Sunset Valley Orchids 2017 Catasetinae Plant Offering

For 2017, I am pleased to share the most comprehensive selection of Catasetinae hybrids and species ever offered.  Through the ongoing process of collecting, selecting, and developing our parental lines, the quality of the breeding stock is now without compare.  These new hybrids will set the standard for flower quality, plant vigor, and your enjoyment.

This year's main focus has been on Fredclarkeara breeding.  This wonderful hybrid genus produces fantastic results, with beautiful color, superior shape, high flower count, perfectly arranged blooms, and highly fragrant long-lasting flowers.  Quality in this genus is just amazing!  To date, Fredclarkeara cultivars have received 18 FCC/AOS awards from the American Orchid Society!  Remarkable statistics aside, these really are great plants: robust growers, reliable bloomers, and long-lived flowers.  This is the year to acquire the best Fredclarkeara genetics ever offered; don't miss out!

Over the last few years we have been working on the development of advanced breeding lines for Cycnoches.  I just love the elegant swan-shaped blooms; they truly are the most breathtaking flowers in the genus.  We have been selecting Cycnoches for our breeding program using several criteria: plant vigor, flower quality, flower color, and resistance to back bulb die-off.  Our Cycnoches species and hybrids have been through this selection process for two to three generations, and the resulting improvements in flower quality and ease of culture are evident.
By popular demand, we have produced a few more standard-sized Catasetum crosses.  The large flowers are really amazing!  These new crosses have superior genetics and are producing some really superb flowers.

We also are continuing the successful “mini-Catasetum” and “mini-Clowesetum” crosses, including the introduction of several very promising new ones.  This is a new plant form that has gained considerable attention from collectors.  Besides being compact growers, these plants consistently flower 2-4 times a year!

In this list you also will see advanced hybrids using Mormodes.  We have been working with these for a number of years, developing new colors and improving plant vigor.  Mormodes are some of my favorite late-blooming Catasetinae.  They have fantastic, twisted flowers that are really different, with bizarre bold colors and spicy fragrances that signal the end of the Catasetinae blooming season.

I've also received many requests for Catasetinae species.  When breeding species, it's important to use the best possible parental stock to accentuate good qualities, especially plant vigor.  This list reflects the “best of type” in the species offered.  There are some fantastic things here, so please take your time in making decisions - or just get them all.

The new Catasetinae list will be released in two parts, this being the first.  The second will follow in approximately 5-6 weeks.
Good growing,
Fred Clarke

Fdk. After Dark (Mo. Painted Desert 'SVO'HCC/AOS x Ctsm. Donna Wise Susan' AM/AOS)

This is the hybrid that started it all and is now world famous, with 44 AOS quality and cultural awards, including 9 FCC/AOS!  The plants offered here came from the original mother flask found in the back of the lab - miracles do happen!  This is the last chance to own an unbloomed seedling from this groundbreaking grex. Here are some pictures of After Dark: Pic 1 , 2 , 3 , 4

Cyc. warscewiczii (Cyc. warscewiczii 'Giant Swan' x Cyc. warscewiczii Wide Petals')

This 2017 listing contains four new Cyc. warscewiczii offerings.  I believe that these crosses have the highest potential ever seen and will set a new standard in flower quality for this extremely desirable species.  Cyc. warscewiczii is the most spectacular in the genus, and these new combinations are not to be missed!  'Wide Petals' is superior to all others in flower size, count, shape and flowering habit.  Check out the picture: I truly believe there is no better warscewiczii out there.  'Giant Swan' is one of my best cultivars, with very large flowers, can produce 3-4 inflorescences per pseudobulb simultaneously.

Fdk. New Hybrid (Mo. Leopard Drops 'SVO' AM/AOS x Ctsm. expansum 'Linda' AM/AOS)

A new Fredclarkeara hybrid!  Based on the success of similar crosses, these will have long-lasting flowers, full shape, heavy substance, fragrance and all the other great qualities this kind of breeding exhibits.  Flowers will be in colors from ranging from green to orange to red, most with dark burgundy spots.  Expect 2-3 pendulous inflorescences with 20 or more flowers each.

