full shaped flowers in a range of beautiful art shades.  Very promising hybrid.

Guess What is (Lc. Trick or Treat x Blc. Waikiki Gold) with tall spikes carrying 6-9 starry, bright orange-yellow flowers and Schroder’s Love is (Blc. Love Sound x C. schroderae) with 4-5 large flowers on good stems.  This pairing is to capitalize on the bright orange-yellow flower color while improving flower size and shape.   These will have good stems carrying 4-7 bright orange-yellow to pastel peach colored flowers

Our clone of Guess What (Lc. Trick or Treat x Blc. Waikiki Gold) was recently awarded for its strong spike of bright orange-yellow flowers.  Love Passion (Pot. William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) has an impressive stem of orange flowers.  The doubling up of Lc. Trick or Treat in this breeding will assure strong stems and high flower count.  Dark orange to orange-yellow flowers held in big clusters for February and March. This will make spectacular show plants.

Here is an outstanding hybrid introduced by Stewarts Orchids in the early 1970’s.   We have paired two of their best Trick or Treat’s, ‘Orange Beauty’ a proven breeder and ‘Orange Magic’ with its excellent flower quality. These are tall plants with heads of 15 to 20 orange flowers.  Get a piece of orchid history with this one!  Excellent show plants for February and March.
