L. tenebrosa (f. aurea 'SVO' x f. alba 'Thonhauser's Treasure')

To the best of my knowledge, this is a first: the pairing of an aurea L. tenebrosa with an alba.  Will some be true semi-albas, white flowers with purple lips?  Or will they be aureas?  Or possibly revert back to a more normal color form?  Not sure.  The young plants are not exhibiting much dark pigment on the leaves, and this might be a clue to the flower color.  If some did come out with white flowers and purple lips, how awesome would that be?  No promises here, but as the saying goes, “Nothing ventured nothing gained.” Limited supply

Pot. NEW HYBRID (C. Milton Warne 'Premier' AM/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Island Romance')

After thinking about the breeding of Lc. Straight Answer, I realized that there may be other opportunities to use Milton Warne and possibly make an even better hybrid similar to Straight Answer.  Incorporating Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) in place of Trick or Treat should give larger and fuller flowers while not compromising flower count and color.  I am really looking forward to blooming this cross; I think it will be like a super Straight Answer!

L. tenebrosa 'Claire' HCC/AOS x L. tenebrosa 'Paul' AM/AOS

Both ‘Claire’ and ‘Paul’ are siblings that came from a line of breeding with one parent L. tenebrosa ‘Spectabilis’ AM/AOS, a cultivar with very dark colored flowers.  These both have deeply colored petals and sepals in the darkest red bronze color with a vibrant purple lip.  These will have a high average of quality, with blooms of extra large size, dark bronze color, and with deep purple lips.  These are good vigorous seedlings.

Lc. Tropical Trick (Lc. Tropical Sunset 'Ocean's Heaven'x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

Every spring I enjoy seeing Lc. Trick or Treat and its hybrids bloom, with their large heads of starry, brightly-colored flowers.  Suwada Orchid Nursery in Japan made Lc. Tropical Sunset (C. Horace x Tropic Glow).  This grex has large orange flowers with full, dark red lips, well presented on a strong inflorescence.  Simply put, this is an excellent hybrid!  Trick or Treat will assure high flower count and orange tepal color, and the lips will be red.  These will be super hybrids, with lots of brightly colored flowers for February and March.

Pot. NEW HYBRID [Bc. Little Mermaid 'Janet' AM/AOS x (Lc. Angel Heart x Slc. Fire Fantasy) 'SVO']

Little Mermaid is C. walkeriana x Bc. Maikai, and Bc. Maikai is (B. nodosa x C. bowringiana), so just three species are represented in Little Mermaid.  The flowers are lavender-pink with a broad spotted lip and the charm of the B. nodosa grandparent. Slc. (Lc. Angel Heart x Fire Fantasy) is a very nice pink flower displaying darker pink-lavender flares, with excellent shape and stem.  This is a bit of “novelty” breeding, and we're looking for pink splashing on the petals and large, broad lips.  Plants will be compact growers, and I expect them to bloom twice a year.

Pot. Orange Neon (Pot. Gold Medallions 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima')

Gold Medallions (Slc. Wasp Nest x Blc. Love Sound) has flowers that look like gold medallions, with very round blooms in gold colors.  I've been using Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) in place of Trick or Treat in some hybrids lately, as Love Passion is a lot like a “super” Trick or Treat, with 15+ larger, fuller orange flowers, carried well above the foliage. These are producing colorful, bright, golden-orange-yellow flowers, thus the name of the grex.

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Straight Answer 'No Question' AM/AOSx Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

Straight Answer (Milton Warne x Trick or Treat) is a Stewart Orchids hybrid popularized by the clone ‘No Question,’ which earned accolades for its big heads of yellow flowers flared with red.  The proven breeding qualities of Love Sound - full, rounded flowers, bright yellow color, a sturdy stem carrying 4-6 blooms, and an attractive compact plant habit - make this cross a well-thought-out pairing.  Strong sturdy stems will hold 5-9 bright yellow flowers well above the foliage, and the many blooms will be flared in red, most with red lips.

Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Kagaribi Dawn 'Red Star' x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #2')

Kagaribi Dawn flowers with starry blooms in an intense red color - quite an attention getter!   I like the breeding qualities of Spring Fires (Fires of Spring x Fire Island), with its 5-9 deep red flowers held on strong stems.  The expectation is for dark red flowers produced on sturdy stems, all on a compact plant.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima')

Bright orange flowers are hard to come by - I just love them!  So I had to make this cross.  Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' (Orange Nugget x Bouton D'Or) has amazing orange color - a real shocker!  Love Passion 'Dogashima' (Lc. Trick or Treat x William Farrell) produces 7-9 true orange flowers on a long stem.  These will have good stems with big, well-supported heads of bright orange flowers.  Should be good March bloomers and real show stoppers!

Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS x C. Orchidglade 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' (Orange Nugget x Bouton D'Or) has amazing orange flowers with great form and good heads of blooms.  Orchidglade (walkeriana x aurantiaca) is an interesting parent, as it flowers 2 x a year with flat orange flowers, a yellow lip with a touch of red centrally, and 5-7 well supported blooms.  I am expecting full shaped orange flowers, and I’m hoping for some to have yellow lips.  I don’t recall ever seeing that color combination before, and this could be a real first!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3' x Pot. Star Fire 'Rockin' Red')

This year, as you can see, I have stepped up the use of Spring Fires (Fires of Spring x Fire Island).  I really like the strong stems holding up 7-9 red flowers with darker red lips.  The flowers of Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Pot. Rubescence) are also produced on a strong stem, with 5-7 deep vibrant red blooms.  This grex was made as a continuation to further improve the fullness of the flower form, raise flower count to 5-7 on sturdy stems above the foliage, and intensify the deep red color.  This is a very promising hybrid.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Picotee Flight 'SVO' x Slc. Angel Eyes 'SVO II' AM/AOS)

The flowers of Picotee Flight (Horizon Flight x Love Sound) have a nice color combination.  The yellow flowers have a red picotee around the petal margin, and the plants have sturdy stems holding 5-7 flowers above the foliage.  Angel Eyes (Bright Angel x Lc. Little Dipper) has a full-shaped rounded flower with lots of color: yellow, orange, and a deep red splash on the petals and lip.  Great flares are assured with variable patterning of flower color; all will be in shades of yellow, orange and red.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Love Passion 'Island Romance'x Lc. Aussie Sunset 'Cosmic Fire')

The plant and flowers of Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) are a lot like a ‘Super’ Lc. Trick or Treat but with larger and fuller orange flowers carried 15 or more on a stem that extends above the foliage.  Aussie Sunset (Fires of Spring x C. Gene May) has 5 to 9 orange flowers with flared petals and a yellow central spot, red tips and a full shaped red lip - very colorful!  Both parents have strong inflorescences.  I am expecting great presentation of many well-sized orange flowers, flared in a variety of colors, including yellow, orange and red.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #2' x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Orange Tart')

This year I decided to ramp up the use of Spring Fires (Fires of Spring x Fire Island).  I really like the strong stems with 7-9 red flowers and darker red lips.  The Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound) has superior shape, and I consider it the cultivar with the best formed flower in this grex.  The orange petals have a red blush and bold red flares, and the flowers are produced 4-6 per stem.  This breeding is designed to fill out the flower shape, produce 5-7 bright red to orange flowers on each strong upright inflorescence, and keep plant size under 12” tall.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3'x Pot. Al Thanhauser 'My Beauty')

Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong stems with 7-9 red flowers and darker red lips held high above the foliage. Al Thanhauser (C. Orchidglade x Pot. Rubescence) has fantastic sparkling red flowers with dark burgundy lips, produced 4 to 5 on strong stems.  This grex is working toward further intensification of deep red flower color, fullness of the segments and form, and flower count of 5-7 on sturdy stems.  This is a very promising hybrid!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Blc. Kaboom 'SVO')

The parents of Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) are well known and have many successful hybrids to their credit.  The cultivar ‘James’ has well-formed, flat, solid yellow flowers with just a hint of red on the lip, and the plant blooms 2 to 3 times a year.  The newly registered Kaboom (Guess What x Schroder's Love) has 5-7 sparkling bright yellow flowers with an orange throat on great stems; the great color and presentation inspired the name "Kaboom!"  This cross promises to deliver 5-7 bright yellow flowers with golden orange throats of excellent form on good stems.  This cross is not to be missed!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3' x Pot. Firehouse 'SVO')

Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong stems holding 7-9 red flowers with darker red lips.  Firehouse (Blc. Love Sound x Rubescence) has 3-4 rounded flowers in a red-purple color held well on sturdy stems.  These will be compact growing plants with an upright growth habit.  The flowers will be red and supported nicely above the foliage.  Springtime red flowers are a favorite, and this cross should provide those very well.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Picotee Flight 'SVO Picotee' x Slc. Angel's Fantasy 'Solar Flare' FCC/AOS)

The flowers of Picotee Flight (Horizon Flight x Love Sound) have a lovely color combination - the yellow flowers have a red picotee around the petal margin - and the plants have sturdy stems holding 5-7 flowers above the foliage.  The FCC/AOS for Angel's Fantasy 'Solar Flare' (Fire Fantasy x Bright Angel) says it all - it’s the top of its class!  Just take a look at the picture.   These should be particularly showy, with brilliant yellow flowers and bright red flares.  As a bonus, they should flower twice a year!

Blc. Kaboom (Blc. Schroder's Love 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Guess What 'SVO'AM/AOS)

Schroder’s Love (C. schroderae x Love Sound) lends its great flower form, size and strong stem to this grex.  Guess What (Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) adds its high flower count of 9-1l bright orange blooms on a strong stem.  The great color and presentation of the flowers inspired the name "Kaboom!"  These are really nice and not to be overlooked!  The reciprocal cross is also available. Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO' AM/AOSx Blc. Goldenzelle 'Lemon Chiffon' AM/AOS)

The first time I saw Izumi Charm (Love Sound x Lc. Melody Fair) flower I was impressed by the robust plants and strong inflorescences, carrying 4-5 light yellow 4.75” flowers with dark crimson red lips.  Goldenzelle (Fortune x C. Horace) has an impressive heritage and set the standard for high quality yellow flowers with over 25 AOS awards.  This grex will result in large-growing plants with big 6” yellow flowers and dark red lips.  They will also have sturdy stems, giving a great display of 4-5 blooms held well above the foliage.

I have been breeding with Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. The intense purple-red color and bright yellow throat of Hawaiian Prominence (Hisako Akatsuka x Slc. Circle of Life) has deep red flowers with excellent form and size, some measuring up to 5” across!  Great flower colors in magenta-red are expected, and the blooms should have good shape and measure 4” across on compact plants standing about 10” tall.