Cyc. Pineapple Popcorn (Cyc. warscewiczii 'Wide Petals' x Cyc. Kevin Clarke 'SVO' FCC/AOS)

Here we are aiming for improved flower shape in an advanced Cycnoches hybrid.  Cyc. Warscewiczii 'Wide Petals' is superior in flower size, count, shape and flowering habit.  I don't believe there are many better warscewiczii out there.  Kevin Clarke (Cyc. herrenhusanum x Cyc. warscewiczii) is truly special.  It is named for my younger son and is the first Cycnoches hybrid from SVO to receive a coveted First Class Certificate (FCC) from the American Orchid Society.  The swan-shaped flowers of Kevin Clarke are bright yellow with faint gold spots -- an amazing color!  When it was awarded, this plant had two inflorescences carrying 28 perfectly-arranged blooms.  Cyc. Kevin Clarke already has improved lip size and form, and the addition of warscewiczii genes from 'Wide Petals' will result in a significant contribution to the overall size, shape, form and lip qualities of this grex.  It is hard to improve on an FCC, but this cross has the potential to do just that!  Check these first to bloom Pic 1 , 2

Ctsm. tenebrosum (Ctsm.  tenebrosum 'Ed Wise #2' AM/AOS x Ctsm. tenebrosum 'Ed Wise')

This cross combines two of the best Ctsm. tenebrosum I've seen.  This is the showiest of the early-blooming species, and a great way to start the Catasetinae blooming season!  Both parents bloom reliably, with great form and color.  Ctsm. tenebrosum 'Ed #2' is the parent of Ctsm. Donna Wise, which is the parent of Fdk. After Dark.  I've often thought that the influence of 'Ed #2'is what made Fdk. After Dark so terrific.  This is superior breeding of a very desirable species, and a must-have for all Catasetum growers.

Ctsm. denticulatum (Ctsm. denticulatum 'SVO II' AM/AOS x Ctsm. denticulatum  'SVO' AM/AOS)

This is a pairing between the two best cultivars of this delightful compact-growing species.  I've been trying to produce these again for several years, and it's taken longer than I expected.  As you know, it takes male and female flowers to make a capsule, and I finally got female flowers.  Both parents are excellent growers and flower 3-4 times a year as mature plants.  Ctsm. denticulatum likes to stay warm in winter, with minimum temperatures of 60-65 oF and humidity at 50% or higher.  Better get these now - who knows when one will flower female again?!

SVO 5981
Ctsm. Dark Odyssey (Ctsm. Karen Armstrong 'Dark Darling' x Ctsm. Darkness 'SVO Magnificent Burgundy')

This is a new mini-Catasetum crossed with a standard.  Both parents have deep, dark burgundy flowers.  'SVO Magnificent Beauty' has a large flower with amazing color that will complement the qualities of 'Dark Darling.'  I expect great things from this cross: big, dark burgundy flowers, full shape and 2-3 bloomings a year.  A very promising hybrid!  I saw one flower in the propagation cell tray with an amazing dark burgundy color and large flat lip.  Don't miss out on this grex!  Here are pictures of the first to flower.  Pic 1 , 2 ,3 ,4 , 5

Ctsm. pileatum v. imperiale (Ctsm. pileatum v. imperiale 'Pierre Couret' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. pileatum v. imperiale 'SVO Blood Red')

Superior dark red Ctsm. pileatum are very hard to come by.  These will bloom in a range of colors from solid red to two-tone red/white and possibly red/green.  If you've been looking for Ctsm. pileatum with terrific potential, here they are!

Ctsm. Brent's Black Hawk (Ctsm. Donna Wise 'Lee' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. tenebrosum 'Ed Wise #2' AM/AOS)

These will produce lots of dark chocolate/maroon flowers with bright green lips on long arching stems.  Some flowers may be almost black and will be very striking, with their contrasting green lips.  This is a very vigorous hybrid that will flower in early spring, summer and fall.

Cyc. New Hybrid (Cyc. Richard Brandon 'SVO II' x Cyc. Martha Clarke 'SVO' AM/AOS)

One of my favorite modern Cycnoches crosses is Richard Brandon (warscewiczii x Jean E. Monnier) they have had excellent flower quality, easy of growth, fast to flower and above all excellent bloom color, but my most favorite is my wife's namesake, Martha Clarke (herrenhusanum x barthiorum) she is just beautiful with oranghe-yellow flowers and red spots. I have a good feeling about his cross, and I expect new flower colors: some will have an almost orangey base color, and almost all will be boldly spotted burgundy.  These will have excellent flower size and a beautiful cascading arrangement of 15 or more blooms.

Fdk. Gemstones (Mo. Painted Desert 'SVO' AM AOS x Ctsm. Orchidglade 'JTM'

Painted Desert 'SVO' is well proven as a parent and imparts many fine qualities to its progeny, which have received more than 47 awards worldwide!!!  'JTM' is short for 'Jamie's Tortured Midnight.'  This remarkable clone has exceptionally large and very dark burgundy flowers.  This grex will produce offspring that range in color from dark red to almost black, with broad, flattened lips.  Inflorescences will be produced 1-3 per pseudobulb and carry 15-25 well arranged flowers.  This is a really great Fredclarkeara, with exceptional flower color, size and longevity.

Fdk. New Hybrid (Mo. Painted Desert 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Ctsm. spitzii 'SVO Gold' FCC/AOS)

Painted Desert (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Morm. sinuata) is well proven as a parent, tramsmitting many fine traits to its progeny.  Ctsm. spitzii 'SVO Gold' has solid bright yellow flowers of the highest quality, with strong inflorescences carrying 25-30 blooms apiece.  The lip of spitzii is thick and solid, almost like it's formed from yellow wax, and should help to flatten the lip in this grex.  The expectation is for long-lasting, mostly red flowers with contrasting flat lips.  Flower shape should be beautiful, and flower count will be high, as both parents can carry 25 or more blossoms.  This is a highly anticipated cross with lots of potential to produce some exceptional Fredclarkeara offspring.

Cyc. loddigesii (Cyc. loddigesii 'Darkness' x self)

There have been many requests for this species, and the reply has always been ‘sorry - I don’t have any.’   One of the challenges in breeding plants with sexually dimorphic flowers is having both male and female flowers simultaneously. Finally, after years of waiting, we were able to make a selfing.  This dark color from is rare in cultivation and very collectable.  None available

This warscewiczii has superb flower size, count, shape and flowering habit.  The Martha Clarke (herrenhusanum x barthiorum) is truly special, which is why I named it for my wife!  The swan-shaped flowers of Martha Clarke are orange/yellow with dark burgundy spots - amazing colors!  The addition of warscewiczii genes will result in a significant improvement to the overall size, shape, and form.  Large yellow/green flowers with many having red spots - oh my!  Pictures of first to bloom . Ctsm. Double Down (Ctsm. Chuck Taylor 'Wow' x Ctsm. kleberianum 'SVO' )

Ctsm. Chuck Taylor is an excellent mini-Catasetum, with rich burgundy petals and sepals, and a contrasting yellow lip.  It's just beautiful!  Ctsm. kleberianum is a great mini-Catasetum species, producing strikingly-colored flowers that combine dark barring on the petals and sepals with a bright yellow lip.s  As a bonus, it also carries 15 or more flowers per stem.  These will be mini-Catasetums with bright yellow lips, and the petals and sepals will have dark bars, some of which will be solid burgundy!   This is one of those 'not to be missed' mini-Catasetums.  Check out these first-to-bloom pictures. Fdk. L'Amour de vie de Sue (Mo. Painted Desert 'SVO' HCC/AOS  x Ctsm. Louise Clarke 'Simply Fantastic')

Painted Desert (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Morm. sinuata) is the parent of the world-famous Fdk. After Dark.  The influence of Mormodia (Mo.) is well known: it adds flower color, multiple pendulous inflorescences and flower longevity to its offspring.  Ctsm. Louise Clarke is named for my mother and is a spectacular hybrid.  The cultivar 'Simply Fantastic' flowers 3-4 times a year and has superb flower quality, high flower count and huge, hard flat lips.  The Ctsm. Louise Clarke adds additional doses of pileatum and expansum, which will provide improved flower size and lip width.  What about color?  I believe that the deep red from Mo. Painted Desert combined with the dark brown of Ctsm. Louise Clarke will lead to red blooms with darker spots, but this cross has the potential to produce black-colored flowers.  All will have excellent form, arrangement and flower count.    Similar to SVO 6481.  Picture of first to bloom. Ctsm. Fong Cing (Ctsm. Orchidglade 'Jack of Diamonds' AM/AOS x Ctsm. José Abalo 'SVO')

This Orchidglade (pileatum x expansum) has dark red flowers and an exceptionally large lip.  The José Abalo (sanguineum x Orchidglade) has a 2 foot long inflorescence carrying 20 dark burgundy flowers with black lips.  This grex was very successful when made with the heavily spotted Ctsm. Orchidglade 'Davie Ranches' AM/AOS, and many plants flowered with strong stems of heavy blooms, deeply spotted with burgundy.  Here are some pictures from that first group.  Pic 1 , 2 .  This remake using 'Jack of Diamonds' is designed to reinforce the dark burgundy flower.  I am expecting most to be surprisingly large, dark burgundy flowers on strong stems.  These will be fantastic!

Ctsm. pileatum (Ctsm. pileatum 'Dinner Plate' x Ctsm. pileatum 'Jumbo Green Gold' HCC/AOS)

Ctsm.  pileatum is the 'king and queen' of the Catasetums.  These will bloom 2 or 3 times a year with large 4-5” flowers, impressive broad green lips, and 10-13 flowers per inflorescence.  Several flowered last year and were stunning.  All I can say is, "Wow!"

Ctsm. tigrinum (Ctsm. tigrinum 'SVO II' x self)

This is a great species: a small-growing plant producing white flowers with pink spots.  Mature plants carry 15-25 flowers per inflorescence and can flower 2 to 3 times a season.  This species is very rare in the USA and in its homeland of Brazil.  Ctsm. tigrinum likes to stay warm in winter, with minimum temperatures of 60-65 oF and humidity at 50% or higher. This is the first significant offering of this species that I've seen.  If you collect species, this is a must-have!

Ctsm. New Hybrid (Ctsm. Chuck Taylor 'Wow' x Ctsm. denticulatum 'SVO II' AM/AOS)

Chuck Taylor (Portagee Star x denticulatum) is a very nice mini-Catasetum.  The cultivar 'Wow' has dark burgundy petals and sepals, and a contrasting yellow lip - just beautiful!  Ctsm. denticulatum is a small-growing species with excellent breeding qualities.  Here, Chuck Taylor is backcrossed to its denticulatum parent, assuring a mini-Castasetum plant stature and lots of spotted flowers in a range of colors. Plants will flower 2-3 times a year.

(Fdk. Frank Smith 'SVO' FCC/AOS x Ctsm. John C. Burchett 'Ursa Major' FCC/AOS)

Frank Smith 'SVO' (Mo. Painted Desert x Ctsm. John C. Burchett) is just fantastic, with superior shape, high flower count, perfectly arranged blooms, long lasting flowers, and a flower color that is very dark, appearing nearly black.  John C. Burchett (João Stivalli x Susan Fuchs) is the pinnacle of pileatum-based Catasetum breeding today.  Its dark burgundy flowers are fantastic in every way: size, color, shape, etc.  This cross represents line breeding at its finest!  The Frank Smith is already fantastic, but adding back the huge pileatum-based lip of John C. Burchett will further flatten and increase the size of the flower and lip, while maintaining the amazing color.  I'm not sure how it can get any better than this!

Cyc. New Hybrid (Cyc. Jumbo Cooper 'SVO' AM/AOS x Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO' AM/AOS)

This cross is all about green flowers on long cascading inflorescences. The cross of Jumbo Cooper used the very green Cyc. cooperi 'Green Emerald' HCC/AOS and the exceptional  Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO' AM/AOS as parents.  The offspring were high quality, with 3 receiving AOS awards.  Backcrossing Jumbo Cooper to warscewiczii will increase flower size, improve overall shape and reinforce the green flower color. The plants are showing excellent vigor.

The cross of Jumbo Cooper used the very green Cyc. cooperi 'Green Emerald' HCC/AOS and the exceptional  Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO' AM/AOS as parents.  The flower quality, size and count of the progeny have been excellent.  Cyc. Alexis Jesus Pardo (Cyc. Chloroge x Cyc. barthiorum) has a different look to the flowers, with a more upswept petal stance, influenced by the Cyc. loddigesii in its breeding.  These new Cycnoches hybrids are getting very interesting!  The expectation here is for large, light tan to green flowers with spotting, and lots of flowers on each inflorescence.

After Midnight'SVO' are paired with the huge lip and colorful spotted flower of Ctsm. Orchidglade.  Past experience has taught us this type of hybrid makes for improved flower form while allowing for new color combinations.  The flower color of the progeny will range from red and densely spotted to light yellow with bold red spots, and a few will be the darkest burgundy.  There is lots of potential to get unique flowers from this cross.

Clo. New Hybrid (Clo. Pierre Couret 'Flamingo Spots' x Ctsm. Orchidglade 'Davie Ranches' AM/AOS)

One of the great things about Clowesetum (Catasetum x Clowesia) is the 4-5 week flower longevity in this hybrid genus.  The long-lived, light pink flowers with dark pink spotting of the Pierre Couret (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Ctsm. pileatum v. imperiale) are really attractive. Orchidglade (pileatum x expansum) has yellow flowers with red spots and a huge lip.  This hybrid will deliver a significantly improvement in flower size, great color and many flowers per inflorescence.  Flowers will range across pink shades, with darker red-pink spotting.  This advanced Clowesetum cross will raise the bar for flower quality and produce long-lived blooms lasting 4-5 weeks.

This is a new direction in Fredclarkeara breeding!  Because of the Karen Armstrong influence, these plants will stay under 8” tall, making this a mini-Fredclarkeara!!!  Can you tell how excited I am??  We know that Painted Desert is influential in breeding, producing excellent form, color and flower longevity.  It is also a small-growing plant that matures at only 6” tall.  Here we've paired it with the mini-Catasetum Karen Armstrong (Susan Fuchs x denticulatum), with its bright yellow flowers covered in coalescing burgundy spots.  The combination will make this grex a real star!  Flower colors will range from deep red to spotted red/burgundy, and we expect excellent form, high flower count, and pleasing arrangement.  The plants will stay small and produce 2-3 inflorescences per bulb.  I am very anxious to see these bloom!

This 2017 listing contains four new Cyc. warscewiczii offerings.  I believe that these crosses have the highest potential ever seen and will set a new standard in flower quality for this extremely desirable species.  Both of these cultivars came from my earlier cross of ('SVO' AM/AOS x 'SVO II' AM/AOS).  'Giant Swan' is one of my best, with very large flowers, and has produced 3-4 inflorescences per pseudobulb at one time. 'SVO Swan' has the widest petals and fullest flowers I have seen and can carry 5-7 flowers per inflorescence.  I cannot imagine a better pairing and believe this cross will set a new standard of quality.  These are for the discriminating collector, who wants the very best potential in this amazing species.

Donna Wise) 'SVO Crazy Good' has a fantastic flower with amazing form, size, color and a very broad almost-flat lip.  Orchidglade (pileatum x expansum) has large yellow flowers with red spotting and a huge lip.  It is also a prolific bloomer, with flowers produced 3-4 times a season.  With this cross we expect some color influence from the Orchidglade.  Flowers will come in a range of hues, from dark red to light red-yellow, and a few might even be yellow-green.  Most will have varying degrees of red spotting.  Flower size and arrangement will be excellent!

Fdk. New Hybrid (Fdk. Dark There After 'SVO Crazy Good' AM/AOS' x Ctsm. José Abalo 'SVO')

Dark There After (Fdk. After Dark x Ctsm. Donna Wise) has produced a number of significant plants, with five receiving AOS awards to date.  'SVO Crazy Good' is fantastic, with outstanding form, size, color and an amazing, very broad, almost-flat lip.  The addition of José Abalo (sanguineum x Orchidglade), with its 2 foot long stem carrying 20 dark burgundy flowers with black lips, will give us an excellent opportunity for very dark flowers, some showing the elusive black color.  All the benefits of Fredclarkeara breeding will be evident with this cross.  If I were a betting man, this is one I would place my money on.  In fact, I was so excited about the potential for this cross, that I made it twice.  Not to be overlooked!  See SVO 6521.

Fdk. New Hybrid (Fdk. After Hours 'SVO Way Good' AM/AOS x Ctsm. John C. Burchett 'Ursa Major' FCC/AOS)

The grex After Hours (Fdk. After Dark 'SVO' FCC/AOS x Ctsm. John C. Burchett 'Ursa Major' FCC/AOS) has two FCC/AOS parents, and the backcross to John C. Burchett 'Ursa Major' FCC/AOS makes it three.  This type of line breeding, in which a hybrid is crossed back to one of its parents, will continue to increase flower size and improve lip flatness while maintaining the dark, nearly black-burgundy color.  These will have the excellent qualities of Fredclarkeara hybrids, including flower quantity, form, arrangement, size, fragrance and bloom longevity.  Very limited supply.

Cycd. Spotted Hornet (Morm. Exotic Treat 'SVO' AM/AOS x Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO Swan')

Cycnodes (Cycd.) hybrids come from the combination of Cycnoches and Mormodes.  This type of primary hybrid gets the best qualities from both parents: the Mormodes is dominant for color, and the Cycnoches is dominant for shape.  Cycnodes hybrids have a proven track record, producing excellent quality flowers that garner lots of  AOS awards.  Spotted Hornet already has received an AM/AOS and a FCC/AOS!  Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO Swan' has the highest flower quality, and the Exotic Treat (sinuata x tuxtlensis) has amazing color.  These are going to have bright yellow flowers with bold burgundy spotting, and the blooms will have excellent shape and size.  This grex has very high award potential!  Last year, I also offered the reciprocal cross, SVO 6489, allowing the rare opportunity to compare the influence of pod vs. pollen parent on the progeny.  Here are pictures of the awarded plants Pic 1 ,2

Cyc. warscewiczii (Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO Swan' x Cyc. warscewiczii 'OMG' )

'SVO Swan' has the widest petals and fullest flowers I have seen.  'OMG' has unusually large, wide and flat petals.  This will set a new standard in quality for warscewiczii.  This is one for the discriminating collector and will set a new standard of quality.

This Exotic Treat (sinuata x tuxtlensis) has amazing color, with bright orange-yellow flowers and bold burgundy spotting. The large flowers of Nitty-Gritty (Exotic Treat x rolfeana) are an extra dark burnt orange covered with burgundy spots, and a dark red lip.  This is a highly advanced Mormodes hybrid, which displays good growth vigor.  The flowering of Mormodes signals that winter is nearly here, with amazing colors, twisted flowers and a spicy fragrance that typify these last Catasetinae flowers of the season. These are floriferous when mature, with 3-4 inflorescences per bulb.  Expect some amazing and unusual flower colors from this one!

Cyc. New Hybrid (Cyc. Anne-Kathrin Berger 'SVO' x Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO' AM/AOS)

I've been breeding for Cycnoches with yellow flowers and red spots, a combination that I really like.  The Anne-Kathrin Berger (pentadactylon x herrenhusanum) has this color combination as well as great flower form, high flower count and ease of plant growth.  This warscewiczii has great flower quality and is a reliable, vigorous plant that has been an important part of my breeding program. The hope is for a percentage of yellow flowers with fine red spots.  Flower shape will be excellent, and the pendent inflorescences will have 13-15 well-arranged flowers.  I am very optimistic about the results here.

These next generation Cycnodes hybrids have been challenging to make.  It often takes 3-4 attempts before viable seed is produced, and such is the case with this cross.  Freckled Sweetheart was acquired from JEM Orchids and has been a part of my collection for many years.  Its parents are (Morm. tuxtlensis x Cyc. chlorochilon), and the flowers are a brilliant yellow with bold burgundy spots, influenced by the color of the Mormodes parent.  A few things are going to happen when Freckled Sweetheart is crossed to warscewiczii: improved flower size and shape, and most importantly the excellent color will come through.  This is the first offspring from seed produced by Freckled Sweetheart, and I am really looking forward to seeing these!

This cross is named for a large Facebook orchid club in Puerto Rico.  The capsule parent is the best After Midnight (Fdk. After Dark x Ctsm. Burchett (João Stivalli x Susan Fuchs) is as good as it gets with Catasetum breeding today.  The dark burgundy flowers are of superior size, color and shape, and the lip is huge and flat.  This grex is top-of-the-line Fredclarkeara breeding, and the addition of the huge dark pileatum-type lip from the John C. Burchett will further increase flower size and flatten the flower and lip shape.  How can it get better than this?  If I were a betting man, this is another cross where I'd put my money!  Same as SVO 6871 Check out this picture it's a huge 3" flowers with excellent color and form from the first plant to bloom this season

Ctmds. Dragons Glade (Ctmds. Dragons Tail 'Dark Tale' x Ctsm. Orchidglade 'Davie Ranches' AM/AOS)

EVERYBODY MUST CHECK OUT THIS PICTURE!!!  Ctmds. Dragon Glade 'Black Dragon'  this is the 6th plant to flower from this cross (that I know of) and yes it is the blackest orchid I have seen.  It is the most significant improvement in Catasetinae breeding since the first Fredclarkeara's came out. The first 3 looked like the pictures below and now 3 have bloomed like the pictured 'Black Dragon'. It appears the offspring are split 50/50 with about half coming yellow-spotted and the other black or nearly so.  I predicted the yellow-spots but the black colors are a welcomed surprise! The flower form and arrangement of the 6 bloomed plants has also been exceptional. Here is an opportunity to be one of the first to acquire the truly amazing genetics of this landmark hybrid.

This is a Catamodes (Catasetum x Mormodes).  Dragons Tail (Ctsm. denticulatum x Morm. ignea) has amazing-looking flowers, almost scale-like, with deep colors and flat lips.  Just take a look at the picture.  Orchidglade (pileatum x expansum) has large yellow flowers with red spotting and a huge lip.  It grows particularly well and is a reliable bloomer.  This is the first [(Mormodes x Catasetum) x Catasetum] cross I am aware of, making this a first in breeding.  The Mormodes, with its special ability to add color to hybrids, will assure that this is an extraordinary grex.  Flowers will have a yellow base color overlaid with dense coalescing dark burgundy-brown spots, and the lips will be flat and similar in coloration.  Flowers will have good substance and last 3 weeks or more.  This is a very exciting hybrid with very interesting floral characteristics.  Check out this first to bloom picture - Wow!!!  The description written a year ago is spot on, with one exception: the flower is twice the size of Dragons Tail!  We have now flowered these additional plants: Picture  1 2.

Cycd. Troublemaker
(Cycd. Spotted Hornet 'SVO' FCC/AOS x Cyc. warscewiczii 'SVO' AM/AOS)
An FCC/AOS is the highest accolade that AOS judges can confer.  Spotted Hornet (Morm. Exotic Treat x Cyc. warscewiczii) 'SVO' has superior color, with the sepals and petals a bright yellow-green with mahogany spots, and an orange lip, spotted with mahogany.  This grex exhibits the best qualities that result when a Mormodes and a Cycnoches are combined: the Mormodes is dominant for color, and the Cycnoches is dominant for shape.  By breeding back to Cyc. warscewiczii, I predict improvement in flower form, with wider and flatter blooms.  I am also expecting the vibrant flower color to prevail, due to dominance by the Mormodes.  These have lots of potential for the 'best yet' in Cycnodes breeding. Check out the one of the first to bloom.... Pic 1, Super shape and color!

Dark Matter are (Fdk.After Dark 'Black Pearl' x Ctsm. Orchidglade 'JTM'), and the 'SVO' cultivar is, in my perhaps-not-so-humble opinion, one of the nicest flowers to come from modern Fredclarkeara breeding.  Very dark flowers, excellent shape, size, arrangement, fragrance…I could go on and on!

Mormodes are getting more attention these days, as the advanced hybrids are proving to be easier to grow and flower than the species.  Morm. Midnight Hooker (Midnight x  hookeri) has large, dark red flowers with bright red lips, and Morm. Mark Mills (Jumbo Bacia x Virgen del Valle) has even darker red flowers with unusually vibrant red lips.  There are 5 Mormodes species represented in this grex: badia, unica, buccinator, sinuata (twice) and hookeri (twice), making this hybrid's genetic composition very diverse.  The flowers of the progeny will predictably be red in color with darker red lips, and the upright stems will carry 10-15 blooms in December. The flowers of the progeny will be spotted with flowers in reds, orange or even yellow on upright stems will carry 10-15 blooms in December.    Check out these first bloom plants, this was a fantastic suprise!!!  Pic1,   Pic2,  Pic3   These are vigorous and easy to grow.

Barnabas Collins is a new Mormodia (Clowesia x Mormodes) hybrid registered in 2014, and already it has received several AOS awards.  When it was awarded, 'SVO Dark Night' carried 117 flowers and buds on 7 inflorescences - nearly 17 flowers per stem.  Even more amazingly, all of these flowers originated from one pseudobulb!!!  If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it!  The flower is a deep wine color with darker burgundy spotting – truly gorgeous!  The other parent of this grex is Ctsm. Orchidglade, which I use heavily in breeding.  There are good reason for this: excellent growth habit, lots of large flowers produced 2-3 times a year, excellent color, and the tendency to imparts these qualities to its offspring.  The cultivar 'JTM' is short for 'Jamie's Tortured Midnight' and has a particularly solid dark burgundy flower.  This is a new Fredclarkeara hybrid using an exceptional Mormodia and a proven breeder in 'JTM.'  I can only dream of the possibilities until these start to bloom!  If I were a betting man, I would definitely put some money on this one.

Mini-Catasetums have been a successful new direction in breeding, and this year we're trying some mini-Clowesetums.  The hybrid genus Clowesetum (Catasetum x Clowesia) is known for bloom longevity, with flowers lasting up to 4-5 weeks! Cl. Rebecca Northen (Grace Dunn x rosea) is a great parent and has been used in many successful hybrids.  Ctsm. kleberianum is a very rare Catasetum, and some suspect that it may be extinct in the wild.  It is a small-growing species with attractive flowers, sporting a flat bright yellow lip.  The plant size from this cross will be very compact, making these mini-Clowesetums - very cool!  This is a new direction in breeding, and predictions are a bit challenging.  The possibility is good for full-shaped flowers with spotting on the petals and sepals, and lips with pink to yellow color, but I would not be surprised to see light pink flowers with lots of darker pink spots.  As a bonus, these will flower 2 or 3 times a season.  I'm excited about the potential for this cross, and I'll be keeping a watchful eye on these as they begin to bloom.
